1 College Scholarship Application High School Seniors April 13, 2015 Dear Applicant, The FUMC Scholarship Committee is taking this opportunity to invite students to apply for the College Scholarships offered by First United Methodist church. This year scholarships will be available from the following funds: Dr. Walton Garrett, Dollars for Scholars and Mary Ann & Charlie Way. The application for these scholarships is attached. Awards will be divided into two payments (one-half of the awards to be given in August and the other half in December). If you have questions or concerns, please contact the church office and someone in the office will forward your question/concern to the committee. 2 Available Scholarships High School Seniors Due Wednesday April 29, 2015 Garrett Scholarships Thanks to a generous endowment by Dr. Walton Garrett, there are two $ scholarships open for applications from young students with a proven need. Congregational Scholarship(s) This award is open to any college student with a proven need who meets the criteria on the application. The amount of the scholarship will be determined based on need and due to limited funding, not to exceed $1, Way Scholarship(s) Thanks to a generous endowment in honor of Charlie and Mary Ann Way, scholarships are available. Charlie and Mary Ann served as the Pancake chairpersons for over 50 years and the current Pancake committee along with the blessing of the church administration established an endowed scholarship to be given based on performance of the endowed fund. Last year two $500 scholarships were awarded. Preference will be given to someone who is or wants to be involved in the mission field. This award is open to any college student with a proven need who meets the criteria on the application. The amount of the scholarship will be determined based on need. Page 2 of 7

3 College Scholarship Application Form First United Methodist Church, Waynesville, NC Name High School Eligibility To be eligible, a student must be an active member/attendee of Waynesville First United Methodist Church, and planning to attend an approved secondary education program (technical/community college, junior college, four-year institution or post-graduate studies), and have a 3.0 or better GPA. Scholarship Award Payment of scholarship awards will be made at the beginning of the school year or at the beginning of each semester. Checks will be made payable to the school for student's account and will be forwarded to the financial aid office. A copy of the previous semester grades is required to be submitted to the Church Office before further payment will occur. Below is the criteria considered for award, not necessarily in this order: Financial Need - Academic Achievement - Church Involvement Youth (Garrett Scholarship only) Application Procedure 1. Complete the enclosed application. All sections must be completed. Any incomplete applications will not be considered for award. 2. Provide three letters of reference, one of which must be from a congregational member or staff person. 3. COPIES OF SAT/ACT SCORES HIGHEST VERBAL, MATH AND WRITING MUST BE INCLUDED. 4. To be considered for any scholarship a copy of the FAFSA form including the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) OR the FIRST page of your parents or guardians tax return must be included. Please put this information in a sealed envelope and write the students name across the seal. 5. Include a transcript from you high school. Page 3 of 7
