2 Hungary BASIC FACTS AND DATA Capital: Budapest Inhabitants: Time zone: Central European Time (GMT+1) Official language: Hungarian Population: 10,044 million Foundation: 896 EU accession: 1st May 2004 (Schengen-zone member since December 2007) Hungary, located in the heart of Europe, is one of the oldest states in Central Europe. It has a population of 10,044 million in an area of 93,030 km 2. Budapest, the capital, is said to be one of the most beautiful European cities. Hungary is rich in thermal baths and spas, as well as cultural and natural resources, including numerous World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Biosphere reserves, the second largest thermal lake in the world (Hévíz) and the largest lake in Europe, Balaton, which makes the country an important tourist destination. Hungary is also famous for its hospitality and cuisine (it is worthwhile to taste the reputed pörkölt or gulyás and the delicious lángos.) Hungary is also reputed to host cultural events like Sziget Festival or Budapest Spring Festival. It is not only the famous Tokaj and Villányi wines or the succesful festivals that bring people here, but also the highly developed Hungarian education of the highest standard, which is also indicated by the number of its Nobel Prize laureates. VISA As Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area, citizens of EU and EEA Member States may enter the country without a visa. Family members of citizens of EEA Member States may also travel to Hungary without a visa if they are in possession of a residence card issued for family members of EEA citizens or a residence permit issued by any Schengen Member State. For that reason, visas and residence permits issued by one of the Schengen States are also valid in Hungary and visas issued by Hungarian representations abroad and residence permits issued by Hungarian national authorities are also valid in the entire Schengen Area. The Schengen visa and entry regulations are only applicable for a stay not exceeding 90 days. Rules for a long stay exceeding 90 days are laid down by the national laws and regulations of the member states respectively.

3 How to apply for visa? (Entry for short and long stay) Please contact: HEALTH CARE, INSURANCE First aid and emergency medical care is free for residents, while the rest you will have to pay for it. So students are advised to obtain insurance themselves either in their home country or in Hungary. For those whose home country has a bilateral agreement with Hungary on health care, medical examinations are free of charge. Some higher education institutions offer special insurance packages especially created for incoming international students. Visit the programme-specific pages for further information. HIGHER EDUCATION IN HUNGARY In Hungary, higher education institutions are the public and private/denominational universities (egyetemek) and colleges (fôiskolák) that are accredited and formally recognised by the state. The total number of students in the higher education system was in the previous academic year. Hungary has 71 operating higher education institutions today. In 2010 five research and five outstanding institutions have been selected as leading universities in Hungary. Since 2006, all students entering higher education in Hungary have been studying in a 3-cycle system that consists of courses leading to a Bachelor later on to a Master s degree and finally to a Ph.D. (doctoral) degree. The first level of higher education is the 6-8-semester Bachelor degree programmes (BA, BSc), which only offers qualification in a single discipline. The first cycle of education offers a Bachelor degree and provides professional skills and knowledge that can be utilised in the labour market, in addition to the theoretical foundation necessary for continuing studies in the given discipline in order to obtain a Master degree. Following the introduction of the tiered training system, some faculties (e.g. Medicine, Law, Dentistry, as well as a number of Arts Faculties) offer unified, semester programmes, which are completed with the acquisition of a Master degree. The Master degree programmes (MA, MSc) constitute the second level of higher education, offering Master level diplomas and professional qualifications. The exact conditions of application are defined by the higher education institutions. The duration of these programmes is 2-4 semesters (except for teacher training, which lasts for 5 semesters). Graduates can enter the labour market or apply to doctoral studies. Part of the higher education system is the non-university higher vocational training, which is incorporated in the system of the Bachelor programmes of the higher education institution, and provides a non-university higher vocational qualification. The third pilar of the 3-cycle system is the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), postgraduate academic degree awarded by universities. This three-year-long programme includes specialized professional courses and authentic research activity. The PdD programme leads to a PhD thesis which has to be defended by the PhD doctoral candidate so that the PhD award the first scientific degree can be achieved.

4 The Group of 11 The members of the group are the following Hungarian institutions: Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Corvinus University of Budapest, Eötvös Loránd University, Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Semmelweis University, Szent István University, University of Debrecen, University of Miskolc, University of Pannonia, University of Pécs, University of Szeged. 11 selected universities are the leading universities in Hungary which are dynamically implementing the cutting edge research achievements into the curricula of their educational programmes. All the fields of science are covered by The Group of 11. The national percentage of internationalization is the highest at these universities, this means the highest numbers of incoming and outgoing researchers, lecturers and students. This well organized international life ensures a multicultural atmosphere at every institution. The universities of the group have several agreements between each other and with other partner universities in Europe (and on every continent) this way providing uncountable number of joint (and double) degrees. Students studying at one of the universities of the group have the opportunity to take part in international projects and research. Apart of the academic co-operation, the universities of The Group of 11 give heed to the industrial partnerships and the training of the students on the real labour market by providing a colourful palette of internship opportunities. Research University title was awarded to the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Eötvös Loránd University, Semmelweis University, University of Debrecen and University of Szeged, while Corvinus University of Budapest, Szent István University, University of Miskolc, University of Pannonia and University of Pécs were recognised as Outstanding Universities. The title of Research University is to qualify the whole institution while the Outstanding University denotes the excellence of a speciality.

Its predecessor, the Reformed College of Debrecen, was founded in The UD was established in 2000 by (re)uniting several formerly independent institutions.
