2 THE 71 ST ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP Over 600 guests attended the Academy s 71st Scholarship Tribute Dinner. An atmosphere of unity and support filled the hall as attendees saluted the honorees and were entertained with an acappella choir directed by Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Mann and Rabbi Moshe Dovid Choueka. Mr. and Mrs. Yoni Klein, distinguished parents and community activists, were honored for their leadership role in so many Academy projects. Rabbi Benzion Klatzko was the recipient of the Alumnus Award for his wide-ranging activities as a popular ambassador of Judaism, inspiring unaffiliated young adults to explore their heritage. It is a longstanding Academy tradition to recognize staff that have served for twenty-five years in the school. This year, the Academy honored three outstanding staff members. Rabbi Eli Dessler, Financial Director, leads the Financial Office with clarity, efficiency, and professionalism. Mrs. Yitty Feuer is a beloved, enthusiastic Early Childhood teacher whose mother was the unforgettable Mrs. Beverly Koval. Mrs. Chavi Matitia is the Girls Elementary s talented art teacher whose students continually produce original and beautiful art projects. Mrs. Matitia s mother, Mrs. Carol Schottenstein, is Preschool Director, and her mother-in-law is longtime school secretary, Mrs. Edith Matitia. Mrs. Libby Feifer, Mrs. Sherrie Kantarovich, Mrs. Debbie Reinhardt, and Mrs. Gretchen Shapiro were also recognized for fifteen years of dedicated teaching. The evening was a huge success thanks to Scholarship Campaign Chairs, Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Reuven Dessler, Mr. and Mrs. Amir Jaffa, and Mr. and Mrs. Mendy Klein. Dinner hosts were Mr. and Mrs. David Farkas and Mr. and Mrs. Adam Pollack. 2

Rabbi Dovid Nojowitz, National Director, Torah Umesorah As one of the nation s premier day schools, your institution has reflected well on Ohio. I m impressed by the many national awards the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland has received as an outstanding day school, and I m glad that the Ohio Department of Education has been able to recognize your school with its own Asset Builder Award and Stellar Award. The department also has recognized Hebrew Academy of Cleveland as a high-quality school through its Step Up to Quality program. Dr. Richard A. Ross, Superintendent, Public Instruction Ohio Department of Education Hebrew Academy graduates include innovators in the fields of clergy, education, medicine, law, and the arts around the globe. For seventy-one years, the Academy has been at the forefront of day school curriculum, sending men and women to positively impact the community and world with their passion and drive. Dr. Nylajean R. McDaniel, Superintendent, Cleveland Heights/University Heights School District The Hebrew Academy continues to be a center for excellent education for the Cleveland community. You enable the Hebrew Academy to receive recognition as one of the nation s premier day schools. You also ensure its ongoing commitment to Israel - which is so evident by the high percentage of alumni who participate in a post-graduate study program in Israel, with many hundreds choosing to make Israel their home. Mr. Stephen Hoffman, President, Jewish Federation of Cleveland 3
4 RABBI YITZCHOK SCHEINER VISITS THE ACADEMY It was a zechus and a life-altering opportunity for the Hebrew Academy to host the venerable Rabbi Yitzchok Scheiner, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshivas Kaminetz and member, Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in Israel. Rabbi Scheiner addressed the Kollel, Yeshiva High School, Yeshiva Ketana, and the talmidos in our Yavne High School and Girls Elementary and divisions. On Sunday evening, Rabbi Scheiner addressed the community under the umbrella of the Academy s Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev. One of Rav Scheiner s inspiring messages was that each individual is special, with a malach, angel in Shomayim, Heaven watching over each one of us; and that we should express thanks to Hashem each day for all the good He bestows upon us. The entire Academy family will long remember this unique opportunity to personally hear the words of a Gadol. 4
5 ACADEMY ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF DR.YOEL SCHWARTZ AS GENERAL STUDIES PRINCIPAL The Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Yoel Schwartz as Principal of the General Studies Department. Dr. Schwartz, an alumnus of Ner Israel Rabbinical College, Baltimore, earned a master s degree from Yeshiva University s Wurtzweiler School of Social Work and his doctorate from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Schwartz has served as a Learning Specialist, School Psychologist, and Principal of General Studies at the Yeshiva of Greater Washington and Principal of Yeshivat Rambam, Baltimore. Dr. Schwartz was founder and Head of Ashreinu and was involved in all aspects of administration, curriculum design and implementation. For the past fifteen years, Dr. Schwartz also maintained a part-time private practice in clinical psychology. Dr. Schwartz is excited about joining the Hebrew Academy and exclaims, I have heard so many wonderful things about the Hebrew Academy. It is a true bracha for my entire family to become part of your wonderful school and special community. Energetic, creative, and a skilled professional, Dr. Schwartz will be a wonderful asset to our administrative team of educators and will build upon our school s high standards and achievements in its pursuit of excellence in education.
