How to use your analog easy read hearing aid Also available: How to use your digital hearing aid Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 2012

When you first get your hearing aid: Practise using the controls Practise putting it in your ear Make sure it fits properly 1 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 2

Start wearing it for 1 hour only, 2 times a day Start wearing it in quiet places 3 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 4

Try talking to 1 person in a quiet place Next: Try talking in a small group 5 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 6

Wear your hearing aid outside Do not have the volume too loud 7 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 8

Next: It will be hard to hear everything at first but it will get easier. Try using your hearing aid somewhere noisy 9 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 10

If you still can not get used to your hearing aid, speak to someone at the hospital and they will help you. When you need to change the batteries in your hearing aid you can: Get them free from any hospital that has a battery service 11 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 12

Get them free from some health centres If your hearing aid does not work properly: Check it is switched on properly Buy them from a chemist Check that the volume is on and that it is not too high Check that the battery is in right Check that it is not switched to the T setting by accident 13 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 14

The T setting lets deaf people use Loop Systems to make it easier to hear sounds more clearly and cut down background noise. You can get loop systems for your home so that you can pick up sound from your TV, hi-fi or radio. If there is no loop system switch off the T setting. Check that your batterries are in the right way. This symbol means there is a loop systemin the room. 15 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 16

Try a new battery new Check the hearing aid fits properly in your ear Ask your doctor to check if you have too much wax in your ears 17 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 18

How How to use to use your your hearing aid aid How to use your analog hearing aid Some hearing aids have tubes. If your hearing aid still does not work someone at the hospital can help you. Check the tube is not blocked Check the tube is not squashed or split 19 Designed and illustrated by CHANGE 20
