2 President s Message Everyone deserves a pat on the back when a job is well done. That couldn t be more true than here at Choice One. 0% New Vehicle Financing A Myth? You may be surprised to learn that less than 10% of new car buyers actually qualify for 0% financing. That s because to get that rate you must have a very high credit score. I am always impressed at how dedicated our staff is. They go beyond my expectations to ensure that every time a member calls or comes to the credit union their experience is a pleasant one. They solve member problems and answer questions quickly and accurately. I see it happen every day. If you don t have a QR Code reader, you can download one from your providers applications store. In reality, most car buyers are switched to a much higher rate. Zero percent financing is simply an advertising tool to get more potential car buyers to come to the dealerships. Equally important, most of the manufacturer or dealer rate offers are for a shorter term, usually 36 months, increasing your monthly payment. The rate also may be limited to specific models or the dealers current inventory. For most members, taking any rebate and financing at the credit union is a better choice. We finance all makes and models and our flexible terms offer you more financing options. Preapproval Advantages You can also drive home a better deal when you have your loan preapproved. You ll know what your approximate payment will be and avoid the financing pressure at the dealership. Many times the price of the car is higher to compensate for the 0% financing. Ask for the price with and without the dealer financing. With cash-in-hand, you ll also be in a better position to negotiate the best possible price, saving you more over the life of your loan. 3 PA Unclaimed Property Policy Changes There have been several important changes to the Pennsylvania Disposition of Abandoned and Unclaimed Property Act, including reducing the dormancy period. The dormancy period of inactivity was reduced from five years to three years. If your account meets the criteria of being presumed abandoned or unclaimed for three years, as outlined in the Unclaimed Property Act, it must be reported and turned over to the Pennsylvania Treasury Department. Accounts are officially dormant after 6 months of no activity. If you have not made an account transaction within that timeframe, your account will be charged $2.00 per month until it reaches three years of inactivity. After three years, the account will be turned over to the Pennsylvania Treasury Department. For more information about this legislative change and others, visit - or scan the QR Code. There is no cost to participate in the meeting or election. It is your right as a member. 6 COMMUNITY EVENTS Christmas in July Fundraiser Choice One participated in the United Way Christmas in July fundraiser. Canned goods and paper products were collected in the lobbies of both of our branches. We also held a bake sale in the main branch on July 24th and 25th, with all of the baked goods donated by our staff. The sale raised a total $570 and we donated 1,312 pounds of food. We came in 2nd place for pounds collected at 42 pounds per person! Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a great success. 39th Annual Charity Golf Tournament Our 39th Annual Charity Golf Tournament was held Saturday June 28th at the Wilkes-Barre Municipal Golf Course. A total of 96 golfers participated. We raised $4,600 for two local charities the Weinberg Food Bank, a program of C.E.O., and the Saint Nicholas Parish Scholarship Fund (in memory of John P. Kebles, Jr.). Many thanks to all of our golfers and sponsors for your help and financial support. You made this year s tournament a super success! A Financial Head Start for Teens Choice One has a special program for young adults age 16 or older. They can take advantage of our Student Checking Account, Check/Debit (or ATM Card), and a Visa Classic Credit Card. Teens under age 18 will require a parent or guardian co-accountholder.
