1 January 1 December 31, REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY R T h e ReHabilitation Center B u i l d i n g B r i g h t e r F u t u r e s
2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO Strategies for future bring excitement In 2013, The ReHabilitation Center is celebrating 55 years of serving people with disabilities and mental health diagnoses in our community. What started as an advocacy effort by a handful of parents in 1958 today serves more than 700 of our friends, family members and neighbors. We are proud of all the good work we have done over the years, and of all the lives we have touched in our mission of building brighter futures. Thanks to our dedicated boards of directors and staff, as well as our friends and supporters in the community, we are as strong an agency now as we have ever been. As I write this, we find ourselves at one of the most critical crossroads we have ever faced. The prospect of drastic cuts in our traditional funding sources is on the horizon. Beyond that, the model for delivering services to the people we serve is evolving rapidly from a bricks and mortar approach to one that gives people the tools they need to thrive as independently as possible in the community. It s a little daunting, to be honest; but we knew these changes were coming for many years, and we ve been planful. In keeping with a 55-year tradition started by our founding parents, we have forged ahead with vision and innovation to assure excellence in providing the very best to those we serve. As a result of these plans, and because of the opportunities that we are creating for ourselves as a result, we can look to the future with hope and excitement. Watch for much more in the coming year as we share some of these new developments. Jim Bellanca President and CEO The ReHabilitation Center 2
3 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRS In President & CEO Jim Bellanca s message, he referenced the challenging times that lie ahead for The ReHabilitation Center and the disability community as a whole. As the agency s administration works to position The ReHab Center for success, the contributions of its collective boards of directors has never been more critical. It is fitting that these are the circumstances under which we acknowledge the contributions of the agency founders. Their courage and fearless determination 55 years ago to forge a future for their children at a time of great uncertainty is an inspiration to us all and is exactly the pioneering spirit we need to marshall as we write the next chapter in The ReHab Center s story. As board members, we can be confident in the direction The ReHab Center is heading. The strategic plan being forged to provide a roadmap into the future is strong. It recognizes the financial realities we must contend with and forges new paths for The ReHab Center that don t compromise the agency s core mission. One important new direction is social enterprise. This strategy will see the agency branch out into profit-generating businesses whose main priority is to help sustain the mission of building brighter futures. The Charles Ried Center for Social Enterprise, dedicated in 2012 in memory of one of the most visionary leaders in The ReHab Center s long history, is an important element of this plan. And the unprecedented gift to the agency from The Rehabilitation Foundation to help build the center is a perfect example of the kinds of innovations and collaborations that are necessary on the board level, throughout the agency s leadership ranks, and with our friends and partners in the community. Sincerely, Louis (Ledgie) DeRose Chair, The Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc. Carol O Connell Chair, HUD Corporations Libby Smith Chair, Cattaraugus Rehabilitation Center, Inc.
