20 Postgraduate research... Information for Postgraduate Research Applicants In this rapidly changing world, a Postgradauate research course can be used to serve many different needs and give you that extra edge that today s employers are looking for. Whatever your own academic or professional goals, Bangor University s long tradition of academic excellence will help to get you there. MPhil/PhD study A PhD usually takes 3 years to complete on a full-time basis and 4-5 years if studied as a part-time programme. To obtain a PhD you are expected to conduct independent research that will make an original contribution to knowledge about that particular subject and present this in the form of a thesis. A MPhil will usually take 2 years to complete on a full-time programme and 3-5 years as a part-time programme. Research at MPhil level should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality are less than that for a PhD. MRes The Research Masters degree is more researchorientated than a normal taught Masters programme, usually consisting of 120 credits research and 60 credits taught (66% / 34%). It is seen to be a good route into PhD level study. Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum of academic disciplines engaging in research at national and international levels. The University provides strong support for research activities including encouraging links with commercial and industrial bodies in the UK and overseas. You can view a full list of research opportunities by subject area at: researchpages Applying for a PhD or MPhil If you are applying for a PhD /MPhil you need to have a good idea of the specific area or theme that you want to research. Before applying check the specialist area you wish to study is covered by a member of staff at Bangor by looking at our staff web pages at: specialisms This will provide you with a breakdown of each staff members area of academic focus. Once you have found a member of staff whose research interests broadly match you own, you should contact them directly with a concise research brief that outlines your proposal and ask whether he/she would consider supervising your project. If the academic expresses his/her interest, you may then further discuss your ideas and develop a full PhD/MPhil research proposal. At this stage, you should formally apply for the PhD/MPhil programme using the form available at You should fill the form out thoroughly, including academic references, your research proposal and the name of the academic member of staff under whose supervision you intend the research to be conducted. Writing a good research proposal The purpose of your proposal is to show that you have a relevant theme, a viable project and the competence to carry it out. The information is vital when we evaluate your proposed study and decide if we have the right staff expertise to supervise you. The format and length of the proposal is likely to vary according to the type of project. Typically a proposal is no less than 1500 words (3-4 pages) long and will cover the following points. Title This should be concise and descriptive. Background You should explain the context for your research, the issues it is concerned with, and the reasons why the research is important and original. You may need to describe how it builds on your previous academic work or professional experience. You must include references to the existing research and scholarly literature in your field of research. Statement of the problem or research questions. Clearly formulate the problem you propose to research. This should be expressed as an answerable question, or set of questions. The problem should be substantial but manageable within the timescale of a research degree and it should have originality. Design of the project Describe how the project will be structured and where it will take place. Key design decisions (say between experimental, comparative, longitudinal or case study approaches) should be justified according the way in which you have defined the research problem. If your project will be testing hypotheses you should state them here. Methodology In this section describe your approach to collecting and analysing data. A proposal may plan to use existing data, gather primary data or do both. Explain the procedures and techniques you plan to use; the nature of the data; the methods of data sampling and collection; sources of information. Here you will demonstrate your knowledge of alternative social scientific methods and make the case that your approach is the most suitable for your research question. Consider questions of access to data sources and the skills that you will need to carry out the research. Resources and ethical clearance Will your research comply with the agreed international standards for good practice in social research? Using published ethical guidelines show that you are aware of the specific documents and clearances you will need. Project management You should map out a schedule for your project, from the start date onwards, showing when you expect to conduct periods of fieldwork (if applicable) and the time required for data analysis and writing up your results. References You should include a list of the references cited in your proposal, using Harvard notation. This will be useful for potential supervisors to evaluate your knowledge of the research topic.
