PLM systems, in turn, rely on high-performance databases. When the database system underlying the PLM software is unreliable or slow, the PLM software cannot work efficiently and the value of the system is eroded. Therefore, selecting a PLM system and selecting a database on which to run it are important business decisions. Dassault Systèmes ENOVIA V6 is a standards-based, scalable PLM system that can support end-to-end product development processes for all companies, from small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) to large, global enterprises. ENOVIA V6 provides the flexibility that administrators need to easily configure business processes, user interfaces, and infrastructure options to help meet an organization s needs. This white paper presents benchmark testing data that validates the performance and scalability of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise as an enterprise-class database management system for ENOVIA V6. The tests confirm that when running on SQL Server, ENOVIA V6 can scale to 5,000 user workloads per hour while maintaining optimal performance in a 3D CAD Rich-Client scenario; in an online collaborative business process Webtop governance scenario, ENOVIA V6 can scale to more than 20,000 user scenarios per hour while maintaining performance and meeting user requirements. This paper also describes some of the additional benefits that SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise brings to an ENOVIA V6 PLM system, demonstrating that together, SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and ENOVIA V6 provide a reliable and cost-effective PLM system that can help an enterprise improve time to market and profitability by reducing development time and costs. 5 ENOVIA V6 Architecture The ENOVIA V6 architecture is composed of an n-tier architecture that is accessible from anywhere in the world. Behind the application server, there is a unique database instance that provides a single source of truth. The remote sites use a local file server to load large representation files, eliminating timeconsuming network transmissions. In addition, the ENOVIA V6 architecture helps improve Internet communication by reducing the number of server round trips to minimize latency in wide area networks (WANs). We continue to develop our long-standing relationship with Dassault Systèmes, as we share the common goal of reaching more users in an organization. By offering customers applications that are easy to implement and use, we will ultimately improve productivity while also lowering total cost of ownership. All communication between sites supports proxy-reverse proxy implementation and encryption capabilities if Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is implemented. In addition to the IT security schemas, the ENOVIA V6 applications deliver specific security schemas for user management (P&O, or permissions and ownerships) and data access (security). The ENOVIA V6 server contains the ENOVIA Live Collaboration environment, and the applications are deployed via a Web Application Archive (WAR) or Enterprise Archive (EAR) file in a Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) web application server. These components, along with the required database server and other application servers, make up the ENOVIA PLM solution. Figure 1 shows the ENOVIA V6 multi-tier architecture. Figure 1. 7 management, complex event processing, extract, transform and load (ETL), online analytical processing (OLAP), data mining, reporting services, and self-service business intelligence (BI) tools. Competitors licensing models add costs for options and add-ins. 6 Simpler systems management and lower staffing costs. SQL Server database administrators can typically manage four times as many physical databases as a competitor s DBAs, leading to an estimated annual savings of $5,779 in administrative costs per database, a 460 percent difference in annual cost of administration per database. 7,8 SQL Server is the most secure of any of the major database platforms. Since 2002, SQL Server has recorded the fewest reported vulnerabilities as compiled by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). 9 With SQL Server, Dassault Systèmes customers can save with reduced licensing, hardware, administration, and support fees, which translate into substantially lower costs over the life of the system. Benchmark Testing Overview Scalability and stability are important to users of ENOVIA V6. Customers want to be confident that their database platform can maintain the performance and scalability they require to optimize their business processes even as their organizations grow and the number of ENOVIA V6 users increases. For this reason, engineers from Dassault Systèmes and Microsoft conducted multi-user scalability tests for ENOVIA V6 with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise in May and June The benchmarking tests were designed to simulate real-world deployments of large ENOVIA V6 customers. Note that Dassault Systèmes uses a 10:1 collaborative-to-concurrent ratio estimation. This is based on observation that in production environments, if 100 collaborative users are logged on to the system, then approximately 10 users will be concurrently executing on the application-tier server at peak times. 8 Rich-Client applications: Employ a desktop user interface (they are not run in a web browser). Require local licenses for use of the software. Webtop applications: Are run in a web browser. Use server-based licenses for use of the software. Have back-end server applications on the V6 server platform. Rich-Client Scenario A Rich-Client three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) multi-user scenario that used Dassault Systèmes CATIA V6 was tested at the Dassault Systèmes facility in Velizy, France. This scenario consisted of loading 3D CAD designs from the database in a multi-user environment. CATIA V6, the 3D collaborative CAD software from Dassault Systèmes, accessed the 3D designs in the database through the ENOVIA application. Test Environment The test configuration was based on one of Dassault Systèmes biggest customers and consisted of a database server, application servers, and load generators. Details of the environment are listed in Table 1, and shown in Figure 2. Table 1. Benchmark testing environment for Rich-Client scenario Rich-Client Test Cases The benchmark tests measured user response time for a collaborative design scenario or PLM activity cycle from logging on to the end of the open operation, inside CATIA V6. The test cases used are listed in Table 2. Table 2. 10 Figure 3 shows screenshots of the test cases. Figure 3. Test cases The benchmark tests measured the number of these user scenarios that could be performed successfully in an hour for various numbers of concurrent scenarios (79, 119, 158, 178, 210, and 250). A ratio of 10 percent was then assumed between the number of concurrent scenarios and an estimated number of named users. Webtop Governance Scenario A multi-user Webtop light-client online collaborative business process (CBP) scenario was tested in the Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) in Boston, Massachusetts. The tests were designed to simulate up to 20,000 users scenarios per hour, a number typical for a large enterprise environment. Test Environment The Webtop light-client test environment consisted of a database server for metadata storage, a master collaboration server (MCS) for business logic and web access, a file collaboration server (FCS) for content and stream storage data, and load generators. Details of the software used are listed in Table 3, and the layout is shown in Figure 4. Table 3. 11 The hardware configuration is shown in Figure 4. Figure 4. Benchmark testing configuration Webtop Test Cases Dassault Systèmes designed test cases to simulate the various activities of a design engineer using ENOVIA V6, such as logging on to the application, running searches, and reviewing and editing data. Each test case included a number of transactions that typify tasks that a design engineer performs, such as expanding and collapsing a view of a bill of materials (BOM) composed of CAD drawings. A test run consisted of executing all test cases. The average of the time required for all transactions within the test cases was measured for each test run. For example, the transactions within the BOM Expand test case, a read-intensive test that simulates a design engineer expanding a 2,000- part BOM, are listed in Table 5. 13 for a total of 5,001 parts. An Engineering Change Order (ECO) object maintains the relationships between parts data and the system. The test cases used a total of four million objects. Figure 5 illustrates a simplified example of the BOM in the database. Figure 5. BOM template A test run consisted of executing all seven test cases. The time required to complete all transactions within each test case was measured, and then the average transaction time was calculated for each test run. Setting up SQL Server for ENOVIA The benchmarking tests used the standard setup that Dassault Systèmes recommends for ENOVIA running on SQL Server. Power management settings Power management settings can have a significant impact on performance of ENOVIA V6. In the benchmark testing, the High Performance plan was used. This can improve the elapsed time of end-users scenarios by up to 10 percent. TCP Chimney TCP Chimney was disabled. This can improve the network async_network_io wait time on the SQL Server by up to 50 percent. Amount of RAM For ENOVIA V6 and for SQL Server, Dassault Systèmes recommends 8 GB RAM per core (minimum is 4 GB of RAM per core). 14 Table 6 shows the recommendations for distributing the RAM. Table 6. Lock Pages in Memory The Lock Pages in Memory privilege was enabled for the SQL Server service account to improve memory management. Disk configuration for SQL Server Disk should be formatted by using the /A:64k to improve the size of the allocation unit. This can improve read and write disk performance by up to 15 percent. RAID 10 The benchmarking tests used RAID 10 for SAN. Tempdb The tempdb system database is a global resource that is available to all users connected to the instance of SQL Server. Configuring tempdb correctly is critical for optimizing performance. A general recommendation is to create one data file for each processor core on the server. For the benchmark testing, eight equally sized tempdb files were used. System Tuning A number of parameters were varied during the benchmark tests, including the number, memory allocations of the Java Virtual Machines (JVMs), the number of connections per JVM, and the think time. ENOVIA uses a default value of 90 seconds for the think time to realistically represent user interactions with the system. The think time is applied after each transaction, in all scenarios. In the benchmarking tests, the think time was varied to reach the target number of user scenarios per hour. Test Results The benchmark testing results confirm that ENOVIA V6 running on SQL Server 2008 R2 is a scalable and high-performing solution. 15 Rich-Client Scenario Test Results Table 7 shows the number of user scenarios per hour and the CPU utilization for both the application and database servers for the Rich-Client 3D CAD scenario testing. Results were measured for 79, 119, 158, 178, 210, and 250 concurrent scenarios. Table 7. CPU consumption The Rich-Client test results confirm that ENOVIA V6 can scale to more than 5,000 user workloads per hour when deployed on SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. 16 Webtop Governance Scenario Test Results Table 8 shows the number of user scenarios per hour for 1,000 and 3,000 concurrent scenarios and with varying amounts of think time. Table 8. Conclusion Scalability and stability are important to users of ENOVIA V6. Customers want assurances that, as their organizations grow and the number of ENOVIA V6 users increases, their database platform can maintain the performance they rely on. The benchmark tests designed by Dassault Systèmes simulate the real-world usage patterns of large ENOVIA V6 customers. The results show that ENOVIA V6 running on SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise can support at least 5,000 user workloads per hour while maintaining optimal performance in a Rich-Client scenario, and can execute more than 20,000 CBP user scenarios per hour in a Webtop governance scenario. Dassault Systèmes customers can select SQL Server as the database platform for even large and complex ENOVIA V6 deployments with confidence. 17 Appendix 1: Definitions Following are definitions of terms used in this white paper. Named user Users declared in the ENOVIA V6 database who can potentially use the system. User scenario A given set of transactions performed by a user to accomplish a task (for examples, Open, Modify, or Save); typically performed in a timespan of approximately 1 to 10 minutes. Number of user scenarios per hour Number of user scenarios that can be performed with success during one hour. Scalability The ability of a system to add load (through additional users) and resources nearly linearly while continuing to deliver the same level of user response time (a deviation of user response time of less than 10 percent) while maintaining a CPU utilization of less than 75 percent.
