Provides services to the entire scientific community through its Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructures (ICTS) management activities. The centers and institutes are grouped into eight large Scientific-Technology Areas based on the research that they do: Humanities and Social Sciences, Biology and Biomedicine, Natural Resources, Agricultural Sciences, Physical Science and Technologies, Materials Science and Technology, Food Science and Technology and Chemical Technology. Some of these institutions are the Juan Carlos station in the Antarctic, the Oceanography Research Vessel Hespérides, the Oceanography Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa, the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, the Doñana Biological Reserve as well as the Spanish part of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Institute Max von Laue-Langevin. Among other things, it will promote collaboration among Spanish and foreign entities, provide scientific and technical advice, facilitate the transfer of results to the business sector, contribute to the creation of technology-based companies, and train specialized personnel. Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence VPH NoE; Spanish Nanomedicine Platform; Barcelona Science Park (PCB); NanoSpain, etc. The CIBER-BBN scientific areas are: Bioengineering and biomedical imaging, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, and Nanomedicine. The Centre's research is oriented to the development of preventative, diagnostic and follow-up systems and to technologies relating to specific therapies such as Regenerate Medicine and Nanotherapies. These are all carried out by 40 research groups around the country. Thanks to the network of CIBER-BNN centers, they have the best technology available for biomolecule production, biomaterial and nanoparticle production; tissue, biomaterials and surface characterization; bioimaging and high performance computing, among others. Promote health research of a basic nature as well as oriented to clinical aspects (Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine). It will encourage research of society especially the productive sector and will promote sharing results and collaborate on educational activities. 4 Oryzon Genomics Health Technology 63 in million in 2008 Number of s and Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Barcelona. Various types of alliances for carrying out different s, among them the CENIT Oncnosis. Biomedicine: targeting with particular intensity the identification of biomarkers found in serious illnesses such as those in cancers and neurodegeneration. Agrobiotechnology carries out s involving plants and yeasts. The s can be grouped into two categories: -Projects based on the production of new varieties with improved properties with respect to nutrition or production qualities, and the production of certain compounds from plants or yeasts such a biofuels. -Projects aimed at developing high performance food analysis tools in search of pathogens and microorganisms of interest. In order to carry out the research s, the company has a technology platform that integrates the Genomics of Proteomics Division and the Bioinformatics Division. The Genomics Division works with the AGILENT platform and is entirely equipped to work with DNA micromatrices. It also has an AGILENT BioAnalyzer for analyzing the quality of RNA as well as the quality of the labels. The high processing capacity is owed to the AGILENT G2565BA scanner with automatic feed. In addition, they have bioinformatic analysis methods available for the results obtained from the DNA micromatrices. It will contribute experience in developing diagnostic solutions and prognoses for oncological and neurodegenerative diseases. On the other hand, it will strengthen the biomedicine and agrobiotechnology areas of research. Finally, its support for patent development will be particularly important. 5 Principia Technology Group Health Technology Number of s and Spin-off of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Nano initiatives with regional Spanish governments (autonomies). Collaboration with an MIT professor Devoted to the creation, development and research of high tech companies. The company designs tools for improving the skills needed to carry out technology initiatives and provides them to private firms. It has three Innovation Centres in Spain located in Valencia, Navarre, and Andalusia (in construction). These technology centres have an entrepreneurial culture and their objective is the promotion and development of high tech, product and service companies. It will help build solid nanotechnology R&D+i at the Campus. It will also facilitate connecting with key sectors such as automotive, biomedicine and agrifood. 8 Advanced Electron Microscopy Facilities (ICTS) Materials and Technology for Quality of Life Number of s and Ministry of Science and Innovation, Government of Aragon, University of Zaragoza With the new laboratory it will be able to do specific technology development such as data processing devices, biosensors for detecting viruses and proteins, new materials thanks to the microscopic observation and manipulation that will advance areas like pharmacology, biomedicine, biotechnology, electronics, nanotechnology, agrifood, and other applications in economic sectors such as renewable energies and the automotive industry. This institution pertains to the Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructures (ICTS) Map, high value add experimental tools for the scientific, technological and industrial community and for government. They are unique in Spain for their content and offering. It houses the Titan Microscope, one of the highest resolution microscopes in the world, enabling researchers to observe the most miniscule materials and analyze their properties. It is the most advanced micrometric studies facility in the country. It will offer the most advanced equipment and techniques in electron and local probe microscopy and is the discipline's most important facility in Spain. 9 Materials Science Institute of Aragon (ICMA) Materials and Technology for Quality of Life 322 in 2008 Number of s and Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Zaragoza (UZ) There are collaborations with: Rioja chemical synthesis Group and the ILL neutron CRG The primary objective of the institute is to be a leading centre in two areas, materials science and technology and chemical science and technology, raising the scientific and technical level of its members and departments. It has several units which support the research process: technical office, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermal analysis, confocal microscopy and interferometry. On the one hand, it will drive the area of Materials Science and Technology (solids spectroscopy, low temperature solid state physics, magnetism of solids). And on the other, the Chemical area (chemistry of organometallic compounds, coordination chemistry). 10 University Research Institute of Homogeneous Catalysts (IUCH) Materials and Technology for Quality of Life 50 people in 2009 Number of s and 31 research s in 2009 University of Zaragoza, Government of Aragon Collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Innovation, MULTICAT. IUCH researchers commonly form research groups by collaborating with CSIC researchers assigned to the ICMA. The institute has three general lines of activity. The first for training, which organizes courses and seminars regarding current aspects of Supported and Homogeneous Catalysts. Second, it provides consulting and assistance to companies in different fields relating to its specialty. Finally, it carries out research s at its facilities, s targeting the resolution of problems raised by companies or external agencies with which it has previously made an agreement. The subject of said s generally focuses in areas where IUCH research personnel have skills, as well as equipment. IUCH Science personnel use the scientific infrastructure in the Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Departments at the University of Zaragoza, as well as the scientific equipment available at the Materials Science Institute of Aragon (UZ-CSIC). In addition, this scientific infrastructure is complemented with specific equipment needed for catalytic reaction research and acquired by IUCH: synthesis and catalysis equipment, spectroscopic equipment, chromatographic analysis equipment. It will drive new basic and applied science research initiatives; develop new catalysis concepts, optimize procedures and prepare new products with better properties. 11 University Research Institute of Engineering(I3A) Materials and Technology for Quality of Life 500 people in 2009 Number of s and 350 s in It has 156 University of Zaragoza, Government of Aragon Collaborates with the University of Zaragoza, the Aragon Government, the Engineering Institute of Aragon, Aragon Parkinson's Association, private companies (Siemens,...), etc. Currently I3A groups its research activities in three major strategic Divisions of research: Biomedical engineering: engineering techniques for improving health Environmental intelligence: technologies for the knowledge society Process and recycling: Engineering to improve the environment The institute is organized in strategic divisions (biomedical engineering, environmental intelligence and processes and recycling), relevant lines of research (automotive, induction, discrete distributed systems), groups (which include specific research groups as well as laboratories) and researchers. It will have researchers and equipment specialized in biomedical engineering, ambient intelligence, and processes and recycling. 12 Biomedical Research Centre of Aragon (CIBA) Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) Number of s and Aragon Institute of Health Sciences CIBA intends to become a leading centre for medical research in Spain as well as one of the basic work support platforms for hundreds of researchers in a wide number of biomedicine disciplines. Its main areas of work will be stem cells, nanoscience, clinical studies of different diseases, and regenerative medicine. This research space will be divided in three parts: management, research support, and a third part dedicated to basic and clinical research groups. The centre will have five floors with a total of 4,500 square meters of usable space. It will include a transgenesis unit, magnetic resonance equipment, four microsurgery operating rooms an a laboratory, cultivation and separation of cells, nucleic acids, proteomics, anatomical pathology, microscopy, as well as areas for basic and clinical research groups, and more. It will be a support component for knowledge transfer and interaction between groups. In addition, it is strategically located in the corridor formed by the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital, the Medical Faculty of the University of Zaragoza, and the Miguel Servet Hospital. 13 Biomedical Research Centre of La Rioja (CIBIR) Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) 44 people Number of s and Government of La Rioja Autonomous Community through the Health Council. Collaboration with Araclon Biotech for developing new techniques to diagnose and new therapies to treat neurodegenerative diseases. CIBER intends to carry out translational research founded in excellence, exemplifying dedication to progress and improvement in the quality of Public Health System care, by providing advanced support services which synergistically integrate research activities with care processes having high demand for technology. The research areas are: infectious diseases, oncology, molecular biology and neurodegenerative diseases. It has two technology platforms. One is the Bioinformatics platform whose function is to organize large quantities of biological information making it accessible and useful, and the other is the genomics platform which will provide genomic analysis services (ultrasequencing and transcriptomics) for CIBER researchers in La Rioja Autonomous Community and for any other external researchers that need them. CIBIR also has close relations with San Pedro Hospital, the leading hospital in La Rioja Community, which are essential for developing regional health science R&D policy. 14 Medical Technology Care Complex of Navarre Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) Number of s and Government of Navarre through the Health Department It is a non-hospital infrastructure capable of performing certain health care procedures in a minimum amount of time. As such all of the tests and consultations necessary to reach a diagnosis or determine a treatment are done simultaneously in one 24-hour care procedure. The centre has three areas of management (administrative, processes, and innovationquality) and includes two centers: the Centro de Alta Resolucion (concentrated care) and the Technology Centre. The first is a Specialized Care centre accommodating external consultations, special examinations and out-patient surgery. Its objective is to complete a process in one visit. The second, the Technology Centre, provides technology to the aforementioned as well as to the entire Navarre health network. It is even integrated to the earlier service. Most processes also require diagnostic tests that are done at the technology Centre. It will encourage development of medical technology adapted to offered health care. 15 Aragon Institute of Health Sciences (I+CS) Number of s and Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) 83 people make up the Central Services of the Aragon Institute of Health Sciences Department of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Government of Aragon SALUD- Aragon Health Services, University of Zaragoza, ISCIII-Carlos III Institute of Health, etc. This is the centre responsible for research and knowledge transfer in the area of Biomedicine and Health Sciences (basic, clinical and public health) for the Aragon public health system. It offers its resources to researchers, health professionals and private and public institutions that want to carry out biomedicine research s. Among the services offered are administrative/logistical support to the Aragon Research Clinic Ethics Committee, continuous education, participation of researchers and research groups in coordinated networks, management of the "Organized Training of Skills Used in the Health System" program, etc. Research Transversal Support Units (UATI) are facilities that integrate infrastructures and large equipment dedicated to specialized techniques. They are staffed with highly qualified personnel in continuous training that guarantee it operates well and offers tailored assistance and technical and scientific support. Some of the units are: Genomics, Proteomics, Cell separation, Cell cultivation, Anatomical Pathology, Microscopy and imaging, Transgenesis, and Functional valuation. 16 Medical Imaging Facilities (ICTS) Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) Number of s and Department of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science It will be dedicated exclusively to research It will have three lines of activity. First of all it will be a leading centre with its own scientific program. Second, it will offer its infrastructure and equipment to external research groups. Finally, it will be a leading centre for standardizing and accrediting procedures and technologies, where the most innovative Medical Imaging techniques will be evaluated. This institution pertains to the Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructures (ICTS) Map. It will have the equipment necessary to develop technologies for capturing images of basic cellular processes in living organisms, which will be used for diagnosis and follow-up of illnesses. Molecular imaging implies the merging of the most modern molecular and cellular biology techniques with the latest developments in non-invasive technology. The equipment at this facility will include computerized X-ray tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance, positron emission tomography, cyclotron, and a radio synthesis laboratory, among others. It will carry out research and provide services to multidiscipline research teams and pharmaceutical and medical imaging companies. 17 University Research Institute of BioComputation and Physics of Complex Systems (BIFI) Number of s and 150 people Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) University of Zaragoza Collaborates with the CIEMAT National Fusion Laboratory on grid applications related to the simulation of nuclear fusion reactors. Research at BIFI is organized in different areas of interest: complex materials and basic physics, quantum transport, quantum computing, computing and supercomputing, complex networks and society, physics of biological systems, protein-ligand interaction, proteinprotein interaction, molecular and crystallographic biology, and protein-dna interaction and genetic regulation. BIFI also organizes different activities: conferences, seminars... For the institute to carry out its research it has a Supercomputation Laboratory, a Biochemistry Laboratory, a Crystallography Laboratory, a 3D Viewing Room, and a videoconferencing room. At the end of 2006 the University of Zaragoza became part of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) with CAESARAUGUSTA, one of the seven supercomputers spread around the country. Its centre is at Mare Nostrum (BSC-CNS) which is connected via a high speed network. Its intent is to respond to the growing computing needs of research in Spain. BIFI is responsible for managing it. 18 University Research Institute of Mathematics and Applications (IUMA) Number of s and 80 active employees Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) Department of Science, Technology and University of the Government of Aragon Dept. of Applied Mathematics, of mathematics, of Statistical Methods, of Theoretical Physics of UZ, the Garcia Galdeano Mathematics Seminary, Science Direct, MathScinet, etc. Its two main activities are research into mathematics and its applications, and to promote Mathematics with Society in general, with Secondary school students, and with the business world. To do this, it currently has 10 research groups recognized by the Government of Aragon. It also organizes conferences, seminars, courses, etc. IUMA is located on the first floor of the Science Faculty, Mathematics building. It shares offices, meeting rooms, and conference rooms with the Mathematics Departments located in the same building. It will provide mathematics research support in four areas: algebra and geometry, mathematical and numerical analysis, optimization and simulation, and dynamic systems. 19 Lleida Biomedical Research Institute (IRBLleida) Health Technology (Materials and Technology for Quality of Life) 221 researchers in 2008 Number of s and 30 active s in University of Lleida (UDL), the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) and the Dr. Pifarré Foundation. University of Lleida, Catalan Health Institute, Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital, Santa Maria Hospital Committed to advancing biomedical research as a means for improving health of the population and facilitating optimum care in cases of disease. Interaction between professionals at the University of Lleida and ICS should help facilitate this task. The institute focuses on six areas of research: stress in biological systems, neuroscience, clinical medicine, cellular and molecular models of human pathologies, experimental medicine and therapy, as well as being open to other research. The research space is spread between the UDL Medical Faculty, the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital, and the Santa Maria Hospital. An 8,000 m 2 building on the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital grounds is currently in phase.
