3 SPEAKERS OLIVER SHAW - DETECTIVE CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT, ECONOMIC CRIME DIRECTORATE, CITY OF LONDON POLICE Oliver joined the City of London Police in 1994 and has served in a variety of uniform and detective roles- both in general criminal investigation and specialist fi elds. Oliver was promoted onto the Force s Economic Crime Department in 2004 and has overseen a number of high profi le fraud investigations. He was staff offi cer to Commissioners James Hart and Mike Bowron for their work as the Association of Chief Police Offi cers leads on Economic Crime, co-ordinating signifi cant research programmes including The Nature, Extent and Economic Impact of Fraud in the UK which paved the way for creation of the UK s Annual Fraud Indicator (AFI). Oliver also served on the Attorney General s National Fraud Review a precursor to the National Fraud Authority, Action Fraud (the UK s central fraud reporting system) and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), the latter of which houses a cyber enabled fraud facility. Oliver is currently head of the Force s Economic Crime Directorate, a 300 strong team of specialists with a broad remit spanning intelligence, prevention and enforcement activity. ALISON OZANNE - DISPUTE RESOLUTION PARTNER, AO HALL Alison heads the Dispute Resolution team. She has considerable experience in relation to trust, banking, insolvency and insurance litigation, as well as general corporate disputes. She appears regularly in front of the Royal Court and Court of Appeal. Alison often speaks at conferences in Guernsey, the UK and internationally, particularly in relation to trust litigation, corporate governance and AML issues. Chambers UK 2013 described her as high octane, focused and energetic. She is lively entertaining and extremely clever also effective resilient and relentless ELSPETH TALBOT-RICE QC - XXIV OLD BUILDINGS, LONDON Elspeth is well known and very highly regarded for her international trusts and private client expertise. She acts in international trust matters for private clients and commercial enterprises across the globe. Chambers & Partners, Chambers Global and Legal 500 as well as Citywealth Leaders all recommend her as a leading silk. She is also listed as a top barrister in Legal Week s International Trusts and Private Client Elite. Clients describe her as The silk of choice for a number of offshore solicitors with a wonderfully astute legal brain, responsive, thorough and tremendous with clients as well as an admirably tenacious advocate and seasoned litigator, highly versatile, ferocious on her feet an absolute star and a delight to work with. STEPHEN BAKER - SENIOR PARTNER, BAKER AND PARTNERS, JERSEY Stephen Baker is an English barrister and Jersey Advocate. Stephen undertakes a wide range of extremely complex civil litigation. He acted for the Second Defendant in UCC v Bender & Koonmen, a substantial constructive trust and restitutionary claim. He also regularly acts for foreign governments in asset recovery actions. In recent years he has acted for the Federal Republic of Brazil, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and the Kenyan Anti-Corruption Commission. He is an expert in the interaction between the civil and criminal law in fraud cases. Stephen also acted for the Federal Republic of Brazil in its fi rst substantial asset recovery action outside of the territory seeking the recovery of assets held through a Jersey unit trust; allegedly to the benefi t of a senior Brazilian politician.
4 DR AUDREY GILES - GILES DOCUMENT LABORATORY SPEAKERS Dr Audrey Giles B.Sc (Hons), Ph.D., is a forensic scientist specialising in the scientifi c examination of documents, handwriting and signatures. She was formerly the Head of the Questioned Documents Section of the Metropolitan Police Laboratory (Scotland Yard). Since 1990 she has led the scientifi c work of the Giles Document Laboratory where she is fully supported by technical, administrative and information technology staff. With over thirty-seven years experience, Dr Giles is one of the foremost authorities in her fi eld. PAUL BUCKLE - GROUP PARTNER, FIDUCIARY AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION, AO HALL Paul specialises in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious trust and pensions law. Since his qualifi cation as a solicitor into the pensions department of a major City fi rm in 1995, Paul has advised institutional and individual clients on the creation, administration and termination of all manner of pension arrangements and associated litigation. He is widely regarded as Guernsey s only longstanding pensions specialist trust and pension matters, and has been involved in many of Guernsey s leading trust cases in recent years. CLAIRE BROADBELT - FRAUD DEFENCE, PARTNER, MISHCON DE REYA SOLICITORS Claire s specialism is in pursuing or defending complex commercial and corporate fraud, and specifi cally serious allegations of fraud or misconduct: the diversion of business opportunities, breaches of fi duciary duty, claims of deceit, breach of confi dence, unlawful conspiracy to injure, bribery and secret profi ts. She has acted in numerous cases involving asset tracing and recovery, and the issuing or defending of freezing and search orders and other associated injunctions. Claire acts for corporates and high-profi le individuals in both claimant and defendant-led High Court cases. These cover a broad range of sectors including banking, IT, retail and property, often with an international dimension. Claire also has experience of acting as Court approved Supervising Solicitor for search orders, delivery up orders and other injunctions. She is a former chairperson of the Young Fraud Lawyers Association (YFLA), a member of the London Criminal Court Solicitors Association, the Fraud Lawyers Association and Fraud Women s Network and a co-founder of Mishcon s Criminal Law Panel. DANIEL WARENTS, BARRISTER - XXIV OLD BUILDINGS Daniel has a wide-ranging commercial practice covering not only fraud and asset tracing but also general commercial litigation, arbitration, aviation, banking and fi nancial services, company, pensions as well as trusts, probate and estates. He has signifi cant offshore/international experience which gives him particular expertise in fraud and asset tracing cases.
5 SPEAKERS MATT SANDERS - CORPORATE GROUP PARTNER, AO HALL Matt joined AO Hall in 2009 and regularly advises a range of clients on corporate and commercial matters, including investment fund establishment and regulation, fi nancing transactions, corporate acquisitions and disposals, and commercial regulation. Chambers Europe describes him as one to look out for and that his technical ability and sharp eye for detail are always impressive. PENNY CASSELL - DIRECTOR, KRYS GLOBAL, CAYMAN OFFICE Penny Cassell is a Director in the Cayman Islands offi ce of KRyS Global and has more than 20 years experience in insolvency, corporate recovery and forensic accountancy. Penny has worked on a wide range of assignments involving a number of jurisdictions, in Europe, the US, Africa, Australia, Hong Kong and offshore. Penny is a Chartered Accountant and UK licensed insolvency practitioner. She has extensive experience of working with corporate clients as well as regulatory and law enforcement authorities. Penny spent most of 2007 on secondment to the Serious Fraud Offi ce in the UK. In conducting asset and cash tracing investigations, Penny has regularly used the powers of the receiver, liquidator or trustee to obtain information. She is also very familiar with the use of forensic technology to assist in the analysis, and the preparation of evidence and reports for use in court proceedings and mediation. She is currently instructed as an expert in two cash tracing matters applying equitable tracing principles in cases before the courts in Guernsey and the British Virgin Islands. SARAH BREHAUT - DISPUTE RESOLUTION SENIOR ASSOCIATE, AO HALL Sarah joined AO Hall in 2011 following an extensive career at the Guernsey Bar, commencing in Sarah was called to the Guernsey Bar in January 2001 and in 2004 became the youngest female partner of a Guernsey law fi rm. Sarah has signifi cant experience in all aspects of dispute resolution and has previously specialised in private client work involving family, civil and criminal representation. Following her move to AO Hall her focus is now on high value commercial disputes primarily trust, banking and general corporate disputes. She was recently successful in the Court of Appeal in Newmarket Holdings (Guernsey) Limited v Musa Holdings Limited (2014). She also has considerable experience of appearing in the Magistrate s Court and Royal Court.
