Executive Summary In fall 2013, HOB conducted primary research of decision makers in the area of remote access. Titled The State of Remote Access Security, the survey polled 202 CTOs and CIOs in the United States and quantified the trends, opportunities and challenges they experience As the mobile workforce has become increasingly more commonplace, HOB has recognized the growing market for remote access solutions and managed services as a significant opportunity to educate CTOs and CIOs on key trends to be aware of. when utilizing remote access solutions. 3
Summary of Key Findings The way employees utilize remote access is evolving. These findings highlight how remote access is gaining significant momentum in today s mobile and cloud-based There are three primary concerns regarding remote access security issues. workforce. Furthermore, the findings reveal the real concerns of CTOs and CIOs and underscore the increased need for a robust mobile workforce strategy. CTOs and CIOs anticipate an increase in funding for IT security solutions. 4
About Survey Respondents Survey respondents included CTOs and CIOs from across the United States, with 88% of them responsible for researching, selecting or deploying remote access solutions for their organization. Thirty-two percent of survey respondents have employees in their organization that require remote access and 19% have more than

Key Findings Key Finding 1: CTOs and CIOs have noticed key differences in the way their employees utilize remote access. In today s fast paced business environment, employees transcend time zones and continents so it is no surprise that 76% of respondents employees access their organization s server when they are away from the office. Internet access, the mobile workforce is better connected than ever. As businesses compete in a global economy, it is important to provide their mobile workforce with the proper tools to facilitate productivity and ease of use as well as develop a mobility strategy. With the use of smart phones, tablets, laptop computers and ubiquitous The various benefits of the mobile workforce include improved work-life balance, increased productivity and more flexibility. 7
The study notes that 58% of employees access their organization s server when they are in the office but in another location within the on-site work environment.this coul be another building on a corporate campus, a conference room or a special work pod area designed to foster group collaboration or provide a private, quiet place to work. While many employees apart of the mobile workforce primarily use their personal devices to access the server offsite from a remote location, there is an increasing number of employees that access enterprise data via a virtual private network while still in the office. The mobile workforce is not limited to employees working from home, Internet cafes, hotel rooms or other remote settings. It is important that businesses recognize these new and unique mobile workforce configurations and turn them into a strategic competitive advantage. By creating a mobile workforce strategy that will identify relevant solutions for the needs of each remote worker type, businesses can help ensure long-term success as well as data security. The State of Remote Access Security Survey also found that 46% of employees access their desktop computers when they are away from the office. This again shows the differences between the ways various members of the mobile workforce function. While some mobile workers only access their organization s server, others prefer remote desktop access. 8
9
Key Finding 2: CTOs and CIOs have three primary concerns regarding remote access security issues. In terms of the most troubling remote access security issues for CTOs and CIOs, 66% are concerned with hackers gaining access to the network during employee remote access sessions. While VPNs typically provide sufficient security for enterprise data, some hackers have been able to break through twofactor authentication or find vulnerability in a web application, exploit it and gain In addition to the fear of hackers gaining access to the network during employee remote access sessions, 56% of CTOs and CIOs are highly concerned with employees accessing the network through their personal devices, including smartphones, laptops and tablets. As the on-the-go workforce became more prevalent in 2013, IT managers have had less control than ever over enterprise data access from a myriad of devices. IT managers have also had more difficulty determining which devices are accessing which systems and data. access to an enterprise s network. 10
11
It is no surprise that 56% of CTOs and CIOs find employees accessing the network through their personal devices is a basic concern, and it is even less surprising that 26% of respondents find employee access to the network via personal devices their biggest concern. Lost or stolen devices can result in a data breach on unmanaged devices. Furthermore, IT managers tend to lose data access visibility when multiple of personal, unmanaged devices are connecting to the network. While the use of personal mobile devices in the workplace is pervasive, respondents who are especially concerned about employee access to the network via personal devices are struggling to implement a mobile workforce security policy. A comprehensive mobile workforce security policy should clarify the lines of responsibility for device maintenance and support, enable two-factor authentication and require employees to remove applications at the request of the organization. Interestingly, 50% of CTOs and CIOs find errors by the IT team that leave the network open for intrusions to be among the most troubling remote access security issues. 12
13
Remote access security threats have become more technically sophisticated, better organized and harder to detect. Furthermore, failing to halt these attacks have increasingly severe consequences. A simple oversight of a security hole by the IT team may result in the exposure of sensitive enterprise data, in addition to financial fraud or a complete enterprise The concern regarding IT team errors leaving the network open for intrusions suggests that enterprises need new strategies to fight advanced attacks. IT teams should develop tactics that focus on the usage of software and systems and investigate suspicious behaviors that are known to be associated with malicious activity. shut down, hence the high concern from survey respondents. 14
Key Finding 3: CTOs and CIOs anticipate an increase in funding for IT security solutions. Forty-six percent of technology professionals surveyed expect IT security spending to increase 1 25% in 2014 and 31% expect it to increase by more than 25%. This comes as no surprise as a total of 72% of respondents also anticipate the number of employees requiring remote access to increase over the next 12 months. This includes 38% anticipating up to a 25% increase, 27% anticipating up to a 50% increase and 7% anticipating up to a 100% increase. 15
16
Gartner s 2013 IT Spending Forecast supports this trend as it predicted a 4.2% increase in overall IT spending for 2013, and a 3.8% growth in Key drivers of the anticipated funding growth include Additional Findings 58% of respondents learn about new remote access solutions from print and online media that cover the networking industry the increased need for robust security procedures as well as the overriding need of employees to use remote access solutions. It is likely that mobile device management and remote access security 45% of respondents learn about new remote access solutions from print and online media that cover the distributor/var industry will benefit from the increased budgets. These additional findings indicate the Interestingly, 20% of respondents believe that IT security spending will remain flat in 2014, while 3% suggest that it will channels which remote access providers might consider to market their products to CTOs and CIOs. decrease. 17
18
Conclusion Remote access security is one of the most critical aspects of any company s security policy. Securing servers is important, as sensitive enterprise data is stored there and an insecure network can easily lead to a breach that results in a tarnished brand reputation, decreased customer confidence or data loss. The State of Remote Access Security Survey shows that organizations are increasingly worried about various remote access security issues. However, the anticipated increase in IT budgets should allow CTOs and CIOs invest in the proper tools that will ensure high security as well as fit the needs of the mobile workforce. 19
