2 What is Chapter 1606 GI Bill?

3 Montgomery G.I. Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) Monthly educational stipend for service members who are currently serving in the Guard or Reserve

4 Montgomery G.I. Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) To qualify: Must currently be a reserve/guard member who signed a six year obligation on or after July 1, 1985 Must have completed dinitial i lactive Duty for Training (IADT)

5 Montgomery G.I. Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) To qualify: Must have High School diploma or completed GED Must remain in good standing with a drilling Sl Selected dreserve unit

6 Montgomery G.I. Bill Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) Benefits eligibility ends 14 years from eligibility start date, or upon service member s separation fromservice service, whichever is sooner. The 14 year window is called the Delimiting Period. Total entitlement is for 36 months

7 PLEASE NOTE: Eligibility for Chapter 1606 Selected Reserve GI Bill is extended for service members who have been mobilized on federal active duty (Title 10 status) The extension of eligibility is equal to the length of the mobilization plus four (4) months.

8 PLEASE NOTE: Period of extension may not go beyond the 14 Period of extension may not go beyond the 14 year delimiting period.

9 How Do I Apply for Chapter 1606 GI Bill?

10 Applying for GI Bill: Step 1 Start by going online to the GI Bill website at:

18 Applying for GI Bill: Step 5 Once you have created an account, select the proper form from the dropdown menu. For Chapter 1606 GI Bill, select VA Form

20 PLEASE NOTE: If you have previously used GI Bill benefits at another institution, you do not need to reapply for benefits. Instead, fill out VA Form , the Change Program/Place of Training form.

21 Applying for GI Bill: Step 6 Follow the instructions in the form. For Chapter 1606 GI Bill, choose Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve from the checklist. Fill out the form accurately and completely. l

23 Applying for GI Bill: Step 7 When you have completed theform, review the final screen for errors or warnings. These must be corrected before submitting the form, or it will not be processed.

24 Applying for GI Bill: Step 8 Once your form is complete and without errors, select the Print Paper Form option. Print a copy, and sign and date the last page. This copy will go to your Campus VA Certifying Official. You may want to print a second copy for your records.

25 Applying for GI Bill: Step 9 Once you have printed your form, select the Submit Form button. This sends an electronic copy to the VA, to begin processing.

26 PLEASE NOTE: Even though you are submitting an electronic copy of the form to the VA, you will not receive any payments until you have turned in all supporting documents to your school s VA Certifying Official.

28 Applying for GI Bill: Step 10 To complete the process, you must give the Campus VA Certifying Official the following: A signed copy of the completed VA A Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) (From your unit) Any Kicker information

29 I applied for GI Bill benefits. Now what?

30 After Applying After you complete all the steps to apply for GI Bill benefits, it takes time (typically 10 weeks or more) for the first payment to arrive. Once you receive your first GI Bill check, you must verify your continuous enrollment in school to the VA.

31 Verifying Enrollment for GI Bill You must verify enrollment on a monthly basis in order to continue to receive GI Bill payments. This can be done one of two ways: by calling the VA hotline at GIBILL1 Or by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (W.A.V.E) which can be found on the GI Bill website at

32 Verifying Enrollment for GI Bill On the GI Bill website, click on Information for Benefits Recipients, and then select the Certify Your Attendance (WAVE) tab. Follow the instructions for logging in, and certify your attendance.

33 PLEASE NOTE: You must certify your attendance every month. Failure to do this will result in an interruption in benefitspayments. You will not be able to access the WAVE system until you have received your first payment.

34 PLEASE NOTE: If you change the number of credits you are taking, this must be changed in the WAVE system. Failure to do so may result in overpayment, which will be recouped by the VA upon discovery.
