1 Electrical Fitter A competent Electrical Fitter is expected to: 1. Work safely in teams and apply interpersonal skills in electrical engineering 2. Identify risks arising from electrical engineering activities and their environment 3. Apply the under pinning knowledge to solve problems in practical activities 4. Install, connect and commission an installation in accordance with relevant local and the IEE regulations 5. Interpret installation drawings, data and instruction manuals 6. Inspect and test electrical installation 7. Select the proper tools and instruments 8. Communicate in written, oral and graphical forms 9. Understand the function of electrical switchgear, accessories, components, machines and motors 10. Select the appropriate working methods and tools 11. Communicate effectively within a working group and use acceptable interpersonal skills

2 The candidate applying to be trade tested for the Certificate of Competence should be in possession of the majority of the following knowledge, competencies & skills: Health & Safety: Apply the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment Use correctly safety equipment to carry out tasks Interpret Safety Signs designated Understand the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Perform Basic Risk Assessment before performing works Apply work procedures to minimize as much as possible incidents from occurring Reports hazards to the responsible officer Health & Safety (continued) Apply First Aid treatments were applicable Apply safety regulations applicable to electrical engineering task Apply Occupational, Health & Safety Regulations, Electricity Supply Regulations (ESR), IEE Regulations (BS 7671) Be aware and apply, were applicable, local standards issued by the Malta Standards Authority or equivalent Demonstrate the underpinning knowledge of: Identify different types of electrical components Install and connect different types of electrical components Be familiar with DC and AC systems Maintain DC and AC systems Be familiar with different type of earthing systems Be familiar with different methods of protection

3 Designing an Electrical Installation: Participate in onsite surveys for establishment the main requirements Be able to establish priorities of the requirements Be familiar with different systems of installations Be able to select the correct system/systems Be able to establish the demand current Be able to establish the number of circuits required Be able to establish the current ratings of cables and switchgear Be able to prepare working drawings Be able to prepare Bill of Quantities (BOQ) Be familiar with purchasing procedures Be able to select any special tools required Be able to prepare Bar Charts Be familiar with different types of working processes Be able to select and use the proper type of tools Upkeep of tools Be able to establish strengths and weaknesses of the design process Inspection, testing and commissioning of Electrical Installations and equipment in buildings and structures: Be able to establish and carryout methods of inspection Apply appropriate code of practice and regulations Be able to prepare documents for inspection and testing Be familiar with different types of testing equipment Be able to select the suitable testing equipment Be familiar with different types of testing processes Be able to establish commissioning procedures

4 Fault Diagnosis and Rectification of Electrical Installations in buildings and structures: Be able to distinguish between the cause and effect of an electrical fault Be able to establish a fault finding procedure Select suitable tools and instruments to rectify faults Be able to interpret manuals Be familiar with methods of fault rectifications Be familiar with methods of restoration following fault repairs Be familiar with methods of functioning following fault repairs Demonstrate Interpersonal Skills: Be able to listening and comprehend Be able to respond positively to feedback Be able to achieving results by himself or with other people Be able to avoid conflicts and resolves them if applicable Be able to participate constructively in teams Be able to provide constructive feedback

5 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Electrical Fitter 1. Introduction The following is a detailed description of the assessment criteria to be adopted by the Trade Testing Board (TTB) to reach a final decision on the award of the Certificate of competence. 2. Trade Test The trade test is made up of the following components: 1. The Written 2. The Practical 3. The Interview

6 The Board has agreed on the sequence of the test and the markings allocated to each specific component as indicated below: Component Mark Pass Mark Written % Interview % Practical % The candidate must pass all components in order to be awarded the Certificate of Competence.

7 The Written Component The topics of the written test may include the following: Technical report writing Electrical regulations Health and Safety Rotating machines Transformers Electrical installations Motor control gear Cables Standby power supplies Lightning protection Electronics Instruments Embedded generation

8 The Interview Component All candidates will be called to attend an interview during which the Board will assess the proficiency and competence of the candidate related to the field of electrical engineering. The candidate will be assessed on the following: Attitude and aptitude Practical experience and knowledge gained throughout their work experience. Ability to answer questions related to the above listed topics Asses underpinning knowledge Ability to elaborate in their field of experience.

9 The Practical Component The board will normally setup a practical test to assess knowledge, skills and attitudes in the field of electrical engineering. The candidate may be asked to assemble, install, test or repair of electrical equipment and accessories. The board expects the candidates to be familiar with typical workshop tools and testing apparatus.
