1 Welcome to the Occupational Therapy Assistant program. You have begun the exploration of a profession dedicated to encouraging and restoring individuals with delay or disability to full participation in their daily activities.
2 This online session will provide you with information to acquaint you with this area of health science and to begin preparation for the requirements and process necessary for admission. The session will also provide you with information on program progression, graduation and certification. You are encouraged to continue through this Information Session. Upon completion, consider making a difference in the lives of others through successful completion of this program and eventual practice in the profession of occupational therapy.

4 The occupational therapy assistant student learns to promote, restore and maintain purposeful and meaningful activities to those who have experienced delay, illness or disability. Your interest in this program will hopefully encourage you to apply for admission anticipating license to practice occupational therapy after two years.
5 Occupational therapy assistants work in collaboration with an occupational therapist who belongs to a healthcare team consisting of a MD, RN, social worker, physical therapist, speech therapist and others. This licensed therapist supervises the OTA in such work related tasks as interviewing clients, assisting with physical, cognitive/perceptual, mental, psychosocial and developmental evaluations and enabling clients to engage in everyday activities after they had experienced injury or illness. The main goal of the occupational therapy practitioner (both the therapist and the assistant) is to promote independence and well being.
6 Occupational therapists and assistants work with individuals from infants through older adults. Practitioners may choose to specialize in pediatrics and practice in a variety of setting such as hospital, outpatient clinics, community based program, schools, and home health.
7 OT practitioners may also work in the area of mental health and practice in a variety of settings such as hospital, outpatient clinics, community based program, schools, and home health.
8 OT practitioners may also work with the elderly population and practice in a variety of settings such as hospital, outpatient clinics, community based program, schools, and home health.
9 These are the most current employment projections for the field or Occupational Therapy.
10 As illustrated on the slide, OT practitioners are numerous and work in a wide variety of settings. From newborn care and early childhood intervention to elderly care in nursing homes, OT practitioners offer many individuals the opportunity to develop or return to those activities most purposeful and meaningful to their lives.

13 We are fortunate to have among our OTA faculty occupational therapist educators with many years of experience in both practice and education. Students will be taught by staff faculty as well as those therapists from the community who present special lectures and workshops throughout the program.
15 The application process will be clearly outlined with step by step instructions. This application process is posted on-line on the OTA website.
16 If you are thinking about applying these are 2 key items to take action on quickly. The pre-requisite requirements include: English Comp I Introduction to Psychology and it must be taken within the last 5 years Introduction to A&P and it must be taken within the last 5 years Human Growth and Development and it must be taken with the last 5 years. All immunizations must be complete as noted on the website.
17 DO NOT submit the criminal background check or drug screen until notified by the OTA program admission committee.
19 Students will be expected to use technology to meet learning objectives. Assignments must be typed. The Blackboard Learning Management System is used for submission of online assignments, discussion forums, blogs and for other interactive tools may be used to meet the course learning objectives.

21 It is imperative that attention be paid to this requirement. If you have any concern about something in your criminal background, contact the Texas state licensing board for OT practitioners and contact the National Certification Board for OT practitioners as soon as possible.

24 The application process, viewed on the OTA website, takes you through a STEP by STEP progression in order to submit a complete packet to the OTA Admissions Committee. Remember, admission to ACC does not guarantee admission to the OTA program. Immunization documentation is vital for a complete admission packet. Make sure your nurse or doctor initials, signs or stamps EACH immunization requirement on the line designated for that immunization. All immunizations must be completed and included with the application packet. As stated above DO NOT submit the criminal background check until notified by the OTA program admission committee.
25 The faculty want to see every student progress from semester to semester and meet all the necessary requirements for success.
26 OTA students must pass all program courses with a 73% (C) or better in order to advance to the next program semester. All learning objectives must be met. All technical standards must be upheld.
27 This is a steady, sequential course of study. Once enrolled in the program, students progress from one semester to another uninterrupted for two years including summers. A sample weekly schedule is presented for your benefit. All students MUST pass ALL OT courses with a 73 C or better to progress to the next level of study.

29 In addition to the graduation requirements contained in the ACC College Catalog (See Graduation ), the prospective graduate must: 1. Complete all courses listed in the official degree plan with a minimum grade of C. 2. Upon admission to the program, have official transcripts from all other colleges sent to ACC Admissions and Records for evaluation, if student has taken courses at other colleges that apply to the degree plan. 3. Apply for graduation in accordance with college policies.
30 A felony conviction may affect a graduate s ability to sit for the NBCOT Certification Examination or attain state licensure. See NBCOT website for specific eligibility requirements. If you have any questions or concerns about something that is on your criminal background, please take action now and contact the Texas OT licensing board and the National OT certification board.
31 ACOTE stands for the Accrediting Council of Occupational Therapy Education; the educational branch of the American Occupational Therapy Association. SACs stands for the Southern Association of Colleges which is the accrediting body of Austin Community College.

33 Students often ask if they will be able to work full time and attend OTA classes. This is an intense, rigorous two year program and should be the student s main focus. It is strongly recommended that students work a part time schedule if necessary. Again, ACC s financial aid office is available for consultation throughout the program.
34 Success in the OTA program usually carries over to OT practice. Students with mature, responsible, work ethics apply those characteristics not only to our program but to their clinical fieldwork experiences and their entry level work positions. The educational experiences in the OTA program promotes a strong sense of self awareness and develops clinical reasoning skills necessary for sound decision making. Effective communication both verbal and non-verbal is essential and the use of the English language is a critical part of communicating with patients, families, colleagues and other healthcare professions.
