SELC has staff with many years examining experience for the major international English language tests. SELC students consistently achieve excellent scores in the IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge tests. Teacher profiles Hi, I m Hilary and I ve been working at SELC since 1995! Before joining SELC I spent several years teaching and studying in Japan, and I ve also learned French and recently started studying Spanish, so I understand how difficult it can be for language learners sometimes. I ve taught on all the different programs that we offer at SELC. I m also an Oral Examiner for the Cambridge Speaking Exams, which means that I can give students useful advice for the exam! I m now Head Teacher at SELC, so I get to meet all the students and help new students to settle in. It also means that I liaise with all the teachers and other staff to make sure that things run smoothly and that students and teachers are happy. This gives me lots of variety in my job, and that s great!

Teachers Students Minimum age for all courses: 16 European Asian We are committed to excellence in teaching What makes us really special is the caring and personalised attention teachers give students, both in and out of the classroom. You will receive quality instruction from our team of teachers who are: 40-45% 35-45% South American 10-20% Other 10% University graduates Certified second language instructors Experienced Dynamic and interesting Friendly and helpful Student profiles Daniel (Danny) Shaw Cambridge, IELTS and General English teacher I started teaching 10 years ago in Sydney. I went travelling to Europe and taught for a year in London, then I went to Spain and spent three years in Barcelona and Bilbao. While I was there I took Spanish lessons, so I know how it feels to be a stranger in a foreign country and to struggle with the language. I think during my career I have taught every single type of class there is General and Business English, EAP, Cambridge, IELTS and TOEIC, to all levels! My favourite is Cambridge because I like teaching students who are motivated and keen to learn, and also because we become a little family for twelve weeks; we work hard and play harder! I love living in Sydney because it s a vibrant, exciting place with plenty to do in the evenings and at weekends, and of course there are lots of beaches nearby to enjoy! SELC has great facilities and is so close to the beach. I made some great friends from many countries. I loved the teachers; they really helped me improve my English. Studying at SELC was a fantastic experience. 7

C General LCSELC English The General English course teaches students everyday English, with a focus on listening and speaking. You will cover all the skills necessary to improve your English level. When I first arrived in Australia my English level was quite low. I had learned English at high school but still couldn t speak very well. The General English course helped me to gain confidence and improved my ability in everyday communication. From this course I learned useful communication skills to help me improve enough to join Cambridge Preparation - and I had a lot of fun on the way.

Who is the course for? General English is the best choice if you want to be able to use English better in a variety of situations. While all skills are taught, General English emphasises speaking and listening and includes a wide range of functional English to help you feel at ease in any situation. You will start to feel more at home in the English-speaking world right from the beginning. Students do a progress test every term to measure their improvement. 10 C General English Electives LCSELC Every Wednesday students in the General English course (Intermediate and above) do a full-day elective course. This gives you a change of learning environment and allows you to direct your studies toward your own specific interests or goals. I really enjoyed the range and quality of the SELC elective courses I took during my General English course. I was able to learn English in an interesting and focused way and made friends and met teachers from other classes. I think it s a great idea to have a full-day elective course each Wednesday and there s enough variety to choose a different one every new term.

Electives are chosen at the beginning of each term You can choose to focus on test preparation, on improving your listening and speaking or grammar and writing, or take fun cultural courses which enable you to explore more of Sydney. We also offer specialised courses like Movie-making and Work Skills. Our electives are offered on a rotating basis. Level Intermediate and above 5. Work skills This elective gives you the skills you need in order to have success in finding, applying for and getting a job during or after study at SELC. This includes helping you to use the correct English for your resumé and application for employment as well as the speaking and listening skills needed for your job interview. 1. Listening and speaking Forget the textbooks! In this elective you will learn the sort of English native speakers use in everyday situations. The lessons are fun and include movie studies, pronunciation practice, role-plays, study of idioms, talking to native speakers, and lots of discussion and informal chats. It is a great way to improve your listening and casual conversation skills. 2. Grammar and writing Choose Grammar and Writing to consolidate your knowledge of English. In this elective we focus on making your English more accurate, so that you feel more confident both when you speak and when you write. 3. TOEIC / TOEFL preparation For students who wish to develop the skills and strategies needed to do well in both tests: Simulated test practice Vocabulary extension Reading skills Speed reading skills Test-specific grammar review Computer-based test practice Error correction tasks Idiomatic language 4. Australian studies This elective gives you a chance to experience Australian culture as you learn English. It combines lessons with trips to the most interesting spots around and beyond Sydney. You learn about Aboriginal society, see Australia s incredible animals, and visit interesting places that many tourists don t find! 6. Movie-making This exciting and innovative elective is a fun way to develop and practise your English skills by researching a chosen landmark or area in beautiful Sydney, then scripting, filming and editing a documentary-style short travel film with your small group. You will produce your own film using the latest imovie technology and take home a DVD as a reminder of part of your Australian experience. SELC is an official TOEIC Test Centre. SELC students who wish to sit the TOEIC test can apply directly at SELC. The tests are held every 2 months, with dates displayed on our Academic Counselling notice board. 11
