2 Everyone said he was just fine, but I knew my child was different. I knew he needed help. Autism. A small and often scary word with big meaning. For a parent raising a child facing this complex brain disorder, it often means an anxious and challenging journey. Caring for a child with autism can be a full-time job. It can mean unimaginable sacrifice. Parents often feel helpless, frustrated, overwhelmed, and even angry. Finding a way to meet the everyday demands of work, raising children and providing a child with autism the supports needed sometimes feels impossible. But there is hope. 2
3 Just when I was about to give up, I found Damar ABA. ABA Autism Services by Damar offers proven research-based interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families ensuring that children learn and grown to their full potential. Through immediate and intensive skill building treatments, parents discover their child s potential. Children gain confidence, purpose, and engage in meaningful interactions with the world. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is more than a theory. Our therapists use its principles and techniques to analyze behavior, including environmental influences and how behavior is reinforced. It s a proven effective therapeutic approach useful for shaping speech and language, appropriate social skills, activities of daily living, academic skills, decreasing problem behaviors, and more. Yes, ABA therapy can be intensive. Programs are covered under Medicaid and many Indiana-based insurance programs, and can range from as little as three hours to up to 40 hours per week. Our ABA therapists are skilled in ABA, first aid, CPR and Critical Moment Training, and have extensive experience treating children with severe behavioral needs. Damar s ABA therapists are supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) specializing in treating children with autism spectrum disorders. The BCBA assesses each child, designs a program to meet the child s individual needs, and supervises treatment directly on a weekly basis. Our program is developed around the needs of the child and of the family. A treatment package is created with the needs of not only the child, but also the family in mind. We understand the potential barriers of ensuring that a child receives all of the services he deserves, so we work with the family to break down those barriers. We do whatever it takes to make sure that every child gets the 3
4 We could not get services for my son until I learned that ABA by Damar also provides transportation. Damar s ABA treatment program begins with a free consultation, followed by a full assessment of each child. Observation time, parent interviews, and the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) are used to determine specific treatment goals in the following program areas: Speech Communication Sensory Needs Social Skills Play Skills Community Skills Vocational Skills Safety Skills Daily Living Skills Toilet Training Academics Cognitive Skills Problem Behaviors Treatment intensity depends on the needs of each child. Treatment may take place in the home, in the child s school, or in the clinic focusing on improving all socially significant behaviors. Clinic-based Services In-home Services Evening and Weekend Services Available Transportation Services Available In addition to or as a more appropriate alternative to ABA, Damar provides a full continuum of treatment and support services for children with autism and their families based on identified needs. Outpatient Evaluation Outpatient Treatment ABA Services Full-day Programming Parent Training Medication Evaluation Speech/Language Therapy Occupational Therapy Learn more about ABA by Damar by contacting Kristin McCoy, MS, BCBA at or kristinm@damar.org, or visit 6
