1 Process and Timeline for Review of grandfathered Core courses (approved by the Faculty Senate, April 11, 2014) At its Feb. 7, 2014 meeting, the Faculty Senate instructed the Core Curriculum Committee to 1. Suspend the March 1, 2014 deadline for blueprint submissions, 2. Revise the time-line and clarify the process for blueprint submissions, and 3. Clarify the status of grandfathered courses during that process. At its April 11, 2014 meeting, the Senate approved the revised process, time-line and on-going status of courses under review, as described below. Departments may submit blueprints for their grandfathered courses, and find more information on this process, at Overview of review process: 1. Unless a department or program decides to remove a course from the Core, all grandfathered courses will retain their grandfathered status throughout the review process. If circumstances extend the time frame beyond the suggested dates below, grandfathered status will be similarly extended. 2. Modified submission dates : As requested, the CCC has suspended the original March 1, 2014 deadline for submissions. The committee recommends that departments submit one or more proposals for grandfathered courses in any of the requirement areas on each of the following dates: Sept. 15, 2014 Dec Feb April Sept. 15, In addition, blueprints will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout this period. Reminders will be sent to departments prior to each submission date listed above. 4. In all cases, departments/programs will chose which courses they wish to submit proposals for during this time frame. As the table below indicates, some departments/programs have a very large number of grandfathered courses. In such cases, the department/program should determine how to proceed with this work. As departments/programs make these decisions, factors may include but certainly aren t limited to a) Which course already has the most clearly identified objectives? b) Which course does the department/program most want to create clearer objectives for? c) Which course does the department/program offer most often? If departments with large numbers of grandfathered courses are not able to submit blueprints for all of those courses by Sept. 2015, the time frame and grandfathered status will simply be extended for those courses not yet reviewed. The CCC intends that participation in the blueprint process will engage faculty with the Core learning outcomes. This engagement may lead to the consideration of modification of those outcomes, where appropriate. If this occurs, the CCC will facilitate discussion of these issues with interested faculty. As indicated in its regular reports to the Senate on this process, the CCC believes this approach is consistent with best practices nationally and at USM. It is sensitive to differing degrees of department and program familiarity with the Core outcomes. Without sacrificing rigor, it is responsive to department requests for a more streamlined approach to course review. In addition, the blue print

2 process was noted positively in USM s recent NEASC progress report, especially its alignment with USM s program review process. Finally, as modified, the process involves a more realistic time frame for participation, and an important clarification of the status of grandfathered courses going forward.
