3 Carmen Mendoza Director Sandra Bestraten Director Raquel Colacios Coordinator Presentation of Objectives The ever-growing impact of climate change, military conflicts, rapid urbanization and economic crises present a clear need and opportunity for qualified professionals in both developed and developing countries. This Master degree provides students with the necessary theoretical and methodological background in order to develop an interdisciplinary approach and manage projects in cooperation and sustainable development ranging from the urban to the architectural scale. Professionals involved in these areas need to understand that their role in the complex system of international cooperation is to seek holistic solutions that integrate interdisciplinary knowledge and citizen participation. It is essential to understand the physical, social and cultural substrate of the cities or territories in which we are going to intervene and analyze the context at all scales throughout the intervention process in order to establish a critical approach and proposals in accordance to their urban legacies. The Master degree deals with three main topics: international cooperation, sustainable development, and emergency architecture. The programme includes courses that will help implement and complete this necessary multidisciplinary approach with alternative planning, urban and architectural strategies that promote social cohesion. Students will be introduced to different contexts and situations so as to acquire the proper skills to develop a critical analysis and management capacity of complex problems. They will learn to maximize human resources to deal with and support local actors in post-disaster scenarios and tackle urban upgrading strategies in both developed and developing countries. This Masters Programme forms part of the Erasmus Mundus European cooperation programme, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious programmes in the world. The Mundus Urbano programme is a joint European Masters degree programme offered by the following universities: Technische Universität Darmstadt, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Université Pierre-Mendès-France Grenoble and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona. 5

4 Curriculum This programme is aimed at university graduates from the following areas: Architecture, Urbanism, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Sociology Urban Design, Engineering, Enviromental Studies and International Cooperation. The course is taught in English. All the following information can also be viewed on our online brochure. TERM 1: CRITERIA 29,5 ECTS. Students will attend full day classes. This module is designed to provide a full and multidisciplinary understanding of project management and sustainable urban development policies and the economic and social policies that influence urban regeneration in developing countries, northern countries and countries undergoing reconstruction. The aim is for students to acquire an integral understanding of all the processes involved in urban regeneration based on practical knowledge of complex local situations. TERM 2: FIELD TRIP & INTERNSHIP 15 ECTS. Includes a trip outside Europe to see places with developing needs or places that need future responses and settlement reconstruction after crises. Students participate in an internship with a company or institution working in an area of international cooperation. Syllabus and Subjects TERM 1: CRITERIA - Oct Jan 2014 Subject 1: Global Identity and Development Subject 2: Urbanism and housing in developing context Subject 3: Design Tools TERM 2: FIELD TRIP & INTERNSHIP - April - May - June 2014 The most practical part of the course will take place during the FIELD TRIP & INTERNSHIP. Subject 4: Field trip, Internship TERM 3: STUDIO PROJECT 15,5 ECTS. Students start their individual research projects under the supervision of a tutor. The project will focus on specific post-emergency scenarios, urban development, prototypes and disaster management. This part of the programme includes lectures on practical matters and methodology to assist students in developing their studio projects. TERM 3: STUDIO PROJECT - February - March and July 2014 The thesis will be prepared in Term 3. Subject 5: Studio Project (Master Thesis) 6 7

5 Faculty Methodology and Evaluation Internships The Master s programme is taught by a prestigious group of specialized, interdisciplinary professors with proven track records and with the collaboration of NGOs and other institutions that participate actively in the field of international cooperation. The academic staff is also composed of researchers from the four universities collaborating with the Mundus Urbano programme. Students must attend at least 80% of the theory-practical classes. Students will be evaluated each seminar and workshop. At the end of the programme, students will defend their theses before the academic and/or professional committee, made up of sector specialists and experts. In the second part of the course (FIELD TRIP & INTERNSHIP), students will travel to a place in which to follow in situ the process of a project in International Cooperation, to carry out the corresponding fieldwork activities. Students will also participate in an internship with nongovernmental organizations (NGO), governmental and other institutions in the field and working on reconstruction projects. Thesis and Research Work In the third part of the course (TERM 3 STUDIO PROJECT), students will prepare their theses, which will be supervised by their tutor. Access Routes ROUTE 1: Enrolment on the website to study the Master s Degree Programme in International Cooperation in Sustainable Emergency Architecture at the UIC s ESARQ School of Architecture. ROUTE 2: Enrolment through Mundus Urbano ( to study the two-year Mundus Urbano Master s Degree Programme in International Cooperation, which forms part of the of the Erasmus Mundus European cooperation programme. Course reservation and enrolment Reservation Candidates accepted into Master s or Postgraduate courses will be contacted by post. Your place in the programme can be effectively reserved by depositing the stipulated amount for the programme at any La Caixa savings bank office no later than five days after receipt of the letter informing you that you have been admitted to the programme. The amount deposited will be subtracted from the total amount due for the programme. Once the reservation fee has been paid, if the student does not meet the course prerequisites as determined by state legislature or autonomous regulations, does not hold the required degree or does not effectively register, the UIC will refund the reservation fee in full. If after paying the deposit the student should choose of his own volition not to pursue the course of studies, the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya shall become owner, with no obligation to refund, of the entire amount received as a deposit on the place as compensation for the damages caused. If the student does not pay the reservation fee within the time period indicated, it will be understood that he or she is no longer interested in accepting the place in the course, and the UIC will cancel his or her spot, rendering the corresponding application null and void. Enrolment The registration period will be communicated to the people admitted who have reserved their place once all the anticipated places in the programme have been assigned. After official registration, you will have 10 calendar days to make a single payment of the outstanding amount due

7 Admission Process If you are interesting in taking the UIC s Master s Degree of International Cooperation in Sustainable Emergency Architecture, you can participate in the admissions process by following these steps: 1. Fill in the application form and pay the corresponding file-processing fee (non-refundable). These documents are available on the Master s Programme website. 2. Submit the following documents to the Information and Admissions Service (see forms of access and contact data): Students with an official Spanish university degree Original attested photocopy of your university degree or a document certifying that your degree has been recognized, or an original attested photocopy of the receipt for payment of the fee to have the degree issued. Original attested photocopy of the academic transcript of your university studies. Students with an official foreign university degree Original attested photocopy of your university degree. Original attested photocopy of the academic transcript of your university studies. Certificate issued by the university where you earned your undergraduate degree indicating that the degree authorizes you to take postgraduate courses in the country where the degree was issued. In all cases Two ID-sized photos. Photocopy of your Spanish identity card (DNI) or passport. Updated curriculum vitae. Attested photocopy of any other university degrees, including postgraduate degrees. All documents issued in languages other than Spanish, Catalan, English, French or Italian must be accompanied by a sworn translation into Spanish. Certificate of English level (at least First Certificate or equivalent). Two letters of recommendation. A motivation letter. 3. Take the admission test and have a personal interview if necessary.
