Supporting Research Condoms are an effective method for preventing transmission of STDs, including HIV, and pregnancy when used correctly and consistently. 1 Making contraceptives, including condoms, available to youth does not promote sexual activity. 2, 3 Free condom distribution programs have resulted in increased condom use CDC (2011). Condom Fact Sheet In Brief. 2. Guttmacher et al. (1997). Am J Public Health 3. Blake, SM, et al. (2003). Am J of Public Health 4. CDC (2010). Condom Distribution as a Structural Level Intervention.
About CAP: Goals 1. Expand access to condoms in teen-friendly ways by addressing common barriers, such as: embarrassment, confidentiality concerns, cost, accessibility 2. 25 CAP Graphics Old New
Focus Group Feedback Conducted 3 focus groups in mailer counties Youth requested more information Add background about the purpose of CAP or a "for parents" section Participants requested specific types of condoms and some felt 10 condoms per mailer was not enough Participants would be most likely to access the website from a smartphone, not a desktop Creation of mobile App The term "pick-up" (as in, pick up free condoms here ) was confusing Some thought local sites were where you would go to pick up your order, not just a general place where youth could get condoms anytime The use of "score" wasn't popular-- sounds like a game or a gimmick Condoman received mixed feedback May want to add other images both male/ female or non-gendered
Teen Artwork inspired CAP Logo Inspired by a teen illustration from CFHC s 2002 condom art cover contest Designers helped us make changes to the design to create logos

6. CAP Evaluation
About CAP: Goals 1. Expand access to condoms in teen-friendly ways by addressing common barriers, such as: embarrassment, confidentiality concerns, cost, accessibility 2. Increase condom use among youth participating in CAP 3. Promote normalization of condom use among sexually active teens Target population: 15 to 19 year olds in CA *Available to teens years old

CAP Evaluation Strategy: Teen Users 3 teen user surveys: Can we contact you via ? 1. Home mailer users n=437 or 15% users to date 2. Map users Unknown 3. At the Condom Access Sites Unknown Example questions: Before you were able to get free condoms by mail, where did you usually get them when you needed them? I didn t have a usual place to get condoms At a clinic or health center I bought them I got them from friends or family I was having sex, but I didn t use them I wasn t having sex Other: Have you already picked up condoms at a place listed on the CAP map? Yes No Unsure (If No) Why haven t you gone to one of the places on the CAP map to pick up free condoms? I don t need condoms right now I couldn t get there I don t like any of the places listed I haven t made the time to go yet Other:
CAP Evaluation: Other Data Biannual condom access site survey Process oriented, example: How do you feel the project is going at your site so far? Do you have a sufficient supply of materials? Other feedback for us? Qualitative interviews with site coordinators Website user demographics Other possibilities: Intercept surveys school based sites County STD and teen birth rate data
Evaluation Q&A Concerned about Creating barrier for teens by asking too many questions Holding CAS partners accountable to program goals without creating barriers for their participation Challenge Assessing the projects impact on condom use Designing an evaluation with a reasonable chance of a good response rate Balancing the benefit of asking teens evaluation questions while they are on the website with wanting to ask questions that can only be asked in a followup survey (e.g. Did you visit one of the sites on the map?) Have you designed an evaluation for a project like this? What did you do?
7. Southern CA Partnerships
Help wanted! If you know of organizations that may want to partner with us in any of the counties in blue, please contact us! Also let us know about organizations in any county that already provide free condoms to teens and may want to be listed on the condom access site map!
Thank you! Claire Feldman, MPH (510) x2328 Laura Douglas, MPH (510)
Challenges Start up challenges: Anticipating demand for individual mailers and condoms at the condom access sites Logistics: packing, mailing, ordering cases monthly, etc. Technology bugs getting the backend of the website up and running Ongoing challenges: Identifying condom access sites in some local health jurisdictions Making the technology/website work for us what else can it tell us? Evaluation: gathering useful evaluation information without creating a barrier for users or condom access sites This is a political topic some anxiety around preparing ourselves for and dealing with the media response
