MSc in Bioinformatics Bioinformatics is an extremely dynamic field of interdisciplinary research. Advances in biological research over the last 50 years have revolutionised our understanding of the molecular basis for life - from the 1940s, when it was first realized that genetic information was encoded in DNA, to the present day, when we have sequenced the DNA for a number of species, including our own. This and other major breakthroughs have changed the science of biology for good. Just a few years ago, genes were studied one by one. Today, experimental technologies allow us to survey all the genes in an organism, as well as their activity levels and complex interactions. Intensive computing is necessary to handle and analyse the enormous amounts of data from such experiments, hence the field of bio informatics. Bioinformatics aims to solve biological problems using mathematical, statistical and computational techniques. Modern bio logical and medical research would be inconceivable without bioinformatics. The programme exposed me to new ways of learning, such as critical thinking, project-based group work and oral exams, experiences that will equip me for future employment. Georgia Karabelas, United States, is pursuing an MSc in Geography and Geoinformatics. 28 FACULTY OF SCIENCE

What attracted me to Geology-Geoscience at University of Copenhagen were the many options available. They enabled me to design a course specifically to fit all of my interests and objectives. My ultimate wish is to eventually work in the mining industry. I know this programme is a great platform to get me there. Catherine Crotty, from Ireland, is studying for an MSc in Geology-Geoscience. MSc in Geology-Geoscience 4.6 billion years! The history of the Earth spans a mind-boggling and fascinating length of time. As a graduate student in the two-year Geology-Geoscience MSc programme, you will become acquainted with this great story of the processes that are continually transforming our planet and shaping the basis of our existence. You will take part in research that investigates momentous periods of the Earth s history and our planet s most dramatic forces. Geology-Geoscience is a sensory science in which observation, experience and intuition complement one another and are combined with analyses and scientific deliberations. Geology-Geoscience is a programme that will challenge your imagination and intellect. You will combine geology with new findings and methods from biology, physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, ecology, climatology and archaeology, building an overall picture of the way the Earth has evolved and of the conditions under which we now live. If you seek answers to some of the Earth s greatest questions, an MSc in Geology-Geoscience is a good choice. If you would like to study for an MSc in Geology-Geoscience, you will find further details about admission requirements, the application process, tuition fees, etc. at UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN 29

MSc in Human Nutrition The Human Nutrition programme gives you a solid understanding of the principles, methods and tools of nutritional science. In the Human Nutrition programme, you will also gain a comprehensive knowledge of the importance of food for human health. Our society is highly focused on food and health. One of the reasons for this is that obesity has become a major problem for many people and, consequently, for society in the form of lifestyle diseases that are a burden on the healthcare system. In the course of the two-year MSc programme, you will learn about the conversion of energy and nutrients in the human body, the importance of nutrition in the various stages of life and the effects of nutrition on health and disease. The programme consists of compulsory, restricted elective and elective courses as well as thematic courses. Your elective courses may be chosen among courses offered at this Faculty or at the University in general, for instance International Nutrition and Health, but you can also choose courses at other universities in Denmark and abroad. If you would like to study for an MSc in Human Nutrition, you will find further details about admission requirements, the application process, tuition fees, etc. at www. science.ku.dk/human-nutrition I wanted to find a programme that could expand my knowledge of nutrition and provide a more holistic perspective of the field. The MSc here at University of Copenhagen does just that, with courses involving social and behavioural aspects of health and nutrition from a global understanding, and the tools necessary to critically analyse current research. Maggie Clark, from Canada, is pursuing an MSc in Human Nutrition. 30 FACULTY OF SCIENCE

I knew from back home that University of Copenhagen has a top ranking in the field of landscape architecture, so I jumped at the opportunity when it arose and enrolled in the programme. Copenhagen is the place to be when you study landscape architecture because the city is in front when it comes to new urban spaces and sustainable transformation projects. Fernando Gonzáles Teijeiro, from Spain, is a Landscape Architecture graduate. MSc in Landscape Architecture Are you dreaming of shaping the cities of tomorrow and the spaces where we spend most of our lives in a way that provides the best conditions for humans and nature? If so, an MSc in Landscape Architecture could be the right choice for you. Choosing to pursue an MSc degree in Landscape Architecture means choosing a creative academic degree. As a landscape architect you will combine knowledge about nature and ecology with design and an understanding of human experiences. During the two-year MSc programme in Landscape Architecture, you will learn about design, planning and management of the urban landscape on the basis of functional, aesthetic, social and biological considerations. And you will learn how to achieve holistic and sustainable urban and landscape development solutions. You will be part of an ambitious project-based educational environment combining high academic standards with intensive and creative studio work. You can choose to work with the strategic development of entire cities and regions or, for instance, design a schoolyard, a park or a garden or transform a former industrial area into a new and livable environment. When studying for an MSc in Landscape Architecture, you can choose to specialise in urban design, landscape planning and green space management. If you would like to study for an MSc in Landscape Architecture, you will find further details about admission requirements, the application process, tuition fees, etc. at www. science.ku.dk/landscape-architecture UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN 31

MSc in Mathematics Mathematics is an elegant way of solving problems. Mathematics is the science of structures in a broad sense. They may be numerical structures, spatial structures, colour structures, musical structures, logical structures or those of a thousand other things. Mathematicians study these structures as they form, stretch, bend, play and form connections between them. Mathematics is also an important school subject, systematically investigated in the speciali sation Didactics of Mathematics. You can pursue all of these approaches to mathematics as a graduate student at the University of Copenhagen. The MSc programme in Mathematics is a two-year programme. If you would like to study for an MSc in Mathematics, you will find further details about admission requirements, the application process, tuition fees, etc. at When you start looking, you find structures everywhere. Mathematics is the language used to express many of our deepest thoughts about the world. Mathematical applications can be used as a way to get inside structures. Or, you can become engrossed in the abstract game. 32 FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Mathematics-Economics is a fantastic programme. The level of abstraction is high and, obviously, the programme contains a lot of advanced maths, so we end up with excellent qualifications and really have something quite special to offer. Lea Nøhr Hjelmager Hansen, from Denmark, is a Mathematics-Economics graduate. MSc in Mathematics-Economics Do you find economics and finance fascinating? Are you interested in reading mathematics and using mathematical science in practice? In that case, an MSc in Mathematics-Economics is an obvious choice. As a graduate student of mathematical economics, you will approach and engage with economic modelling. Economic modelling often uses highly advanced mathematics and statistics for the managing and planning of production and traffic and for macro-economic models of the type used by central banks such as Danmarks Nationalbank and the European Central Bank. The MSc programme in Mathematics-Economics is a two-year programme. If you would like to study for an MSc in Mathematics-Economics, you will find further details about admission requirements, the application process, tuition fees, etc. at mathematics-economics UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN 33

MSc in Molecular Biomedicine The MSc programme in Molecular Biomedicine focuses on experimental work with the molecular biology of human disease. It is run jointly by the two faculties of science and health, both located on the same campus in Copenhagen. During the two-year programme, the main focus will be on your independent laboratory work with a research project that runs for the duration of the programme. In addition, both compulsory and elective courses must be taken. The courses run in parallel with the laboratory project. Upon completion of the course programme, you will have the necessary background for stringent scientific analysis of your own and others experimental work. As an MSc graduate in Molecular Biomedicine, you will be able to participate as an integral member of an international biomedical research team, and you will have had the best possible training to continue with PhD studies at world-leading universities and laboratories. Thus, graduates from the programme are also particularly well suited for jobs in in the biomedical industry, at hospitals and other research environments. If you would like to study for an MSc in Molecular Biomedicine, you will find further details about admission requirements, the application process, tuition fees, etc. at www. science.ku.dk/molecular-biomedicine I was surprised to discover the degree of respect that Molecular Biomedicine appears to command in Denmark. Indeed, the programme adds tremendous value when cited in job applications. And given the size of academic and industrial research here, graduates become natural candidates for many diverse opportunities. Darryl Johnson, from Ireland, is pursuing an MSc in Molecular Biomedicine. 34 FACULTY OF SCIENCE
