1 Kents Hill School Summer Reading 2015 This spring the student body selected The Martian by Andy Weir as the All-School Required Book. In this riveting novel NASA astronaut Mark Watney becomes stranded on Mars when other crew members, who assume he is dead, are forced to evacuate. Facing dire circumstances, Watney must resourcefully and ingeniously apply his expertise in engineering, science, and mathematics to find solutions, just as he must balance hopefulness with stoicism, if he has any chance of survival. The Wall Street Journal calls the book the best pure sci-fi novel in years, and students are likely to agree. Students must also read the required book(s) for their grade as listed below before they arrive on campus in the fall. All students are encouraged to read books from the suggested lists as well. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Gibson, Dean of Academics at International Students (non-esl) International students who are NOT in ESL should read the All-School Required book as well as the required book for the grade level of their upcoming English class. ESL Students ALL incoming multilingual international students will be assessed onsite in the fall, and those who are determined to need ESL supports will be placed accordingly in level 1, 2 or 3 of the Kents Hill ESL program. ESL 3 students are placed in mainstream English courses, and therefore are expected to be independently reading at or near grade level. Students who are hoping to be placed into ESL 3 in the fall should attempt to read the all-school summer read (The Martian) in addition to their grade level English course s required reading. If the grade level and all-school reading is quite difficult, this may be an indicator that ESL 2 English would be a more likely placement in the fall. ESL 2 students read fiction and non-fiction at the grade 6-8 level (Lexile Level ) in a structured and supported transitional and sheltered environment. Students who are expecting to enter into ESL 2 in the fall should read The Giver by Lois Lowry (760L). If the ESL 2 reading is quite difficult, this may be an indicator that ESL 1 English would be a more likely placement in the fall.

2 ESL 1 students read fiction and non-fiction at the grade 4-6 level (Lexile level ) in a highly supported first-immersion environment. Students who are expecting to enter into ESL 1 in the fall should read Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo (610L). If the ESL 1 reading is quite difficult, this may be an indicator of a need to do intensive practice in English reading prior to arrival. For ALL students: The first week's lessons in English courses will include review and discussion of the required reading; all students should be familiar with the required books' main characters, basic plots, and major thematic components. Class discussions will be accompanied by a test or writing assignment. Assessment of the Summer Reading will comprise a major portion of the student's grade for the first marking period. All students are expected to bring their own copies of the books for use in class. Important Notes: *The first week s lessons in English will include a review and discussion of the required reading. All students should be familiar with the required books main characters, basic plots, and major thematic components. Class discussions will be accompanied by a test or writing assignment. *Assessment of the Summer Reading will comprise a major portion of the student s grade for the first marking period. *All students are expected to bring their own copies of the books for use in class.
