Teaching Biography Currently I teach at Vision West Notts as a tutor delivering initial teacher education programmes. The courses I deliver on are the University of Derby G/DTLLS programme and the City and Guilds CTLLS course. My work is varied and sees me delivering to a diverse group of learners in a variety of locations, including employer premises which requires me to use a wide range of teaching techniques and strategies. My teaching career has seen me work in a number of different settings including primary and secondary schools and colleges of further education and take on a number of different roles. Even though my block placement as part of my PGCE studies was undertaken in an FE college (City of Westminster College), my first employment in a teaching role was as a teacher of Business in an secondary school in Reading (Little Heath School). Spending two years in this role, I took on responsibility in my second year of teaching for GNVQ Leisure and Tourism courses in the school. This involved developing the courses from scratch and designing schemes of work and lesson plans for the whole team involved in delivery. Due to relocation back to the East Midlands I next spent a year working in a secondary school in Nottinghamshire (Kimberley School) as a teacher of vocational education. I delivered ICT to younger learners (years 7-9) and business, ICT and leisure and tourism at GCSE and AVCE standard. During this period I became involved in the development of enterprise education working on a number of county wide projects with colleagues from other schools. I also had an article published in "Teaching Business and Economics" the journal of the Economics, Business and Enterprise Education Association (EBEA) about my experiences of working on enterprise programmes and a project I worked on in Sweden as part of a teacher exchange programme. To help further my career I took on the role as Head of Business and Enterprise in 2003 at The Dukeries College in Nottinghamshire. Set in a former mining community the college offered many facilities to the whole community, many of which I was involved with. During this period I delivered Applied GCSE and GCE Business courses, Leisure and Tourism courses and was an active member of the PSHEE delivery team. This part of my career was perhaps one of the most exciting times as I was able to work with the College's adult education arm to open a "learning shop" on the village high street, work with an external training provider to open a hair and beauty salon for learners and I became Lead Practitioner for Enterprise Education in Nottinghamshire. As part of this role I developed new programmes of study and spoke at a number of local conferences to Head Teachers to share my experiences of integrating enterprise into the curriculum. An exciting opportunity I was able to take advantage of during this time was to co-author text books with colleagues for Applied GCE Travel and Tourism (under previous surname of Reynolds). These are still sold today and are one of my proudest achievements. Keen to progress my career in 2006 I moved to Redhill School in the role of Personal Development Coordinator. This whole school role meant I had responsibility for PSHEE, Citizenship, Work-related learning, Work Experience, Enterprise Education, International Links and Vocational Education. My teaching responsibilities were varied and I delivered BTEC Business courses, GCSE Business, ICT and Health and Social Care and Applied GCE Business, ICT and Health and Social Care during my time at Redhill. Eager to progress the

work related learning curriculum and to make work experience a valuable learning opportunity, I introduced BTEC Workskills to the curriculum for all year ten students. This course allowed students to effectively prepare for work experience and reflect upon it, as well as gain a qualification. As part of my international responsibilities I was lucky enough to be able to visit our partner school in Goa, India and investigate management structures in schools. During my final year at Redhill School I joined the senior leadership team and had overall responsibility for the curriculum. Here my remit was to ensure the curriculum offered to students was broad and well-balanced and for the first time I introduced level one and two courses into the school's post 16 offer. During my time at both The Dukeries College and Redhill School one of the most enjoyable parts of my role was to mentor beginning teachers and newly qualified colleagues. I worked on a number of staff development projects including developing in service training for middle leaders and increasingly found that teaching and learning and staff development were the most satisfying elements of the job. This then lead me to actively searching for a role in initial teacher education and in March 2009 I began work at West Nottinghamshire College (now Vision West Notts) as a tutor on teacher education programmes in the post compulsory sector. My current responsibilities involve me delivering and assessing modules of study, being a personal tutor and observing learners in their own teaching environment. I have worked as part of the college's quality team undertaking cross college graded observations and as Programme Area Leader for the Teacher Education team to cover a colleague's extended period of sick leave. My particular interests are promoting the sharing of good practice and effective mentoring. I am currently awaiting publication of an article entitled "Same time next week" in "Teaching Business and Economics", journal of the EBEA, about my own experiences of mentoring colleagues. In December 2010, I received two "Star Awards" at the college's annual celebration event. One was for outstanding teaching and learning and the other for outstanding student support. Some of the work in my current role involves working with employers delivering bespoke programmes of study. This has involved me working with large organisations such as British Bakeries, Nottinghamshire Police Service and Trackwork. My current job role is unique in that it allows me to access all contexts of the lifelong learning sector through observations and taught sessions as learners come from all contexts making the role varied and interesting.

Subject Currency My degree, BSc (Hons) Retail Management from Loughborough University (gained July 1999) covered a wide variety of business and management topics including economics, finance and accounting, marketing, and human resources as well as retail specific topics such as logisitics, store operations, merchandising and retail information systems. This provided me with a good foundation for teaching Business Studies and related topics. Upon completion of my degree studies, I then completed a PGCE in Business and Economics at the Institute of Education, University of London. QTS was awarded following the completion of my probationary period as a newly qualified teacher. To widen my knowledge of teaching and learning further, I am currently enrolled on a Masters in Education course with the Open University specialising in educational leadership and management. I have successfully completed the first module and have two further modules to complete. I also hold GCSE passes at grade C or above in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science.

Teaching and Learning Teaching and learning and the modelling of good practice is at the heart of delivering teacher education programmes. As a result of this I feel that thorough planning and preparation are central to the delivery of good quality sessions, as well as using a number of different techniques, activities and resources to suit the learning styles and needs of my learners. Over the years I have developed many different teaching resources to help structure the courses and programmes that I deliver. For medium and long term planning I devise schemes of work to help me plan courses and outline the indicative content of each session. With reference to short term planning, the lesson plans I create set measurable outcomes for all, most and some learners taking into account differentiation, inclusion and stretch and challenge. Examples are attached: * Lesson plan one * Lesson plan two * Lesson plan three * Lesson plan four Helping learners to be organised is also a key aspect of my teaching role as the majority of my learners are working in full time teaching roles whilst completing their in-service teacher development qualifications. I produce detailed handbooks to help learners plan assessment tasks and observations. In lessons I aim to use a number of different learning resources to include, motivate and enthuse learners. I see learning as a shared experience and encourage learners to share their knowledge and experiences with each other. Another key element of the lessons I deliver and the nature of the programmes taught is to help learners develop their own reflective practice. Useful tasks to help learners do this are diamond 7 or 9 activities, where learners are asked to rank ideas or criteria in order, and value continuum activities where learners are presented with statements and have to explain why they agree or disagree with that statement. A key feature of the programmes I currently deliver on is the provision of tutorials. One-toone support is offered to learners where they can seek advise about academic work, their own teaching and observation preparation. This support is invaluable to many of our learners as they are able to seek tailored support and help which meets their needs. My efforts in supporting students were recognised at a college award ceremony in December Tracking learner work is of paramount importance to help keep up to date with learner submissions of work and to help learners achieve their targets. By knowing where learners are at in terms of completing work and results for modules, more successful outcomes can be gained. Providing learners with constructive feedback is also an important aspect of my role. This helps learners develop their academic writing and own reflective processes whilst also allowing them to meet assessment criteria.

In the last five years I have achieved a grade 1 in each graded observation I have had. In December 2010, I received a star award from the college where I work for outstanding teaching and learning. Other examples of programmes I have developed are the BTEC Workskills suite of qualifications. For this I developed lesson plans, learner resources/booklets, planning documents and staff training. To help develop my own skills with regards to teaching and learning, I have attended a number of CPD sessions. These have been particularly useful in helping me to rise to the challenge of delivering higher education programmes. I continually seek to improve my own teaching and learning and the experience my learners have.

Self Evaluation Based upon reflection, an analysis of strenghts and weaknesses (SWOT analysis) and performance management meetings, I have identified a number of learning goals to complete over the next twelve months, which will benefit my own teaching and learning. The targets which I have identified are detailed in the development planning section of the portfolio, but are summarised below: 1. Investigate blended delivery models and distance learning delivery models used by other providers for teacher education courses. 2. Resume M(Ed) studies. 3. Learn about the new changes to CTLLS specifications - devise and implement new programmes of study.

Development Planning Based upon a review of my current strengths and weaknessess, appraisals with my line manager and the current needs of the team I work in, my individual learning targets for the next twelve months are: 1. Investigate blended delivery models and distance learning delivery models used by other providers for teacher education courses. In the current economic climate, many potential learners are looking for ways to study that are more cost effective and make use of new technologies. To keep abreast with new developments and to remain competitive the team I work in are looking to develop offering our PTLLS courses using either blended learning models and/or online resources to provide distance learning courses. By the end of twelve months (September 2012) I will have needed to: *Conduct research as to the offer of competitors. *Receive training about the advanced features of the college's virtual learning environment (VLE) so that distance learning courses can be created using the VLE as a platform for delivery. *Develop at least five resources/activities that can be used as a part of a distance learning programme of study. The benefits that this will bring me individually are that I will have a greater knowledge of how to use new technology within my own teaching and learning. This will help to engage learners and model good practice to beginning teachers. By achieving this target I will also be preparing myself for reform within the sector and exploiting new opportunities within the sector. The benefit to the whole team will be the increased flexibility of delivery, being able to respond better to learner demand and expand our operations beyond the local area where we are situated, thus ensuring competitiveness and sustainability of the team. 2. Resume my Masters level study, following maternity leave. Currently I have successfully completed one module of an M(Ed) course with the Open University. My studies have been put on hold this last year due to maternity leave and the competing demands of working and looking after a young family. However, I now feel in a position to be able to resume study at this level and complete another module of the course. To achieve this goal, I need to: *Investigate modules on offer as part of the M(Ed) Leadership and Management programme. *Select an appropriate module and register to the course.

*Complete all module tasks (on going and examinable) components and attend all tutorials. The benefit I gain from achieving this goal will to be nearer to completing the M(Ed) programme (two thirds of the course will be completed) and to keep my subject knowledge up to date. By working towards completing my Masters I will also be increasing my employability as more options working in an HE environment become available. As I intend to share new knowledge, theories and practice with colleagues, there will be benefits to the team I work with. This will also have an impact upon my own teaching as I can share current thinking and theory with my initial teacher education students. 3. Learn about the new changes to CTLLS specifications - devise and implement new programmes of study. Due to recent changes within the sector, the CTLLS qualifications are set to change to reflect the new standards teachers are expected to achieve whilst on teacher education programmes. This will require me to learn about the new structure of the course, revised content and assessment procedures. Once I have learnt about the new changes I will then need to develop new programmes of study to reflect the changes and deliver the new course to learners. To achieve this goal, I need to: *Attend training/information events provided by the awarding body. *Share information about the course structure with colleagues in team meetings. *Rewrite course handbooks and assessments to match the new specifications. *Plan a new scheme of work and lessons ready for delivery of the new course in The benefit of achieving this goal will be that the correct specifications are being taught to learners and increased personal confidence in implementing and delivering the new specification.

Reflective Practice Reflection forms a major part of my everyday practice as I feel that it is something that I often do subconsciously and occurs "in action" during my sessions and "on action" once sessions are complete. Key to looking at my own professional development is to reflect upon CPD activities I have engaged with, to consider what benefit the activity has had to developing my own teaching and learning and what skills and knowledge I need to further develop as a result of the training. Many of the CPD activities I have engaged with in my work place have been about equality and diversity and safeguarding. This has been necessary to be able to respond to changes in the Ofsted Common Inspection Framework and new legislation. The impact this has had upon my teaching practice is that I now consider more fully where opportunities to discuss equal opportunities may occur in my lessons. In my planning I also consider how equal opportunities fits into the session and where prejudices and stereotyping can be challenged. I am now more aware of promoting equal opportunities and this is of particular importance when delivering to beginning teachers who also need to be aware of these issues in their own teaching. Another CPD activity which has been of great use to me has been a behaviour management event I attended in January In my current role as a tutor on teacher education programmes, one of the key areas our learners are keen to develop and need help with is that of behaviour management. The event led by an external provider enabled me to consider which behaviour management are most effective and appropriate to use in different situations and in turn I was able to share this with my learners. This CPD activity was also very useful for our whole teaching team as on some of our courses there are specific behaviour management modules and this CPD event helped planning and the development of new resources. Working on university level courses has been a new challenge that I have encountered in the last two academic years and an area which I feel that CPD activities have been most beneficial. As a practitioner of over ten years, predominantly teaching year olds, knowing how to teach learners on graduate programmes and level 6 courses appropriately has been a concern. Not wanting to patronise learners and to effectively stretch and challenge learners academically has been an area where I have needed professional development. Working with one of the college's learning consultants to explore teaching and learning strategies for HE learners has exposed me to different teaching strategies and has given me the opportunity to work with other colleagues who are experienced HE practitioners and share good practice. This has allowed me to develop sessions where learners are engaged and active whilst stimulated at an appropriate level. Attending HE development activities has also given me the confidence to try out ideas that before I shied away from. For example, I have used seminars as a teaching and learning tool whereby learners are asked to read journal articles before a session and then discuss them actively in the next teaching session. By attending these events I am building up a repertoire of HE teaching tools and have become a more confident practitioner.

Assessing HE level qualifications has also been an area where both myself and my learners have benefited from CPD activities. By attending moderation meetings at the University of Derby I have been able to look at other pieces of level 5 and 6 work and judge the standard of work at these levels. For my learners that has been beneficial as I feel more confident in making assessment decisions and I can make these more accurately and provide constructive feedback to learners. Working as part of the cross college observation team has been a beneficial experience over the last academic year as it has allowed me to reflect and observe teachers through a "different pair of spectacles". By observing colleagues and grading their lessons in line with Ofsted criteria, I have become much more aware of the criteria we as teachers are judged against and have learnt the mechanics of the college's quality team. This has allowed me to share this information with direct team colleagues and to also improve my own performance in teaching sesisons, which benefits the experience of learners as I strive to deliver interesting and engaging teaching sessions. As an educator on initial teaching training programmes I am in the fortunate position in that I teach in an area where colleagues and learners share experiences of their own teaching and CPD thus accessing and sharing with wider communities of practice.
