3 Message from the Director It is with great pleasure that I welcome you for the Counseling Psychology Certificate Courses leading to a Diploma, conducted by the Institute of Human Resource Advancement at the University of Colombo (IHRA-UOC). You are privileged to be a student of the University of Colombo which is a leading education provider, and we expect that you will contribute for further advancement of the Institute. Counseling is a highly imperative job description in the modern day society. Counseling psychology as a psychological specialty facilitates personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span with focus on emotional, social, vocational, educational, health, developmental, and organizational concerns. Through the integration of theory, research, and practice, and with sensitivity to multicultural issues, this specialty encompasses a broad range of practices that help people improve their well-being, alleviate distress and maladjustment, resolve crises, and increase their ability to live more highly productive lives. IHRA is committed towards the advancement of human resources for sustainable development of the nation. I am happy to witness the inauguration of the third batch for Diploma in Counseling Psychology offered by the IHRA. Training provided by this institute help our students make decisions with greater confidence regarding their own career choices and pursuits. This approach is beneficial to individual trainees, valuable to the organizations that employ them and overall helpful to society. This assures alignment of people with work that is meaningful, satisfying, and necessary. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed through dedication, motivation and enthusiasm to make it successful. We look forward to working with you and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Dr. Rohan P Perera, MS, PhD (USA) Director IHRA Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry and Toxicology University of Colombo
4 Message from the Course Facilitator This is a good opportunity for the students wish embark on a career in professional counseling. There certificate course leading to Diploma in counseling was introduced in 2011 by the University of Colombo for the first time in Sri Lanka. As aworld recognized University, the Certificates and Diplomas awarded by the Colombo University will have great value and recognition. Those who successfully complete the course will awarded the Diploma by the University of Colombo. In keeping with the vision of the IHRA of University of Colombo, the Director,Dr Rohan Perera guided the course to meet the highest standards of professional excellence. The faculty staff members have been carefully selected in order to have a correct mix of academics and practitioners drawn from the field of counseling. The course modules are designed to address the need for the development of knowledge, skills and competencies required for a professional counselor. As a result, the course will have a practical bias. In fact, two thirds of the course contents will be delivered using methodologies involving practical sessions in counseling. These sessions will be handled by well-established personalities with a wide experience in counseling. In addition, I am happy to mention that the course demand is very high and course is very popular among the community. The students will assessed on the basis of their performance in practical exercises and not so much on their ability memorize like in typical examinations. In other words it is not an examination oriented course. In-course assessment, practical sessions and field work are an integral part of the assessment strategies of the course. I take this opportunity to wish all students registered in third batch, a bright future in their career as Counselors and I hope they will be a guiding force in serving the people of Sri Lanka by satisfying the growing need for counseling. Prasanna K Perera Course Facilitator / Lecturer Professional Counselor and Trainer Page 2
