I would like to take this opportunity to not only welcome all of our families back but also introduce myself. My name is Rebeccah Brooking and I am pleased and humbled to be the new principal here at Gateway Lab School. I have a background in both urban and special education and I have a deep passion for creating learning environments where students feel supported and successful. I received my Bachelors of Science in Elementary and Special Education from Temple University and my Masters of Education in School Leadership from Wilmington University. I am coming to Gateway from EastSide Charter School in Wilmington, DE where I served as the Assistant Principal of Middle School for 2 years. I am incredibly excited to start off this year with all of you and your amazing child. Our Nutrition Program manager, Elizabeth Scheinberg, is sending a packet to you containing: Breakfast and Lunch menus, Meal Benefit Forms to apply for free or reduced price meals, and an information overview of frequently asked questions (FAQ) about our GLS Nutrition Program. Enjoy! The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 27 th. Doors open at 8:45. The day will officially begin at 8:55. Students need to be in their Homerooms by 9:00. Dismissal is 4:00PM. You are invited to tour the school and meet your child's teachers before school starts at the Teacher Meet and Greet on August 25 th, 5:00-7:00PM. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer. 2 Summary of Information Please be sure to review the Student Handbook which will be available on the website. Attendance (School hours: Doors open at 8:45 am; School day is 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) Students need to be in their homeroom before 9:00 am. Any students arriving late must be accompanied by a parent/guardian and signed in at the school office. Bus dismissal is at 4:00 pm and dismissal for car riders at 4:05 pm. Students must have notes for absences, late arrivals, and early dismissals to the office within 3 days. If students arrive after 11:30 am, even though they attend the remainder of the school day, it will be counted as an absence. Absences without a doctor/medical note or for a viable reason with a note will be an unexcused absence. Before Care Registration Due to the interest shown on the Before Care Survey, GLS will be offering Before Care. Please complete the Before Care Registration Form. Cost per student is 10 equal payments of $99.50 due the first day of the month, September to June. Any student who pays to attend Before Care will have the benefit of joining Clubs and Sports at no cost! Bus Information The Bus Route schedules will be posted on the school website and will be sent to out to parents in August. The routes are for Hub Stops ---this is not a door-to-door service. It will take a few weeks to perfect the exact times of pick-up and drop-off, so please be patient, and be at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to and after the schedule times. All students must fill out a Transportation Form and return to the school office by Tuesday, August 25 th at the Meet & Greet 5-7:00 pm. Calendar (Available on the school website.) The school calendar is provided for families to plan events and activities at school and home. The school has endeavored to include all activities but may need to add events or change dates. Please be sure to check the calendar for changes as well as your student s book bags and folders and ask them about changes in activities. The school will continue to contact parents/guardians through the website, E-Blasts, ROBO Calls, and with flyers and mailings. Dismissal Procedures In our pursuit of excellence at Gateway Lab School, we continue to improve in all areas including our dismissal procedures. To dismiss our students quickly and safely, for everyone s benefit, we need everyone to cooperate. Administrators and teachers are not available for conferences at morning drop off or dismissal. If you need to talk to an administrator or teacher, please call the office and leave a message or them directly (found on the website). 1. The latest time for an Early Dismissal is 3:30 pm. If you need to take your child to an appointment, etc. you must pick up by 3:30 pm. The office needs to be open and available at the end of the day. 2. Bus riders will be dismissed from class one bus at a time. Students will be released when their bus is called. 3. Car riders will be dismissed in order of their car position in the car line. Health Information Emergency Data Cards MUST be turned in to the Nurse by the first student school day! The Nurse s Letter and Illness Policy should be reviewed, as it serves as a guideline to your child s health and school attendance. Please notify the nurse with any changes in your child s medications or health treatments. All medicines must be given to the Nurse by a parent or guardian for the Nurse to dispense. Students are not allowed to carry medicines. Lunch & Snacks / Food Program Information about the Food Program including costs and menu are available in the school office, on the website and at the Meet & Greet. If your child brings their breakfast or lunch, please remember to pack a nutritiously, including a drink. (No sodas, sport drinks, or any high caffeine or high sugar content drink.) Students need to bring their own water bottles clearly marked with their name, and may refill them at the water fountain. Cool Packs are recommended for foods that are perishable. Students who eat in the lunch room may have limited access to a microwave depending on the number of users and the amount of time for lunch. Meet & Greet Night Tuesday, August 25 th from 5-7:00 pm This is a wonderful opportunity to see the facility changes, meet your new teachers, get your schedules and see your friends and new classmates. Information will be available for extra-curricular activities and many additional events and activities at GLS. Parent Notification System GLS uses an automated system to contact parents for late openings and early dismissal due to inclement weather, important events, weekly notification of events, bus information, etc. Please be sure to fill out the Parent/Guardian Information & ROBO Call Form and return it to the homeroom teacher or school office.

3 School Supplies Grade level school supply lists are included in the summer packet. Please use this as a reference while doing your back to school shopping. Summer Reading (Available on the website under RESOURCES / Parents.) Technology Agreement Forms Included in the summer packet. While waiting for delivery of uniforms, students will need to wear the following: Collared shirts in Lt. blue, navy, white, yellow or pink. NO non-gls T- SHIRTS ALLOWED. STUDENTS MUST HAVE A WHITE GATEWAY COLLARED SHIRT FOR PERFORMANCES AND FIELD TRIPS. As of October, all students must be in in school uniform, whether T-shirts or collared shirts with the school logo. The bottoms (shorts, pants, skirts, jumpers, skorts, and capris) must be in navy or khaki color, and may be purchased at a store of your choice. No cargo pants/shorts with large pockets, please. All bottoms must be to the waist--- no low-riding clothing. Shoes must be in good condition (sneakers preferred), properly fastened or tied, and sandals must have a back to them. Crocs are NOT acceptable. Student uniform violations will result in a call to parents to remove their child or bring a change of clothing/shoes for their child to continue the school day. The school maintains discretion over the clothing choices, including tight or improper fitting of clothes. See the school handbook for complete dress code and foot wear requirements. Your respect for the school standards is appreciated.

4 Meet and Greet Night August 25 th 5-7 pm Parents and Students are invited to visit anytime during this open house event. Stop in and see the changes to the school building completed this summer. Visit the classrooms and meet your new teachers. Rosters will be posted outside each homeroom. Light refreshments will be available. Gateway Friends & Family (GFF) welcomes you back for the year! It s going to be a great one! Come see our table at the Meet & Greet night on August 25 th, 5-7 pm. A limited number of Gateway spirit wear shirts will be for sale ($10 each) and orders will be taken for an early fall order. ALL families at Gateway Lab School are a part of the GFF (no dues required!). See the calendar for upcoming monthly PAC /GFF meetings, come hear what s going on, what s coming up and give your thoughts on how to make Gateway the BEST it can be for our KIDS! We are looking for a few great parents, grandparents or guardians interested to help this year with planning, teacher appreciation, events, fundraisers, Box Tops and more! 17 Technology Use Agreement Throughout the school day, your student may be allowed to use technology owned by the Gateway Lab School. That technology includes, but is not limited to, desktop and laptop computers, tablets and digital projectors. This document will outline the expectations for use and care of the technology while it is being lent to the student. All technology will be loaned to the student in good working condition. It is the student s responsibility to care for the equipment and ensure that it is retained in a safe environment during use. This equipment is, and at all times, remains the property of the Gateway Lab School, and is herewith loaned to the student for educational purposes only. The student may not deface or destroy this property in any way. Inappropriate use of technology may result in the student losing his/her right to its use. Repair or replacement costs due to the misuse of technology may be responsibility of the student or student s family. Technology may be used by the student for non-commercial purposes only, in accordance with the school s policies and rules, Gateway s Acceptable Use Policy, as well as local, state, and federal statutes. The Gateway Lab School network is provided for the academic use of all students and staff. The student agrees to take no action that would interfere with the efficient, academic use of the network. Gateway administration has the ability and reserves the right to track, monitor, and device wipe all technology devices, related technology, and communications to assure and maintain responsible use and maintain system integrity in accordance with its acceptable use policy. The student acknowledges and agrees that the student s use of the school s property is a privilege and that by the student s agreement to the terms hereof, the student acknowledges the student s responsibility to protect and safeguard the school s property and to return the same in good condition and repair upon request by Gateway Lab School. Your student will not be allowed to use school-owned technology unless this agreement and the Acceptable Use Policy is signed and returned to the school. 18 Internet Safety Policy Introduction It is the policy of the Gateway Lab School to: (a) prevent user access over its computer network to, or transmission of, inappropriate material via Internet, electronic mail, or other forms of direct electronic communications; (b) prevent unauthorized access and other unlawful online activity; (c) prevent unauthorized online disclosure, use, or dissemination of personal identification information of minors; and (d) comply with the Children s Internet Protection Act [Pub. L. No and 47 USC 254(h)]. Definitions Key terms are as defined in the Children s Internet Protection Act.* Access to Inappropriate Material To the extent practical, technology protection measures (or Internet filters ) shall be used to block or filter Internet, or other forms of electronic communications, access to inappropriate information. Specifically, as required by the Children s Internet Protection Act, blocking shall be applied to visual depictions of material deemed obscene or child pornography, or to any material deemed harmful to minors. Inappropriate Network Usage To the extent practical, steps shall be taken to promote the safety and security of users of the Gateway Lab School online computer network when using electronic mail, chat rooms, instant messaging, and other forms of direct electronic communications. Specifically, as required by the Children s Internet Protection Act, prevention of inappropriate network usage includes: (a) unauthorized access, including so-called hacking, and other unlawful activities; and (b) unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal identification information regarding minors. Education, Supervision and Monitoring It shall be the responsibility of all members of the Gateway Lab School staff to educate, supervise and monitor appropriate usage of the online computer network and access to the Internet in accordance with this policy, the Children s Internet Protection Act, the Neighborhood Children s Internet Protection Act, and the Protecting Children in the 2st Century Act. Procedures for the disabling or otherwise modifying any technology protection measures shall be the responsibility of the Technology Coordinator or designated representatives. The Technology Coordinator or designated representatives will provide age appropriate training for students who use the Gateway Lab School s Internet facilities. The training provided will be designed to promote Gateway s commitment to: a. The standards and acceptable use of Internet services as set forth in the Gateway Lab School Internet Safety Policy; b. Student safety with regard to: i. safety on the Internet; ii. appropriate behavior while on online, on social networking Web sites, and in chat rooms; and iii. cyberbullying awareness and response. c. 19 Following receipt of this training, the student will acknowledge that he/she received the training, understood it, and will follow the provisions of the school's acceptable use policies. CIPA definitions of terms: MINOR. The term minor means any individual who has not attained the age of 17 years. TECHNOLOGY PROTECTION MEASURE. The term ``technology protection measure'' means a specific technology that blocks or filters Internet access to visual depictions that are: 1. OBSCENE, as that term is defined in section 1460 of title 18, United States Code; 2. CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, as that term is defined in section 2256 of title 18, United States Code; or 3. Harmful to minors. HARMFUL TO MINORS. The term ``harmful to minors'' means any picture, image, graphic image file, or other visual depiction that: 1. Taken as a whole and with respect to minors, appeals to a prurient interest in nudity, sex, or excretion; 2. Depicts, describes, or represents, in a patently offensive way with respect to what is suitable for minors, an actual or simulated sexual act or sexual contact, actual or simulated normal or perverted sexual acts, or a lewd exhibition of the genitals; and 3. Taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value as to minors. SEXUAL ACT; SEXUAL CONTACT. The terms ``sexual act'' and ``sexual contact'' have the meanings given such terms in section 2246 of title 18, United States Code.
