MS in Energy Studies The Master of Energy Studies program is planned to consolidate and build on AUB s excellent research and professional profile addressing current and future energy research needs of the region in areas such as energy science and technology, economics, public policy, and energy management. The program s educational goals are: 1. To promote an interdisciplinary approach to understand and evaluate various modes of energy supply and end-use efficiency of energy systems within the context of sustainability and development in the region. 2. To develop effective collaboration skills among students from different disciplines including energy science and technology, economics, and public policy. On successful completion of this interdisciplinary course of study, students will: 1) Be able to evaluate different sources of energy related to energy extraction, conversion, and utilization for both traditional systems and sustainable/renewable energy alternatives. 2) Apply methods of economic analysis, risk and decision analysis, environmental impact assessment, and policy techniques for performing energy planning and reaching and decision making while addressing sustainability in supply and demand. 3) Understand advances in selected energy technologies, products and energy end-use efficiency and their impact on market economy, and development activities. Admission requirements to the program will follow AUB Graduate Studies Policies. Bachelor degree holders from relevant fields study are eligible to apply for admission into the Energy Studies Master s program. Remedial courses may be needed for students as would be recommended by the Program. Native English speakers and graduates of universities in which the language of instruction is English may be exempt from TOEFL. Students should have a GPA of at least 80 or 3.0 and good recommendations to be considered for regular admission into the Energy Studies Master s program. Students with GPA above 75 and below 80 are considered for admission on probation. Degree Requirements: The program permits full-time or part-time enrollments. To obtain a Master s degree in energy studies, the student must complete a minimum of 24 credits of graduate course work, 6 credits of interdisciplinary thesis work on energy-related field, and a zero-credit seminar. The course work is distributed as follows: - 9 credits of required core courses. - 3 to 6 credits of elective course from List A on energy resources, economics and policy. - 6 to 9 credits elective course from List B on energy science and technology. - 3 credits elective course as approved by thesis advisor/s if the elective is not from List A or B. - 0 credit seminar.

17 Master of Public Policy and International Affairs Division of University Interdisciplinary Programs (DUIP) شعبة برامج الجامعة للتخصصات المتداخلة ا The DUIP supports University interdisciplinary programs involving multiple departments or disciplines in two or more faculties. Master of Public Policy and International Affairs Program Goals Students who earn a master s degree in public policy and international affairs will be able to participate in and analyze the policy process in the Arab region within the global context. Students will also be able to raise awareness about public policy and international problems; assess the quantity and quality of policy relevant data and theories; advance the capacity, accountability, and responsiveness of public actors; and promote sound public policies that are informed by evidence. Program Objectives The objective of this program is to enable students to: (Comprehension) explain fundamental theories and processes of public policy and international affairs; (Application) apply techniques and methodologies in public and international policy research; (Analysis) critically analyze key policy and international affairs issues; (Communication) demonstrate oral and written communication skills in public and international policy arenas; (Synthesis) formulate domestic and international public policy alternatives and arguments; (Evaluation) critically appraise the validity and limitations of domestic and international public policy theories and arguments. Swift Exposure: students must be exposed to cutting day issues of public policy and international affairs. stsoaaoima RisnoiisimdA Applicants with backgrounds from most fields of study are eligible to apply for admission into the program. Students should have a GPA of at least 3.0 or 80, but, the given the competitive nature of the admissions process, a GPA of 3.0 does not guarantee admission. A strong academic record in relevant fields, reference letters, a letter of intent, and a thoughtful personal statement will all be evaluated closely for entry into the program. Moreover, a minimum of one-year work experience is strongly recommended, and more is encouraged. It should further be noted that the MPPIA program seeks to foster a diverse group of students who come from different professional/social backgrounds and disciplines, and will take this under consideration (where relevant) when reviewing applicants files. Two to three pre-requisites (such as introductory classes in public administration, political science and economics) will be required for applicants who have a technical or natural scientific background, and thus have little or no relevant coursework in fields related to public policy and/or international affairs. However, the requirement for prerequisites, particularly for more experienced applicants, may be waived at the discretion of the MPPIA Admissions Committee. Language requirements: As the location of AUB, in the heart of the Middle East, is an added value to the program, it is necessary for students to have intermediate knowledge of the Arabic language. The ability to converse, read, and write in Arabic is crucial in gaining understanding of the Arab region. Students will be tested on their Arabic level upon admission, and, if

18 not native speakers or fluent, they will be required to take Arabic classes available at the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages. PPIA Proposed DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The program permits part time and full-time enrollments. Students of the MPPIA Program must complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate course work and 6 credits of interdisciplinary thesis work (or internship and final year project in the non-thesis track). There is also the option of providing a 3-week intensive course (0 credits) on Economic methods prior to the start of the Fall semester for those applicants lacking this background. The course work is distributed as follows: - 18 credits of required core courses - 12 credits of elective course - 6 credits of mini-courses/seminars on policy-making and international affairs related to the Arab World. Credits Summary - Required core courses 18 cr. - Seminars/mini-courses 6 cr. - Elective Courses 12 cr. - Thesis or (Internship/Project + Elective) 6 cr. 20 The Scholars in HeAlth Research Program is a novel post-graduate program, issued jointly by FM and FHS, designed to prepare the human capital needed to conduct research in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), and especially focusing on those that are most relevant to Lebanon and other countries in the region. The Program spans from short, to medium, and long term training. The SHARP Summer Certificate Program provides graduates with a rich curriculum in quantitative research methods and provides the required foundations to pursue a career in clinical and translational health research, focusing on Non-Communicable Diseases. NCDs are the leading causes of death in the world, and in the Middle East, in particular, and include diabetes, hypertension, asthma, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and cancers. This 7 weeks 12 credits summer certificate program expands the breadth and depth of research skills of postgraduate trainees, and provides essential quantitative skills in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Research Ethics, Library Science-Informatics, with hands-on application modules in analysis and reporting of large datasets. It can be taken as a stand- alone program, but can also count towards the initial mandatory curriculum requirements towards established master s degrees at FHS, FAFS, HSON, or towards the novel SHARP MS degree, that will launch Fall This 40-credit master s degree, solidifies the foundations acquired in the certificate program with additional courses in special topics in biostatistics, clinical trials, health policy, leadership and management, epidemiology of NCDs, and also includes seminar series and a 6 credits thesis. SHARP is open to postgraduate students from all faculties at AUB, as well as to external postgraduate applicants, most notably those with interest in health research. It provides researchers with the essential tools to conduct patient-oriented and population-oriented studies on NCDs, and equip them with management and leadership skills needed to become change agents and lead research groups, in academic departments, government health agencies, or other relevant health care settings. For full details on SHARP and summer courses and Master Degree curriculum, admission criteria, and application, visit SHARP webpage and/or visit us at the Graduate Studies Fair, November 28th, West Hall, Faculty of Medicine Booth, to hear more and interact with SHARP summer 2013 graduates!
