1 what could you do?? Our supporters have run, swum, climbed, sung, golfed and walked - not to mention danced and partied. In doing so, they ve also helped us look for cures for diseases and provide scholarships and bursaries for students. This pack will help you do your bit. THE UNIVERSITY of EDINBURGH
2 get involved We can help you turn your interest or hobby into a fundraising event to support your most precious project. Kerry Mackay Individual Giving Officer The University of Edinburgh is lucky to have a small army of supporters who have dedicated their time to raising funds for the University through participating in a fundraising event or challenge. Our supporters have swum, climbed, run, sung, walked, skydived, danced, golfed, partied and recited to raise money for us. Motivated by a project or research area particularly close to their hearts, they go to incredible lengths to support the University in its contributions to the community. Previous projects include but are by no means limited to research into Alzheimer s disease, autism, cancer, epilepsy, fragile X syndrome, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and funding access bursaries for students. Whatever your interest or hobby, from cake baking to canoeing, there is always a way to turn it into a fundraising event to support a project close to your heart. Our team are here to help you on your way; we can create an online giving page, sponsorship forms and posters or marketing materials on your behalf. We can also provide you with fundraising tips and advice to make fundraising for the University as straightforward, fun and financially successful as possible. If you would like more information or are keen to get started we d be delighted to hear from you. 3 fundraising ideas Almost any activity can be turned into a fundraiser - from shoe-shining to skydiving, you can have fun while supporting a worthwhile cause. The choice of fundraising activities is almost unlimited; the most important thing to keep in mind is that you choose to organise something which is both safe and legal. It s also a good idea to choose something fun! Once you have decided how you are going to raise money, you need to decide: When you will hold your fundraising event Where it will take place Who needs to be involved Try to keep it as simple as possible as this makes it easier to organise and don t hesitate to contact us for more information or assistance. 4 the stories What some of our fundraisers have done. Alan and Janice Rae s generous celebration When Alan and Janice Rae celebrated their Ruby Wedding Anniversary in 2012, they requested their guests consider making a donation to charity instead rather than giving gifts to them. Alan and Janice nominated the Anne Rowling Clinic for the donations at the request of a family member living with multiple sclerosis, raising almost 800. Claire Forrest & Family have the Y Factor When Anne Forrest sadly lost her battle to oesophageal cancer in 2010 her family set up the Anne Forrest Fund for Oesophageal Cancer Research in her memory. The Forrests, with help from friends and family, have raised over 16,000 by holding an annual Y Factor event - a karaoke evening with a panel of judges, wonderful singing and great humour. Students dance their way to donations The University s Neuroscience honours class, in collaboration with the Neurological and Edinburgh University Folk Society, organised an end of year ceilidh in support of the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research, raising almost 200 for the Centre. Luke Papini s close shave Twenty-year-old Luke Papini, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin s Lymphoma in April 2012, managed to persuade 23 of his friends to shave their heads for the Patrick Wild Centre for Research into Autism, Fragile X Syndrome & Intellectual Disabilities, raising a fantastic 7,000. Ian s tribute to Dragonfly Lynne Ian Senior lost his wife Lynne to leukemia after she had been living with multiple sclerosis for 19 years. He asked friends and family to celebrate Dragonfly Lynne s life by donating to the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic. By remembering Lynne is this way, Ian has raised over 3,500 for the Clinic.
5 fundraising tips Have you thought about venues, advertising or gift aid? These tips will help make your event a success. 1 What, when, where & who Once you have decided what you are going to do to raise money, you need to decide: when you will hold your fundraising event, where it will take place and who needs to be involved. Keep your fundraising event as simple as possible; this not only makes it easier for you to organise, but it also makes it easier to explain to your supporters. 2 Set a fundraising goal Set yourself a goal amount and tell everyone what it is. This will not only encourage people to give generously, but will also push you to meet, or even beat, your target. 3 4 Get an online giving page We can create an online giving page for you simply contact me at kerry.mackay@ed.ac.uk or on Tell everyone In order to be successful you have to ask people to support you and if people don t respond, simply ask again. If you let us know your plans we can produce an online giving page, promotional poster and sponsorship form for you.
6 more fundraising tips Update your signature For example The Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic, at the University of Edinburgh, will provide insight into a number of degenerative neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer s disease, Huntington s disease, motor neurone disease and Parkinson s disease. Currently, these disorders are progressive and incurable. I am supporting the Clinic by taking part in YOUR EVENT NAME, please support me by donating online at WEB ADDRESS. Go cyber everyone in your contact list and text everyone in your phonebook. Promote your fundraising event on Facebook including a link to your online giving page. Tweeters should tweet and bloggers should blog. Be traditional Always have a copy of your sponsorship form with you; not everyone will want to donate online and you ll be pleasantly surprised by how many people will ask you for your sponsorship form. Gift Aid it Did you know that you can increase your donation without paying a penny more? Gift Aid is a government scheme that enables the University of Edinburgh Development Trust to reclaim any tax already paid on your donation; provided that you are a UK taxpayer and that you have paid enough income or capital gains tax to cover the tax on your gift. Gift Aid makes a big difference; please encourage your supporters to Gift Aid their donation. Further information regarding Gift Aid is available at Matched funding Many companies run a scheme where they will match any fundraising carried out by their staff pound for pound. Ask your Human Resources Department if your employer offers matched funding you could double your money. and Inspire others Shout about what you have done on Facebook, by and by post. Thank your donors and supporters, and make them want to follow in your inspirational footsteps. Send us photos of your events and we can help thank everyone, too.
