3 Friuli Venezia Giulia offers a wide choice of courses The selection of golf courses in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region is second to none, both in terms of their technical features and as regards the variety of natural backgrounds embracing them. The seven Golf Clubs in the region are located in very different settings: from the marvellous mountain backdrop near Tarvisio and the unusual Karst terrain around Trieste, to the splendid hilly panoramas in Gorizia and the foothills, and the enchanting coastline. Friuli Venezia Giulia is also a magnificent, heterogeneous region to explore between a putt and a drive. The greatest distance between two courses is two hours at most by car, thanks to the motorway network which crosses the whole region from north to south. The international Ronchi dei Legionari airport is also in a very central position, making arrivals and departures easier. 11 golf among secular trees and glittering water The Pordenone golf club has just extended its course to 18 holes, attaining an overall 72-par course of 5980 metres. The first 9- hole circuit extends over a hilly terrain inside the prestigious natural park of Villa Policreti, a residence of particular historic and architectural interest erected in the 16th century. Now an elegant hotel, the villa houses a renown restaurant and the clubhouse, overlooking the lush green golf course. The second, more recently built, 9 holes extend over a flat terrain enhanced by three lakes. It features long holes and a spectacular backdrop of the often snow-covered mount Cavallo and a view of the ancient Borgo del Castello D Aviano. The Golf Club Castel d Aviano lies in a stunning natural context and offers an exciting game for players who are sure to be enthralled by the challenge of tricky doglegs, slightly sloping greens and obstacles which make the game fun and creative.

Immediately after the American military base in Aviano, turn right and proceed for 2 km. The golf club is on the right. From the A4 motorway, exit at Pordenone.

Close by is Lago di Barcis, a charming lake where you can immerse yourself in the marvellous unspoilt nature reflected in its waters. If you would like to continue with the path, you could also admire the spectacular scenery of the Dolomites of Friuli, Natural Heritage of UNESCO. And it is well worth going for a stroll down the wonderful Corso Vittorio Emanuele in the heart of Pordenone. This very interesting town not only offers shopping for handicrafts, food and wine, but also envelops you in the history and culture of its marvellous palazzos and landmark events.

Embraced by the hills surrounding Gorizia, the course features various landscapes, diversifying the very dissimilar fairways and holes. The course is overlooked by a charming 13th century castle, whose 15 hotel rooms/suite, all look out over the stretches of vineyards framing the course. Gourmets simply must try out the Tavernetta al castello restaurant, which serves local dishes, or try the original tasting lounge at La Boatina, a farmhouse also offering accommodation in 5 rooms.

A land of farmhouses and wineries offering top quality food and wine, and a land of hospitality and friendship where owners hurry to open up their wine cellars and their kitchens to let you taste how special their home produce is. In nearby Gorizia, you can visit the medieval castle imbued in millenary history, which now houses the original Museo della Moda. We also recommend the historic itineraries on the Great War, with a visit to the Museo della Grande Guerra and a walk outside the town, discovering the trenches, bunkers and other sites where numerous battles took place.

27 green within a faunal area The Golf Club Grado lies in an extremely charming location: the 18-hole course, flanked by the executive 9 holes for players with less experience, overlooks the Grado lagoon and stretches over 60 hectares of terrain bordered by cane thickets: the ideal natural habitat of herons, wild swans, flamingos and other typical lagoon species. The course is a feather in the cap of the Tenuta Primero, whose impressive hospitality facilities include the marina, with over 200 moorings, and the smart restaurant Casone famed for its fine local cuisine. The impressive course features spacious greens guarded by water obstacles and very large, deep bunkers, for an even more challenging game. A very long and choreographic 12th hole is particularly tricky with a dogleg right and a marvellous green situated on an island. The secretary offices are lively and welcoming and house a well-stocked pro-shop, while the clubhouse houses the renown Casone restaurant, offering regional specialities and fish dishes served with fine local wine. Ten Suites del Porto with a marvellous view of the Marina Primero have recently been opened to accommodate guests.

35 18 holes a stone s throw from the sea An original 18-hole golf course lies a stone s throw away from the sea and fun to be had in the renown seaside resort of Lignano, situated between the mouth of the Tagliamento and the Marano Lagoon. The 72-par course extends over 70 hectares of beautifully tended greens which will excite players of all levels. The course features long fairways (for perfect tee shots), spacious greens (guarded by water obstacles) and vast natural sandy roughs (from Arizona), and the 18 holes are perfectly placed between the expanses of water and the lush vegetation of the pinewood, creating a varied and engaging game. After a game, you can indulge in a little relaxation at the elegant clubhouse housing the secretary offices, a restaurant and pro-shop, as well as a conference hall and a stunning panoramic terrace. 43 playing at the foot of the Giulian Alps At 800 metres above sea level, Tarvisio offers a characteristic mountain course with spacious natural fairways originally designed by Giacomo Cabrini in 1992, and extended to 18 holes in 2003 by the Canadian architect Graham Cooke, whose restyling can be seen in his signature gentle undulations. Embraced by the splendid landscape of the towering rocky peaks of the Giulian Alps, the technically interesting course provides 18 holes in such a stunning setting that each game is an unforgettable experience. The course stretches out through the woods of the splendid Tarvisio forest and features spacious greens occasionally hidden among the pine trees and beeches, often guarded by bunkers or by steep dips making the approach to the green difficult for even the most expert players. The 2nd hole is remarkably beautiful: at the foot of the rocky Mangart mountain (2677 m) with a long uphill green providing various levels of difficulty, it offers 360 panoramic views across the whole valley. The original clubhouse is situated in the middle of the course; furnished in perfect mountain style, it houses the pro-shop and a restaurant, whose spacious panoramic terrace overlooks the course and the surrounding mountains.

48 Not only golf and if you would like to enjoy the Tarvisio area, you simply must visit the dell of the Fusine lakes, one of the most enchanting places in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Nestled in a thick wood of spruces, the lakes of glacial origin are today the only place where you can grasp how serene and impressive mother nature really is. Monte Lussari is another gem of incomparable beauty. Here you can admire a splendid natural setting of majestic, spiring peaks. Besides being a place of naturalistic interest, it is also the site of a sanctuary erected in 1360, and a place of pilgrimage for the Slav, Italian and German peoples. This age-old melting pot of the three ethnic groups can be found in the cooking which yields its best fruits in these mountains. Alongside typical mountain dishes, such as game, mushrooms and cheeses, you can also savour excellent fish dishes. This has led to many restaurants and trattorias serving dishes good enough to delight any gourmet.

51 putt braving the bora The Golf Club Trieste was the first club in Friuli Venezia Giulia to be founded by the allied troops straight after the Second World War, and it celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in The course is a few minutes away from the Slovenian border and overlooks the stunning view of the Gulf of Trieste. The green at the 17th hole looks as if it is suspended over the sea, with splendid views stretching from the Grado lagoon and Lignano, right across to the Istrian coast. The whole of the 72-par, 5810-metre course nestles perfectly among the rugged hills of the Karst uplands, bordered by oaks and Mediterranean pines. The course looks fairly easy at first glance, but it should not be treated lightly. Technique, accuracy and concentration are essential at the narrower holes, where there are plenty of tricky parts and impossible roughs, especially when the Bora wind blows off the gulf, making the course even more challenging.

56 Not only golf and if you would like to relax a little in Trieste, nip down for a stroll through its splendid town centre, where you can do some shopping, take a rest on the seafront or eat some delicious fish caught in the gulf. Seafood is an essential ingredient in the Triestine cuisine. The town is dotted with countless restaurants, for all wallet sizes, serving fish and shellfish in all shapes and sizes. Sardoni are the most popular fish and they are normally served fried, in breadcrumbs, or in savor (fried and marinated in vinegar and onion). But there is also bass, sea bream, tuna fish, mussels, clams, cuttlefish and all the seafood the fish market offers, both from the Gulf and imported. If, on the other hand, you would prefer a historical and cultural visit to the region s capital, we recommend a tour of the three castles: Castello di San Giusto, the town s place of origin, with its spectacular view of the whole gulf; Castello di Miramare, the love nest of Maximilian of Hapsburg and Charlotte of Belgium and, finally, Castello di Duino, where the family of the Princes of Torre and Tasso still reside.

59 drives immersed in the Friulian hills At just 5 kilometres from San Daniele, you find 18 splendid holes against a backdrop of hills dotted with secular oaks, beeches and wild cherry trees. This is the Golf Club Udine. Founded in 1972, the course is situated in Fagagna, in the heart of the morenic Friulian hills at just 18 km from Udine; it combines the pleasure of playing golf with an exclusive and relaxing landscape. The original 9-hole course was designed by architects John Harris and Marco Croze; over the years it has been completed by Marco Croze, who has extended it to a harmonious course of 18 holes over 60 hectares. The 72 par competition course is undoubtedly challenging, thanks in particular to the numerous natural obstacles dotted around its over 6000 metres: bunkers guarding the greens, trees and shrubs midway, slopes and dips and water obstacles which sometimes cross the entire fairway.

64 Not only golf and if you would like to relax in Friuli, wandering around the countryside outside Udine can be a unique experience. The excellent wines and famed San Daniele prosciutto are landmark products of this region which are produced and aged in this area. Of course, it follows that you simply must go and visit the charming nearby town of San Daniele, to have a taste of its very sweet prosciutto, and to call in at one of the many wineries to taste some delicious nectars. From a cultural point of view, we suggest a visit to the magnificent Villa Manin, one of the most significant artistic monuments of Friuli Venezia Giulia, center of important art exhibitions of international interest. If you're more interested in the natural features of the region, could be an emotion seeing a griffon vulture and other types of flora and fauna in the magnificent Natural Reserve at Lago di Cornino.
