1 Bulliard, Jean Baptiste François ( ) Herbier de la France [Paris]: [s.n.], [ ] Comparative table of plates Bulliard s Herbier de la France was published in 150 fascicules of 4 plates each, 12 fascicules (i.e. 48 plates) constituting one année. Publication was interrupted by Bulliard s death, and two remaining plates were issued in 1798, bringing the total to 602. The Lindley Library has two sets of the Herbier in this format, neither containing plates Bulliard had intended, once the Herbier was completed, to reorganise the work in five parts, to which correspond the headings on the plates (Plante médicinale de la France, Plante vénéneuse de la France, etc.). Only two of these reorganised parts were completed: the Plantes vénéneuses, and the Champignons. These two are treated bibliographically as distinct works (Stafleu TL-2: 906/7, 908/9). The plates of the Herbier were re-used in them, but regrouped to match the text; the plates therefore do not appear in numerical sequence. The Lindley Library also contains a six-volume set whose spine labels identify it as Herbier de la France, but which contains the Plantes vénéneuses (1 vol.) and the Champignons (4 vols.), with the remaining illustrations bound in numerical sequence in a sixth volume. Most of the plates in this copy have been renumbered in pencil (frequently in the text as well as on the plates themselves) to indicate their order in the volumes. The following tables relate the plate numbers to the sequence of the plates within the reorganised edition. For the most part this list will apply to any copies of the separate publications of the Plantes vénéneuses and the Champignons; but there are instances where pairs of plates are grouped together to accompany a single text entry, and in these cases different copies may well have those pairs in a different sequence. Numbers in boldface have no number printed on the plate. In Champignons vol. II partie 2 (vol. V in this set), the number 68 was skipped in assigning pencil numbers to the plates. Names of plants are given as printed on the plates, without updating or orthographical amendment. The first table is organized according to the numbering system of the first set, i.e. the first volume comprising the Plantes vénéneuses, followed by four volumes of the Champignons. The second table is organized according to the numbering system of the second set, as shown in the right-hand column.
