1 DSC Notice: 20/2001* Date of Issue: June 2001 NHS Information Standards Board Subject: Data Standards: NHS Plan: Booking Systems Implementation Date: 01 December 2001 DATA SET CHANGE CONTROL PROCEDURE This paper gives notification of changes to be included in the NHS Data Dictionary & Manual and the NHS CDS Manual as appropriate. These will be consolidated into the publications in due course. Summary of change: OUT-PATIENT DATE Change Proposal Reference No: CP 16/01 The NHS Information Standards Board (NHS ISB), established by the NHS Information Authority, is responsible for approving information standards. The NHS ISB is supported by the Management Information Standards Board, the Clinical Information Standards Board and the Technical Standards Board. *The DSCN Number Format has been changed to denote the new arrangements as follows: sequence number/year of issue. The service identifier and service sequence number are redundant owing to changes in practice and have been removed. The packaging of standards documentation is under review. 2 DATA SET CHANGE NOTICE 20/2001 Reference: CP16/01 - DG872/02/01 (v 1.9) Subject: Type of Change: NHS Plan: Booking Systems Revision of NHS data standards Effective Date: 01 December 2001 Reason for Change: Integration of the data requirement into the NHS Data Dictionary to support the NHS Plan booking systems Background: The NHS Plan signalled the Government s intention to introduce booking systems giving all patients a choice of a convenient time within a guaranteed maximum waiting time. By the end of 2005 all patients will be able to book their appointments and hospital admission dates. An interim partial booking system has been piloted at a number of hospitals and these systems will be introduced in hospitals that are unable to move directly to full patient booking. NHS data standards have been changed to support the new booking processes. Summary of change: OUT-PATIENT DATE Page 2 of 5

4 This is a request for a health care service to be provided for a PATIENT. If there is a verbal request this will would normally be confirmed by a written request, and these should be processed as one referral. An electronic message is treated as a written referral. Where the relates to a booking system the patient is given the choice of when to attend. For full booking the patient is offered a date within one working day of the referral or decision to admit. The attributes are unchanged Each may be associated with one or more OUT-PATIENT ES The remaining relationships are unchanged A classification of the type of booking system used for the PATIENT s admission. In any booked system (partial or full) the patient is given the choice of when to attend. In a partial booking system the patient is given an indication of how long the wait will be and is contacted by the HEALTH CARE PROVIDER at some point after the decision to admit to be given a choice of dates for the admission. In a full booking system the patient should be given the opportunity to book an admission date within one working day of the decision to admit. a. No patient choice of dates offered for admission b.
