Overdraft Control Helping you avoid unarranged overdrafts Helpful banking
Overdraft Control is a service only available on the Select Account and is designed to help you avoid unarranged overdrafts on your account.
How does Overdraft Control work? If you register for our free Overdraft Control service we will reject the following payments if paying them would create or increase an unarranged overdraft on your account: Direct Debits and standing orders BACS and CHAPS payments Cheques Future dated payments arranged via telephone or online banking. Please note, registering for Overdraft Control means that important payments (e.g. your mortgage, rent or utility bills) may not be paid if you don t have enough money in your account. The Debit card issued with Overdraft Control also prevents all offline payments (e.g. contactless payments or payments on a plane) regardless of your account balance. Existing customers without this card will be sent a replacement Debit card. If we reject a payment we will not charge you an Unpaid Transaction Fee (usually 6 per payment rejected up to a maximum of 60 per monthly charging period). Payments Overdraft Control cannot prevent Although Overdraft Control makes unarranged overdrafts less likely, it cannot prevent unarranged overdrafts altogether as there are some transactions, such as the following, we will continue to pay: Payments using your Debit card where the retailer does not check with us that you have enough money in your account before accepting the payment. Any NatWest fees or arranged overdraft interest due on your account. If you register for Overdraft Control, we will continue to charge Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fees ( 6 per day), however we will increase your buffer from 10 to 25. This means that if we process a payment that creates or increases an unarranged overdraft on your account, an Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fee will only be charged if that unarranged overdraft exceeds 25 at close of business on that day. Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fees are capped at 90 (15 fees) per monthly charging period. 3
Why is Overdraft Control a good idea? If you don t have Overdraft Control and there is a payment due on your account (e.g. a Direct Debit) that would create or increase an unarranged overdraft on your account, we will decide in our discretion (taking into account your financial circumstances) whether or not to make the payment. If we agree to make the payment and you go into an unarranged overdraft, you will normally have to pay an Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fee of 6 for each day there is an unarranged overdraft of greater than 10 on your account. If we reject the payment, you will normally have to pay an Unpaid Transaction Fee of 6, charged for each transaction we reject (maximum 10 fees per monthly charging period). For full details of these fees, please refer to NatWest Personal & Private Current Account Terms and Personal & Private Current Account Fees & Interest Rates. Please consider these points before registering for Overdraft Control If you have Overdraft Control, we will reject payments even if they were to create an unarranged overdraft on your account of only This could mean that important payments (e.g. your mortgage, rent or utility bills) may not be paid. This could lead to your service being disrupted or the service provider applying fees for not receiving their payments. We may cancel any standing order or Direct Debit on your account if it is rejected on more than one occasion and we reasonably consider that the cleared balance (plus any unused arranged overdraft facility) on your account is unlikely to be sufficient to meet future payments. 4
How to register for Overdraft Control Overdraft Control is only available on our Select Account. You can register at your local branch or by calling us on Customers with hearing and speech impairments can contact us by Minicom on Lines are open Monday Friday 8am-8pm, Saturday 9am-6pm, closed on Sundays and bank holidays. Calls may be recorded. If you register before 6pm on a business day, Overdraft Control will take effect on the next business day. You can register for Overdraft Control even if you have an arranged overdraft on your account. Any payments you have instructed us to make from your account that have yet to be paid may be affected by you registering for Overdraft Control. Please consider whether you have any outstanding payments when registering for this service as once you register for Overdraft Control certain payments may not be made. 5
How to cancel Overdraft Control You can cancel Overdraft Control at your local branch, or by contacting us on (Minicom ). If you cancel Overdraft Control before 6pm on a business day, the cancellation will take effect on the next business day. Please consider whether you have any upcoming payments when you cancel Overdraft Control, as once Overdraft Control is cancelled we will decide in our discretion whether or not to process these payments. Glossary An arranged overdraft is a limit on your current account that is agreed in advance between you and the bank and allows you to keep spending up to this agreed limit. A business day is a day on which banks in the United Kingdom are generally open for business, other than weekends and local bank holidays. Some services can be used on non-business days but transactions carried out on these days will be treated as being carried out on the next business day. Overdraft fees are charged according to your monthly charging period not calendar month. Your charging period runs from month to month, usually from the date you opened your account. For example, if you opened your account on 15 August, your charging period will run from the 15th of each month to the 14th of the next month. You can find out your charging period by contacting us. If your account becomes overdrawn without prior arrangement with us, or you exceed your arranged overdraft limit; this is called an unarranged overdraft. 6
