1 PDS 2000 Hydrographic data acquisition and processing package GENERAL Reson s Hydrographic data acquisition, processing and dredge monitoring package PDS2000 is a Reson developed all-in-one software package. The software is developed by a team of programmers with a combination of IT and Hydrographic survey experience, resulting in a market driven package with practical features. PDS2000 fulfils the demands of the market for an easy to use program, performing under any circumstances. It is used for single beam and multibeam surveys and installed on various types of vessels. Typical users are Port Authorities, University Institutes, Private Survey companies, Dredging companies and Governmental bodies. The PDS2000 software team ensures that the PDS2000 software keeps up with the quickly changing market and client demands. Besides the PDS2000 software team, a dedicated PDS helpdesk is maintained in Rotterdam. The support engineers are also involved in major projects for project management and hardware/software training. This service is free for all our customers with a maintenance contract. PDS2000 is focused on the hydrographic and dredge markets. PDS2000 is an all-in one package, capable of data acquisition, realtime data editing, editing of the data, processing, volume calculations, 3D viewing and charting. PDS2000 Dredge Monitoring and support module are available for various types of Hopper Dredgers, Cutter Dredgers, Bucket Dredgers and Excavators. Each application can be supplied with sensors such as inclinometers, rotation sensors etc. These sensors are directly interfaced to PDS2000, which calculates and visualises all parameters and outlines in order to get a full integrated system. For more detailed information on the various modules see our Hydrographic and Dredge monitoring leaflet. It should be understood that the PDS2000 package is constantly developing. With the purchase of a PDS2000 package, a maintenance contract for one year is included. Upon exiry of this year, Reson can extend the maintenance contract, so that you will be up-to-date with the latest hydrographic technologies. Page 1 Date 25/10/04

2 PDS2000 features in short Control Center The main part of PDS2000 is the Control Center. The Control Center is used for the selection of the projects and configurations of the vessels and to execute the different modules. Due to the user-friendly Interface, which resembles the Windows Graphic User Interface, it is easy to operate. PDS2000 uses a wizard to set-up a new project. The wizard guides you through all parts of the project and vessel configuration so it is easy to use and easy to start your new survey. A new project can be started from a blank project or an existing project maybe used as a template copying existing lay-outs of the vessel and project. To select the correct co-ordinate system, databases are used for ellipsoids, datum transformations and projections to limit the choice to the co-ordinate systems used in a country. It is also possible to edit the files used for your survey e.g. your vessel configuration, runlines, waypoints and the databases. Also the modules for data acquisition, processing, volume computation, 3D visualisation and plotting are also executed from the Control Center. Data Acquisition and Real time Data Presentation These modules are used for real time data acquisition and presentation of all incoming data. All data are displayed in different windows. Using the display manager, it is easy to change the windows on the screen suitable for the survey and the user. PDS2000 offers the possibility of multiple screens (up to four) for surveyor and helmsman. All screen layouts can be saved and re-opened, simplifying the use of different screen layouts for different surveys. DXF or C-MAP charts can be used as back ground. In addition S57 can be imported through the C-MAP database and showed online. For Quality Control (QC) and Survey support different displays are available: helmsman display planview with electronic charts QC-windows as time series of all incoming data traffic light displays for status of equipment status of logging alarm windows messages waterfall displays raw data screens. An alarm window will always pop up on top of the screen if an alarm occurs. All screens are real-time updated for each individual data set, as soon as data comes in. A dedicated 3D helmsman display is available and can be selected on each screen. Page 2

3 One main feature of PDS2000 is docking windows. This feature docks the windows to either side of the screen and it is impossible to hide docked windows. It is possible to have more than one window docked in a row. All docked displays will stay visible. For Quality Control an on-line DTM is filled with Real Time corrected data for min/max and average depth, number of depths per cell and standard deviation. The cell size is user definable. It is possible to look at the data without interference of the helmsman display. This way you can look at the standard deviation of the DTM and number of values per cell, for quality control in a different area while the helmsman still looks at his own screen lay-out. A dedicated 3D display shows the DTM model in 3D and can be shown in combination with 3D design models and a 3D vessel. For online Multibeam data cleaning an on-line filtering and decimation for swath data is available. The filter-settings, filtered data and reduced data can be shown in a display for QC. All necessary data used for the survey can be controlled and changed online. Firstly, it is possible to start and stop logging of the data, events and messages. It is possible to log a manual event or just a comment. Furthermore, a new runline can be selected by means of the functions keys, clicking on the icons double clicking on the line. Also new guidance files for runlines, waypoints and routes can be selected. The following files can be generated On-line PDS2000 raw and processed data All data collected are saved in the raw data file. DTM file DTM file is used for progress of the survey and coverage Filled with values for min/max and average depth, number of depths per cell and standard deviation If data is filtered, DTM is filled with this filtered data. Data is corrected online for RTK height, tide (if tide is read via tide gauge), SV-profile, position XYZ file Corrected file used for 3D-view and TIN modelling Simrad Datagram file File used for multibeam data processing on external packages such as Neptune or Caris. XTF file File used for multibeam and SSS data processing on external packages such as Caris and Delphmap. Message file File with all messages, events and comments. Page 3

4 Multibeam Calibration Before a multibeam survey is carried out the mounting angles of the multibeam sensor relative to the grid of the vessel have to be determined. PDS2000 offers an automatic multibeam calibration module to find time delay, roll, pitch and yaw. Using minimum and a maximum value and a stepsize for each item, the differences between two lines are computed. The least squares residuals are indicated graphically showing the best fit solution. Besides the automatic operation it is also possible to check the determined mounting angles using profiles of the corrected data. After the calibration a report can be generated with all the determined values and pictures of the results. Data Evaluation and Editing Several editors are available for editing and validation of the survey data including but not limited to positioning data, echosounder, gyro and heave, pitch and roll. For the data files the following editors are available: Position editor Line based editor Time based editor Tide editor Sound velocity editor 3D swath editor All the data editors are available in one view, showing your changes directly on all editors. This is called synchronised processing. Once processed, the data can be modelled using a DTM (Matrix) model or a TIN model. The DTM can be edited in a DTM editor. The TIN can be viewed in the 3D viewer. Position Editor The position editor can be used to view and edit data from various position sources. Positions are be shown in a planview to get a general overview of the surveyed area. This planview has multiple layers to show different data from different sources and equipment simultaneously. The planview also has possibilities to show electronic charts such as DXF or C-Map hydrographic charts. Position can be edited, leaving the raw data untouched. To correct user errors made during the editing process, undo and redo functions are available. The status of the edited point, whether data is deleted, undeleted, moved or filtered is shown. The original (raw) data can be shown at any time. Page 4

5 Line Based Editor The line based editor shows your data relative to your sailed line. It is especially used for echosounder data and magnetometer data. It is easy to compare the data and eliminate spikes and errors. The original data is always shown. Using undo and delete and undelete functions, data can removed and retracted. Multibeam swath Editor The PDS2000 multibeam swath editor is a powerful swath editor which offers the user the facility to edit multibeam data fast and easy. The editor works completely synchrone with the other editors such as the position, time and line base editor. This means that when playing through the data, all data views will follow in time. So when the surveyor stops the play at a certain time he has an overview of all data at that particular time. In practise this means that when the data is incorrect due to e.q. a heave error this will be seen in the 3D display. At that moment the heave error can be corrected whereby the correction will be seen directly. The multibeam data editor comprises of a number of displays that can be set in different views. The views that can be selected are a 2D or 3D view. In the 2D view the data can be viewed from the front or from the side. In the 3D view the multibeam data can be shown relative, which means that a number of swaths are shown in sequence, or as a corrected 3D view. Corrections are for attitude, SVP, offsets and position. The result of this view is superior and is in fact a full 3D image of the surveyed object (see image on the left). The number of swaths one can select is user definable and only limited by the power of the PC system. Using a powerful PC (2.5 Ghz) over 5000 swaths (1.2 million data points) can be selected. In the 2D view it is possible to delete and undelete data manually. During data acquisition the surveyor can select and change filters in order to process/clean the data on-line. Even though the surveyor is doing his utmost to collect the best data online, it is practise that filters need to be adjusted or re-positioned during data processing. The swath editor offers the facility to move, change, add or delete filters as selected on-line. This way the effort of the on-line surveyor is used in the best way. Synchronised Processing With synchronised processing all the editors are shown in one view. Synchronised processing is a very powerful tool to validate your data. Changes to the data can be viewed immediately in all the other views. All possibilities of the editors are available. Page 5

6 DTM Editor The DTM filled online for progress of the survey can be edited and looked at in the DTM editor. The DTM is a grid model with square cells filled with data. Data available are mean value, standard deviation of the data in the cell, maximum value, minimum value and number of values. In the DTM editor the data can be edited, interpolated and filtered or deleted using a polygon or a single cell. Using the filter option it is possible to eliminate data using number of depths, standard deviation, mean value and minimum and maximum value. Of course it is possible to use the filter in an area defined by a polygon. An indicator is also available to show the data which are subject to the filter. Interpolation of the DTM can be carried out using a circular method or a directional method. The directional method uses a route as direction allowing rivers to be interpolated in an easy way. Data in one DTM can be updated or replaced by data from another DTM. It is also possible to fill a DTM with X, Y, Z data from a different source. One of the features of the DTM editor is the computation of volumes. Volumes can be computed relative to another DTM or to a fixed level. The polygon can be used to compute volumes in a certain area. Another option is to make a differential DTM of two DTM s or between a DTM and a fixed level. This is a feature that is common use in the dredging industry. A 3D model view is part of the DTM editor, the model is capable of viewing large amounts of data in short times.(320 MB models in less than 30 sec, depending on the hardware) 3D design models can be combined with the model in one view. Colour schemes are generated automatically or manually. A grid can be shown in the foreground as well as electronical charts. Annotation and colours can be shown at the same time allowing different information to be shown in different ways. For example show depth in colours and annotate the standard deviation. Profiles can be generated using a manually drawn line or runlines. More than one DTM can be shown in the profile view. With each DTM a report is generated showing the information about the DTM. TIN Model 3D-Visualisation The TIN model is a triangular model used to show a 3D visualisation of the area. The TIN model allows for a very quick way to look for irregularities in the area. Page 6

7 A 3D-model can be viewed, rotated and zoomed. Furthermore the scale of the vertical can be exaggerated and the colours can be changed. Colour schemes used for the DTM can also be used in the TIN model. The 3D-model can also use decimation to reduce the amount of data for easy use of and access to the data. Volume Computation PDS2000 has two different possibilities for volume computations: i) using the DTM Editor. ii) using the End Area volume computation method. Using the DTM editor the value of the DTM is compared with the value of the reference. The Z value can be checked against a fixed level or another DTM. Polygons can be used to compute a volume in a confined area. The DTM uses the size of each data cell times its Z-value to compute a volume. The end-area method is based on runlines. The depth in a guideline is checked against the reference. As reference a DTM theoretical model or other survey can be used. Using the distance to the other guidelines and the next datapoint at each depth point, the depth is compared with the reference model. This yields a 3D polygon from which a volume is computed. The total for each run line is accumulated into a line volume. HTML Reports Both computations generates a volume report in HTML style and can be displayed with Internet browser software. This allows fast distribution of reports over the internet. Presently the Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 is required for reading the reports. Using the internet browser, the report can be viewed and printed. The HTML file can be added to your reports. Reports can be made from tidal data stations explaining the tidal values used for your data reduction. The volume calculations can also be shown in HTML reports showing the total results of you calculation as well as the above and below value per line and a graph of the volumes. If a DTM-model or matrix is created a report is made. This report describes the files used to create the model, data added to the data and the operations carried out on the model e.g. interpolation and elimination of data. This means an easy QC of your DTM! Page 7

8 Plot Module The plot module is used for plotting charts and profiles. A template is used to plot the data. In this template the areas are defined where the planview will be shown, the key plans, profiles, legend etc. The number of areas is unlimited, also more areas of the same kind can be selected. Template makes it easy to have the same layout for all plots. For example planviews can show depths or standard deviations, contours, electronic charts, DXF-charts, grid coordinates and geographical co-ordinates. Depths and contours can be colour coded. The keyplan shows the full electronic chart and all the charts belonging to the project, the chart shown on the plot is indicated. Profile area s can show several profiles in one diagram, it can show data of selected DTM s and the theoretical profile, e.g. indicating changes during the survey, etc. Of course your company logo can be placed on the plot as well. The legend area has display options for a colour table a scale bar and descriptive explanation. The data is dragged and dropped to the template s areas. A full colour preview is shown on screen before plotting. PDS2000 plots to any plotter or printer that is supported by Windows. Dredge monitoring PDS2000 for Dredgers provides the functionality especially designed for the dredge operator to carry out his job more efficiently. The operator has an instant overview of the dredger with the top and side views displaying the vessel outline, boom, stick, cutterhead or suction tube in great detail. The flexible screen layout allows operators to adjust their screens to their needs. Multiple monitors with independent layouts are a standard feature of PDS2000. A grid-model is updated real-time registering the progress of the dredging work. It is immediately visible in the top and side views. The use of 3D-Design models allows definition of highly complex designs. The position of the dredge-head relative to the design is constantly monitored and displayed. Various layers are available to show for example the dredge track, dredge status, dredge progress, production model, differential models and depth models. Page 8

9 All recorded data can be processed and viewed using the standard PDS2000 processing tools. At present a number of excavator installations are integrated with hardware and PDS2000 software by Reson and are successfully in operation. Also a number of cutterdredgers installations are carried out. PDS2000 for Dredgers integrates seamlessly with other applications of PDS2000. Data can be easily exchanged between systems. PDS2000 offers with the dredge module an ALL-IN-ONE software package, with a consistence operator interface to cover all the needs of your project. Page 9

PDS2000 is a user-definable package. Not just for one application but for any hydrographic and dredge monitoring application you can think of. PDS2000 has all the guidance tools used for surveys: guidelines along and across a route for route surveys, parallel lines, grid lines, guidelines to way points. The helmsman display shows the position of the vessel relative to the guideline. PDS2000 provides Real time Data processing and 3D visualisation which gives you the end-results directly after your survey. PDS2000 uses Synchronized Processing to show the results of your editing.
