Our What Approach Do what it takes to get it done Long time horizon-take small steps Although each job or contract has a hard goal, we try to we try to weave in as many soft goals as possible/value added Work ourselves out of a job
Our How Approach We try to partner and collaborate as much as possible Building capacity Training as part of a project Liaison/agent for Community Working with our vision in mind each project is step towards our vision
Who are our Partners Within AEA-strong teams provide support Funders- steady funding and support allows long term objectives, working to fulfil our mission, flexability. People- in communities, homes, businesses and government
Partnerships & Collaboration Most of our activities occur in collaboration with various partners: GNWT CMHC City of YK Aurora College CanNor Contractors Community Governments NWTAC NWTHC NRCan INAC Schools NTPC Inspectors Individuals
Our Approach to Partnering How do we pick our partners? Real partnerships require real involvement i.e. not just optics: $$, in kind contributions, local knowledge, materials, equipment, translation Not silent partners active partners
Capacity and Credibility 1 st & foremost we are educators We provide workshops and information sessions at schools, energy fairs, night classes, coffee shops We host workshops on building science, ventilation, WETT, solar We take the courses we offer and work beside people as a team in their community
Communications We interpret and present technical information accurately and in plain language We are a trusted independent source of energy information and advice we are not selling products Translation and Interpretation to some of NWT official languages
Community Energy Planning & Community Energy Profiles
Community Energy Planning o Stated Energy Goal(s) o Strategies and Actions to get to the goal o Review, Evaluation and Next Steps

Community Energy Profiles
Community Energy Plans City of Yellowknife oreduce energy use and GHG emissions by 20% over 10 years oinform and educate public on climate change and energy issues. ocreate a "revolving" fund to finance green energy projects.
Community Energy Plans City of Yellowknife oestablish and apply guiding principles for environmentally sustainable communities. oensure high energy efficiency standards in building design and technologies through building permit standards. oencourage use of existing renewable energy designs and technologies and develop new sources of renewable energy.
Community Energy Plans Lessons Learned: o Community Energy Planning is the foundation for all AEA projects and activities o Community Energy Profiles are integral to the energy planning process o Complex data can be understood Visual plain language o Interpretation may be required o Inclusive process (don t exclude anyone)
Wood Stove Project(s) A good fit that came from AEA mission & CEPs reducing costs & pollution Enhancing local economy & building capacity familiar equipment but new technology & rules
COMPARE OLD WITH NEW: Overall Efficiency 40 50% 60 80%
The Renewable Cycle
Burn It Smart
The WETT Barrier New Insurance regulations required WETT inspected installs 2008 WETT training organized by city of YK to train inspectors and opened to others WETT in HR

Local Capacity in Fort Simpson
2013 Next Generation WETT training in Fort Simpson & Behchoko Homeowners provide all hardware Free installation and WETT certification
Making a Hearth Pad
Where are we now? Sahtu and Tlicho government have conducted very successful wood stove projects on their own using their WETT trained students and a certified mentor to install additional stoves in their respective communities with no involvement of AEA.
Community Government Building Retrofits NWT Association of Communities partnered with AEA to conduct retrofits on community government buildings Selected communities to work with based on expression of interest Performed energy audits of buildings Based on results of building energy audits moved on to assist with retrofits
Community Gov t Building Retrofits We ve worked with 8 Communities so far: Deline Fort Providence Kakisa Lutselke Sachs Harbor Ulukhaktok Wekweti Whati This year we re working with: Fort Good Hope Jean Marie River Tsiighetchic

Keys and Ladders Lessons Learned and Success Factors for Projects in NWT Communities Part II Project Management Conference Nov
What is Monitoring? To be aware of the state of a system Observe and check the progress or quality of something over a period of time; keep under systematic review To actually know what is going on with a system You can t manage what you don t measure!
What is the purpose of monitoring? How are our buildings and houses performing? Are they performing as intended? How are occupants interacting with the building?
What is the purpose of monitoring? How do certain technologies work in the North? As a commissioning tool For future designs, builds, maintenance, occupants: What do we need to keep? What do we need to change? Are all the technologies appropriate for the North
Northern Sustainable House AEA partnered with CMHC & NWTHC to measure the energy use of the NSH and compare to a similar house of earlier construction. Interview occupants on a regular basis to uncover any problems they were having with the house Inform and educate the public

Solar Air Heating Solar preheat ventilation air, Aurora Research Institute, Inuvik, NT Monitoring shows preheat production 28GJ/year, equivalent of $1150 in fuel savings Typical winter day energy production
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Inverter monitoring External monitoring Comparing different tracking systems Comparing locations and orientations Online public access
Fuel Monitoring (Bill Tracking) Sustainable House Conventional House
Challenges Equipment Internet interruptions stop the flow of data to dash board Dirty power plays havoc with electronics Power interruptions play havoc with data collection- restarts
Electric Domestic Hot Water (DHW) Heater Replacement Project Replaced electric hot water tanks with oil or propane fired water heaters in homes in communities with diesel electricity generators (thermal communities)
Electric DHW Replacement Electric water heaters were identified as a very high cost for homes in thermal (diesel) communities DHW can be up to half of household electricity usage GNWT subsidizes electricity through the TPSP to reduce cost of living
Electric DHW Replacement $200 $150 $100 $50 $35 Cost per GJ of Energy $83 $172 $0 $1.07/litre $0.30/kWh elec $0.62/kWh elec
Electric DHW Replacement Diesel Generator and Electric Water Tank 70% 30% Useful Energy Waste Heat Oil Fired Water Heater 20% 80%
Electric DHW Replacement 2.5 year project Replaced ~50 water heaters in 6 Communities: Fort Providence Fort Simpson Deline Fort Good Norman Wells Tulita
Electric DHW Replacement Solicited Communities with interest in Partnering with AEA on this project Based on Community recommendation hired a community liaison as bridge between AEAhomeowners-contractors Community - advertised and promoted project and provided list of potential recipients to AEA
Electric DHW Replacement ERS evaluation to assess home for suitability Space in mech room, co vent with furnace etc. Hired an Engineering firm to produce Standard Detail Drawings Tried to incorporate best practices RFQ for contractors to install heaters Post installation inspection to ensure compliance with applicable codes
Electric DHW Replacement
Electric DHW Replacement Logistically challenging Took longer and cost more than planned Homeowner initially saved less than expected due to changes in utility costs GNWT saved less than expected on TPSP due to change in electricity rates Still resulted in fuel savings and lower costs for homeowners and GNWT Monitoring in progress to track savings
