Donnelly) 19 Landa Nanography Indirect transfer of ink via blanket to the substrate up to eight colors, spot and specialty colors pigment particles only tens of nanometers in size water evaporates on the blanket and the ink becomes an ultra-thin dry polymeric film, less than half the thickness of offset images.. image is transferred to any kind of ordinary paper, coated or uncoated, or onto any plastic packaging film - without requiring pre-treatment. 17 Technology Demo Xeikon Trillium New liquid image development system based on High Viscosity Toner (HVT): This is an emulsion of toner and carrierliquid (pharmaceutical grade white oil) to allow the toner particles to be up to 4 times smaller compared to its dry form. Different from the Indigo process: The carrier liquid is recycled in the printing process without evaporation, so no VOCs involved toner particles are not charged during manufacturing, but just before printing Trillium will incorporate both a transfer and fuse process. Sustainability: Perfectly deinkable. It uses the same resin types as Xeikon s dry toners, bioresins and vegetable oil can be used. Photo Océ Some Observations and Comments Commercial digital printing (toner as well as inkjet based) is no more a niche market Print quality and paper latitude of toner based printing still leading, toner based printing is improving cost per page There are signals of another toner printing renaissance, this time using smaller toner particles (with liquid carrier) Inkjet based web printing becoming established; few vendors are already established in the market; still substrate limitations are existing Inkjet is dominant in wide format printing Inks are mostly pigmented and water based; UV leads label printing Debates on relative eco-friendliness of different technologies now include deinking.
