3 Manual Training: My way to work This is the manual for the Training My way to work. Study this manual carefully before starting lessons with the students. Please see the methodology book for detailed information and instructions regarding the goals of each chapter of this manual My way to work. Goal of the Manual: Students learn how to behave in different situations and how to take care of themselves. Before you start: Make sure you and your students understand that this is a real training course. It has to be taken seriously. So the lessons will be given in a classroom. Just like any other lesson they will sit together as a class. The lessons work with so-called symbol pictures. Most students cannot read, they take information from what they see. So it is vital that the students understand the symbols. With each new symbol, you have to explain what is in it and what it means. Be visual. Use your body language, make drawings, let the students act out what they see in the symbol. Only move on if all students recognize the symbol. Maybe it will take some time. For some, it will be a new way of understanding. If you move on too quickly, the students will not understand the information and will lose interest. The Rules and What do we do in Training are a good start to see if your students are capable of understanding the symbols and to estimate if the level of learning is about the same for everyone in your class. If not, maybe you can make 2 different groups or give individual training, extra training or maybe it is not suitable at all. Learning has to be fun. Something that is too difficult is no fun and will not be successful. It will be stressful for both student and teacher. Time schedule You will start with a schedule of 1 lesson, each 30 minutes. Depending on the abilities of your students you might not be able to work through everything you planned. And not every group will need the same subjects. Plan your lessons, but do not be afraid to alter your schedule when during your course things do not work out the way you planned or when students want to share their feelings with you. You will have to adapt your schedule or decide to skip lessons. You may also have to decide to repeat lessons. Remember that your goal is to teach your students, this is more important than the number of lessons you finished. You can always decide to start a new course. Evaluation After giving a training, write down how it went, what you missed, what worked well, what didn t work and how the training could be improved. Also write down subjects you think would be good to include. 3

4 How to give a lesson As an example take lesson 1: Get acquainted. 1. Introduce the first symbol. Give hands to each other, explain the balloon and what you will say when you meet someone. Make sure all students understand the symbols and what they mean in daily life. 2. Read aloud the next page. It will be a repetition of what you did when introducing the symbol. Some students can read, let them read out loud. Check again if everybody understood. 3. Next page: act out every line. Make sure all students understand the symbols. 4. Practice all. 5. Explain homework. Next lesson: start with discussing homework. This will be a repetition of the first lesson and you can check if everybody understood the first lesson. If not, you have to repeat. 4
