1 CTSOs and CTE answering the Skills Gap Historical Information on Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) formation and purpose Since President Woodrow Wilson first signed the national vocational education act, the Smith-Hughes Act in 1917, the federal government has stood fast by its foundational philosophy that U.S. education must create for young people a direct linkage to learning and its application to the workforce. Career and technical student organizations (CTSOs) are regarded as an integral part of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and are considered fundamental in ensuring that academic knowledge and soft skills learned by students are applied to real life situations. CTSOs play an important part in preparing young people to become productive citizens and to assume roles of leadership in their communities. As a CTSO, SkillsUSA provides a unique program of career and leadership development, motivation and recognition for secondary and college/postsecondary students. SkillsUSA advisors provide organized curriculumoriented activities that help students gain career, leadership, and personal skills that maximize employability and the ability to become productive citizens in the workforce, home and community. Some 14 million students are enrolled in CTE encompassing every state, with programs in nearly 1,300 public high schools and 1,700 two-year-colleges. 2 Industry Facts According to recent surveys of hiring trends, more than 33 percent of employers have unfilled job openings because they can t find applicants with the skills necessary for the jobs. These are good-paying jobs, too. A report by Harvard Business School found that 27 percent of trained skilled professionals earn more than the average bachelor s degree recipient The average skilled worker is 56 years old. By 2030, 79 million people will have retired while only 41 million new workers will enter the workforce 600,000: Current number of high skilled manufacturing jobs that will remain unfilled due to a lack of skilled labor.
