3 Description of the Intellectual Property Law Program ( ) Copyrights & Related Rights (3 A general study of the concept of copyrights, kinds of protected works, exceptions to copyrights, terms of their protection, international agreements related to copyright protection. As well as identification of related rights, types, terms of protection and international agreement linked to them, followed by an analytical study of topics such as exceptions on copyright and related rights, licensing for using copyrights, the protection of copyrights and related rights under the electronic environment. ( ) Trademarks & Geographical Indications (3 A general study of the following subjects: identification of trademarks, their functions, the way of acquiring and protecting trademarks, the procedures of registering trademarks and canceling them, as well as identifying geographical indications, and the ways of their protection, following by an analytical study of the topics, such as the protection of well-known trademarks, licensing and royalties on trademarks, and the international registration system for trademarks and geographical indications. ( ) Industrial Property Rights (3 A general study of identifying patents, layout designs of integrated circuits and new plants as well as their functions, the ways of protecting them, and international agreement related to these rights. As well as an analytical study of certain topics, such as licensing for using these rights, the international registration systems for patents and layout designs of integrated circuits, etc. ( ) Industrial Designs and Models (3 A general study of identifying industrial designs and models, ways of protecting them, and the rights granted to the holders of the protected industrial designs and models. As well as international agreements related to their protection, followed by an analytical study of certain topics, such as the exploitation of industrial designs and models, the international registration system for industrial designs and models, etc. ( ) International Aspects of Intellectual Property Laws (3 A general study of the linkage between IPRs and the global economy, and the role of international organizations in structuring and organizing IPRs, such as WIPO and WTO. Followed by an analytical study of certain topics such as the legal status of international IPRs agreements under national law. ( ) Unfair Competition (3 Identification of unfair competition, its relation to IPRs, legal procedures resulted from unfair competition acts, ways of oppositing these acts, and related international agreements. As well as an analytical study of certain topics, such as the
4 application of unfair competition acts on trademarks, patents, the new types of unfair competition acts, etc. ( ) Licensing in Intellectual Property (3 A general study covers types of licensing in most of IPRs, the rights and obligations of the licensing parties, control of anti-competitive practices in contractual licenses according to national laws and international agreements. Followed by an analytical and comparative study of one of certain topics, such as licensing of IPRs as computer programs, licensing of the pharmaceutical sector and contractual and compulsory licensing for some types of IPRs, etc. ( ) Electronic Commerce and Intellectual Property (3 A general study of identifying electronic commerce and its impact on IPRs, such as copyright and related rights, trademarks, and the protection of domain names. As well as ways of protecting IPRs in the digital environment, and legal issues raised from protecting IPRs in this environment. ( ) The Enforcements of Intellectual Property Rights (3 A general study of the types of enforcements of intellectual property rights in national laws and international agreement, followed by analytical study of topics relating to the enforcements of IPRs, such as civil procedures and remedies, criminal procedures, provisional measures, border procedures, etc. ( ) Collective Management of Copyright & Related Rights (3 A general study of identifying the legal concept of collective management, its role in protecting copyrights and related rights as well as results of collective managements in some countries. In addition, an analytical study of certain topics, such as working methods of collective management organizations, and the role of collective management in protecting copyrights and related rights in the digital environment.
5 ( ) Selected Topics in Intellectual Property Law (3 Selected topics in Intellectual Property Law and their applications, given by members of staff, visiting professors, and those specialized in fields related to intellectual Property Law. ( ) Alternative Disputes Resolution to Intellectual Property A general study of the theories and ways related to disputes resolution of intellectual property without going to court, especially through mediation and arbitration. As well as the role played by WIPO for resolving IPR disputes, followed by an analytical study of certain topics such as types of mediation and the extent of its binding power on disputing parties, arbitration and the execution of arbitration awards according to national laws, and the resolution of domain names disputes by alternative dispute resolution. ( ) Trade Secrets (3 A general study of identifying a trade secret and its importance, the owner of a trade secret, and the conditions that should exist for protecting a trade secret. The course also includes a detailed explanation of non-disclosure agreements and noncompete agreements. All of the above are explained under the national laws and international agreements. ( ) International Trade Law and Practice (3 This course will study the legal framework governing international economic relations and global business. Students will gain an understanding of why and how national and international institutions regulate world trade. Particular attention will be paid to the evolution of international trade regulation and the pressures on existing regulatory concepts and principles. Topics will include WTO, the protection of intellectual property, the promotion of international services transactions, dispute resolution and free trade agreements. (3
