1 Digest Grades K- Published by University of Missouri Extension Food Power was FUN! Remember, germs are invisible! So wash your hands before you eat. You learned a lot about nutrition and physical activity today. The Food Power Digest is full of activities to help you remember what you did. You can also take it home to your family to tell them what you learned about making healthy choices. Food Power Adventure stopped at your school today. The adventure began at the pizza farm, because all food starts at the farm. Then you followed milk from the farm to the carton and learned how much milk to drink every day. Then you saw invisible germs with a special light. You also learned a song to sing while you wash germs off your hands. Next you went to the cafeteria to choose a variety of food. In the mouth, you began breaking food down in a process called digestion. You saw what food looks like mixed up in your stomach. You touched the villi that soak up food in the small intestine. You used the energy from food and made your muscles and bones stronger by exercising. Finally, you learned to build bones with foods from the Dairy Group. It was fun to learn about eating healthy food and exercise. Dear Family, Your child recently visited Food Power Adventure. The Adventure teaches children about physical activity and making healthy food choices. Do you want your children to reach for healthy snacks? Make sure fruits and veggies are available and that you choose these snacks, too. Children learn from watching you. Encourage them to participate in physical activities and join them. Go for a walk, ride bikes or visit a local playground. Don t forget that your children are still growing. Help your kids grow strong by serving fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products at meals. Making good food choices and keeping active will help keep your children strong and healthy.

3 Milk from farm to you As we learned in the Food Power Adventure, milk takes a trip from the cow to you. Put the pictures of the trip milk takes from the cow to you in the correct order by numbering them:,,,,, and 7. A B C D E F G Answers: A-, B-, C-7, D-, E-, F-, G-

4 You can t see germs, but they are there. Get rid of germs by washing your hands with soap and warm water for 0 seconds. Wash between your fingers, both sides of your hands and wrists. Don t forget your fingernails because germs may be hiding there. Using hand sanitizer is OK if you don t have soap and water. Washing with soap and water is always the best choice to kill germs and keep your hands clean. Yummy Yogurt Treat What you need: medium strawberries, sliced (-ounce) container yogurt, any flavor ¼ cup granola Directions:. Place strawberries in a cup.. 6 Start Dairy maze Your body needs three Dairy Group foods every day. Follow the maze by passing three foods that come from the dairy group. Did you know? Digestion starts in your mouth when your teeth break food down into smaller pieces. saliva teeth It takes 0 seconds for food to get from your mouth to your stomach. Food can get to your stomach even if you stand on your head. That s because the muscles in your esophagus squeeze the food to your stomach. tongue villi esophagus stomach Your stomach can hold food for up to three hours. Your intestine is as long as a school bus - that s 0 feet! small intestine to large intestine

Bones need exercise to be strong. All of these sentences are true. Bones give our bodies their shape and they hold our bodies up. They also protect parts of our bodies like our brain, heart and lungs. Bones work together with muscles to help our bodies move. To keep our bones healthy and strong we need calcium and exercise every day.
