1 BI-SLR HEARTS SPRING NEWSLETTER 2013 ANNOUNCEMENTS Mini-Grant Awarded Dr. Branson was awarded one of three minigrants from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) to analyze the NCTSN Core Data Set, which includes information from more than 14,000 youth served by NCTSN sites. Dr. Branson is collaborating with investigators from UCLA and the University of Connecticut to examine the impact of polyvictimization (i.e., exposure to multiple traumas) on juvenile justice involvement and impairment among adolescents. Military Screening Begins We have begun screening for military families at Pediatrics 2000, a free standing pediatric clinic in the Bronx. This screening is integrated into the Pediatric Wellness Screenings administered by Roger Mazanarez at the Child and Family Institute. We ask if families have members in the military and offer fact sheets and resources to help them adjust. We also offer them a psychotherapy referral to the Child and Family Institute or elsewhere if requested. New Justice Work Groups As Co-Chair of the NCTSN Justice committee, Dr. Branson, initiated two workgroups to develop trauma-informed resources. The first group will develop products to spread awareness about the prevalence of domestic child sex trafficking among girls involved in the juvenile justice system. The second workgroup will create trauma-informed fact sheets for Attorneys in Family and Juvenile courts. The groups include members of the NCTSN and other national organizations. Staff Promotion Emily Upshur, PhD, returned from Maternity leave this quarter to a new role both in the hospital and on our research team. Dr. Upshur is now an Assistant Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the Outpatient Psychiatry Multi-Cultural Coordinator and Supervising Psychologist at Beth Israel Medical Center, and is the Clinical Director of the HEARTS Program. Dr. Ham s TV Appearance Dr. Ham appeared on Arise America TV to discuss the Boston Bombings though a traumainformed lens. The program aired during the time when the police were looking for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on Friday, April 19, 2013.

2 ANNOUNCEMENTS (continued) Arise America TV is a recently launched global news channel founded by a Nigerian publisher, with a mission to reflect the "experiences of under-served communities, championing the voices of the African diaspora across all continents. Ham and Branson, and RA s Annabelle Moore and Isamar Valette traveled to Philadelphia to attend the NCTSN s All-Network Conference and present various workshops and minigroups. Dr. Branson presented Lessons Learned from the Juvenile Justice Roundtable: A Focus on Family and Youth Engagement. Dr. Ham delivered two presentations: Heart Headed Resiliency: The Foundation to Healing Clinical Presence and Beyond the Traditional Therapy Hour: Innovative Approaches to Complex Trauma Intervention with Children and Families. Dr. Ham also served on the steering committee. Annabelle and Isamar promoted the program at the Networking Fair. Give an Hour Conference BI-SLR HEARTS helped Give an Hour organize and promote A Celebration of Service Training the Next Generation conference on June 2-3, 2013 in New York City. This two-day event included a full-day conference training the next generation of mental health professionals while encouraging voluntarism, engaging communities, and creating awareness of the need for critical mental health services. Dr. Ham also attended the MOU Signing Ceremony between Give an Hour and the Army National Guard, which launched their association to expand mental health services to military personnel and their families. The link to the full day training conference can be found on our website, Training Begins in TARGET Drs. Branson and Ham began a three-week trainer certification program in Trauma Affect Regulation: Guide for Education & Therapy (TARGET), an evidence-based treatment for traumatic stress. This model focuses on teaching people how to gain control over their trauma-related reactions as they are triggered by current daily life stressors. We will begin using it in our own clinical work and at some of our partner agencies serving justice-involved youth. By the end of summer, we will be fully certified to train others in TARGET and will look for opportunities to do so.

3 WORK IN THE COMMUNITY In our efforts to become a trauma treatment resource for New York City, we worked with several community agencies to help them be able to better serve the needs of traumatized children and youth. Denim Day 2013 Denim Day is a yearly event to raise awareness of sexual assault and sexual trauma. It refers to a rape prosecution in Italy in the 1990s that the Italian Supreme Court overturned because the young woman wore very tight jeans, so must have helped to take them off, implying consent. We shared NCTSN materials with Beth Israel s Rape Crisis and Domestic Violence Intervention Program at their Denim Day table in Beth Israel's main lobby. NCTSN handouts included English and Spanish versions of "Preventing Acquaintance Rape: A safety guide for teens" and "What Do I Do Now? A survival guide for victims of acquaintance rape" Children s Mental Health Awareness Day 2013 In observance of National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day, we distributed flyers we created discussing social connectedness in adolescence, in English and Spanish, with links to NCTSN resources along with the flyer for the National Action Partnership on Poly-victimization Webinar Series. Arts to End Violence Festival Dr. Ham and Isamar Valette attended the gallery opening of the Arts to End Violence Festival hosted by the Crown Heights Mediation Center. On display were original works of art created by youth in the Crown Heights Community. Dr. Ham served on the judge s panel. PeaceOverViolence.org Dr. Ham and Amy Ellenbogen, Director of CHMC

4 TRAININGS FOR CITY AGENCIES We have been delivering trainings on trauma-informed engagement strategies to various city-led initiatives and agencies serving some of our most vulnerable Young Men s Initiative populations. Why We Do Mayor Bloomberg s Young Men s Initiative (YMI) is a cross-agency enterprise attempting to promote new programs and policies intended to diminish the disparities between young black and Latino men and their peers in the areas of education, health, employment and the criminal justice system. Dr. Ham held two workshops on traumainformed engagement strategies for over 100 staff members of employment agencies in this initiative. Because of the success of this program, NYC s Center for Economic Opportunity is looking for funding to support a series of web-trainings on this topic for all YMI staff. Department of Youth and Community Development The Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) was established to provide high-quality youth and family programming. Dr. Ham gave a presentation on traumainformed engagement strategies to 50 staff of agencies serving homeless and runaway youth. He has been invited to deliver this training every year as part of the DYCD training curriculum. What We Do We believe that child traumatic stress is a public health epidemic that impacts too many of our nation s children and families. One large-scale study found that 68% of participants had experienced at least one potentially traumatic event by the age of 16 (Copeland, Keeler, Angold & Costello, 2007). These high rates of traumatic stress cost the nation too much in terms of health outcomes and economic burden. According to a CDC study released earlier this year, just one year of confirmed cases of child maltreatment costs $124 billion over the lifetime of the traumatized children. We also believe that traumatic stress is something from which all children, youth and families can recover and even grow stronger.

5 Beth Israel Medical Center presents: Imagining a New Framework for Sexual Health: Redefining Sexuality Post-Trauma with Douglas Braun-Harvey, LMFT, CGP, CST & Al Killen-Harvey, LCSW Founders of The Harvey Institute: Improving Health Care Outcomes through Integration of Sexual Health November 22, AM 1PM Podell Auditorium, Bernstein Pavilion, 10 Nathan D. Perlman Place, NY, NY Sexual health is an essential new clinical resource for sexual trauma treatment professionals. By incorporating the principles of sexual health, clinicians will uncover sexual attitudes and taboos that are barriers for attaining sexual health knowledge. Mr. Braun-Harvey and Mr. Killen-Harvey of The Harvey Institute will provide a map for increasing trauma therapist s comfort, willingness and knowledge to initiate and facilitate sexual health conversations. They propose six fundamentals of sexual health as a treatment frame and guide for client sexual health conversation within their individual, couple, and family therapy. Workshop participants will learn how to advocate for comprehensive sexual health training as an ally for successful sexual trauma assessment and treatment.
