One presenter supervises the Apple Core worksheet activity while the other operates the Apple Peeling machine. 1. Explain that students will each make their own apple core picture while they take turns bringing their apple up to be peeled, sliced and cored. 2. Demonstrate each activity. Explain the importance of washing hands before handling food and of washing fruit before eating it. - Demonstrate how you will use the machine to peel, slice and core their apples. - Show how to snap the core in half so that the seeds pop out. Count the seeds and write the number on the board. - Discuss the seeds: their purpose, color, how they differ etc. - Tell students that they may remove and count the seeds from their apple core. - Explain that after their apple has been cut, they will return to their seat and eat their apple and finish their picture if they aren t done. Apple Peeler Machine Activity The presenter in charge of this activity gives each student an apple. The presenter uses the machine to peel, slice and core each student s apple. ONLY THE PRESENTER OPERATES THE MACHINE! THE STUDENT WATCHES. When 8
9 finished, have the student place the apple slices and core on a paper plate. The student takes the plate to his/her seat where he/she may remove and count the seeds in the core and eat the apple slices. Save a couple of the peels, throw the rest in the wastebasket. Optional: After the apples are peeled, show the students who finish their worksheet early how to measure the peel. Is it as tall as the student? 7.
