The benchmark testing was very successful, demonstrating a near-linear scalability to,000 concurrent users running against a database of. million policies, while maintaining excellent performance. For more information about SQL Server, visit Benchmark Testing Overview As part of their strategic alliance, CSC and Microsoft ran real-world benchmarking tests at the Microsoft Platform Adoption Center (PAC) in Redmond, Washington, to evaluate and optimize the performance and scalability of CSC s Integral P&C component running on SQL Server 00 R Enterprise, Windows Server 00 R Enterprise, and a pre-release version of SQL Server 0, SQL Server 0 Release Candidate 0 (RC0) Enterprise. The benchmarking tests aimed to simulate the typical daily activities of agents at a large insurer, with up to,000 concurrent users running against a database of. million policies. This was achieved on five application servers, a database server, and storage, all industry-standard, with a total list price of less than $,000 a compelling scenario for customers. A variety of tests were performed, including: Tests that investigated the performance of Integral on a single application server with various numbers of virtual users. Note that based on the test methodology, 0 virtual users are equivalent to 00 concurrent users. Tests that looked at the horizontal scalability of the solution by starting with one application server with 00 concurrent users, and adding application servers up to five application servers with,000 concurrent users. Tests that compared the performance of five application servers with,000 concurrent users without database mirroring to that of the system with database mirroring. Tests that compared the performance of three application servers with,000 concurrent users to that of five application servers with,000 concurrent users. Tests that compared the performance of CSC s Integral running on SQL Server 00 R with that of Integral running on SQL Server 0 RC0 Enterprise. Benchmark equipment Application and Load Generation Servers The tests used up to five HP ProLiant DL0 G application servers and up to four HP ProLiant DL0 G load-generation servers. This ensured that the tests were carried out at full throttle, and that the tests provided an accurate measurement of the scalability of the system. Database Server For the majority of tests a single Intel -socket database server was used, taking advantage of the latest generation of the Intel Xeon processor E family. For the database mirroring tests only, a second identical database server was utilized. The configuration was as follows: SQL Server 00 R Enterprise and SQL Server 0 RC0 Enterprise Windows Server 00 R Enterprise with Service Pack (SP) Four Intel Xeon X0 processors, for a total of cores GB of random access memory (RAM) Benchmark Testing Results: CSC s Integral and Microsoft SQL Server

10 Storage X-IO Hyper ISE storage modules provided. TB of storage for the database tables and indices. However, less than TB of the total capacity of the storage was used for the tests. Test Scenarios The benchmark testing used automated test scenarios that represent more than 0 percent of the transaction types that are performed daily at a typical insurance firm, including inquiries, updates, and inserts. Each test scenario involved between three and user steps, with a think time of 0 seconds between steps. Completion times varied between test scenarios. The tests scenarios and the number of steps in each are listed in Table. Table. Single Application Server The team from CSC and Microsoft performed a series of single application server benchmarking tests with the goal of identifying the optimal number of virtual users that can be served by a single entry-level application server. These tests were performed on one application server (HP ProLiant DL0 G with cores and GB RAM) and one database server (Intel Xeon -socket), using the IBM System x0 X server to generate the test workload. 12 For these single application server tests, the team added virtual users up to a maximum of 0 virtual users, which is equivalent to concurrent users. The team ran each scenario several times, and calculated an average of these test runs. The test results showed that the best balance between number of virtual users (in terms of business transactions throughput) and execution time was achieved at approximately 0 virtual users. Figure also shows that the average CPU utilization remained below percent, which is considered acceptable. Table lists the response times, or average time to complete each test scenario, for the various numbers of virtual users on a single server. These execution times do not include the time it takes to render a screen, so actual response times are approximately a second higher. Typically, acceptable screen refreshes are less than three seconds. Note that the histogram shows the number of steps across all test scenarios with specific response times. There are some more complex steps that take longer than a second to execute, with a small number of outliers that had execution times of longer than two seconds. Multiple Application Servers To confirm the scalability of the solution, the CSC and Microsoft team performed benchmark tests using multiple application servers in a scale-out configuration. These tests simulated 00 concurrent users (0 virtual users) per application server, and added application servers up to a total of five. The team ran each scenario several times, and calculated an average of these test runs. The test results showed that as the number of servers increased from one to five and as the corresponding number of concurrent users increased from 00 to,000 the throughput increased nearly linearly. At the same time, the average number of transactions per server decreased only slightly (less than 0 percent); this demonstrates the effectiveness of using a scale-out deployment to increase the overall throughput. 17 Effect of Database Mirroring Tests were performed to investigate the effect of synchronous database mirroring (high-safety mode) on the latency of operations in Integral. These tests were performed using SQL Server 00 R Enterprise. The team ran each scenario several times, and calculated an average of these test runs. Note that database mirroring is a primarily software solution for increasing database availability, providing a hot or warm standby server. Database mirroring involves redoing every insert, update, and delete operation that occurs on the principal database onto the mirror database. Redoing is accomplished by sending every active transaction log record to the mirror server, which applies log records to the mirror database, in sequence, as quickly as possible. Database mirroring supports synchronous database mirroring (high-safety operating mode) and asynchronous database mirroring (high-performance operating mode). With the synchronous operating mode, the mirror server synchronizes the mirror database with the principal database when a session begins. Once the databases are synchronized, a transaction is committed on both partners, at the cost of increased transaction latency. SQL Server Version Comparison In these tests, the performance of Integral running on SQL Server 0 RC0 Enterprise was compared with that of Integral running on SQL Server 00 R Enterprise, both with five application servers and,000 concurrent users. The average CPU utilization for SQL Server 0 RC0 Enterprise was slightly lower, but because there was plenty of headroom in both scenarios, this slightly lower CPU utilization did not impact the overall performance of CSC s Integral. 21 Summary Scalability, stability, and performance are important to CSC insurance customers. These customers want assurances that as their organizations grow and the number of policies increases, their database software can maintain the performance they rely on. CSC has worked with Microsoft to develop insurance solutions that combine CSC software with Microsoft products and technologies. Benchmark testing and product optimizations are part of this joint effort. The CSC and Microsoft benchmark tests were designed to simulate the real-world usage patterns of large insurance customers. The test results were impressive. In the single application server test with concurrent users, the measured throughput was business transactions per minute. For the five application servers with,000 concurrent users test, the total throughput was, business transactions per minute. SQL Server performed remarkably well in the benchmarking tests, with an average of only 0 percent CPU utilization (never exceeding percent utilization), and using less than 0 GB RAM.
