I. Aim of the Program The aim of this program is to develop competent family physicians capable of providing high quality patient-centered comprehensive medical care, covering the biopsychosocial aspect of their patients based on the best available medical evidence. Our trainees will learn to work in teams both as members and as leaders. They will share in community focused research and will be committed to life-long learning. They will also learn to apply appropriate ethical and professional standards in their day to day practice and in their relationships with their patients and colleagues. II. Intended Learning Outcomes of the Program (ILOs) A. Knowledge and Understanding: By the end of the program the candidate should be able to: 1) Define health, health spectrum and factors affecting health. 2) Identify the role of the family physician in providing comprehensive health care. 3) Identify health needs and problems according to the human life cycle. 4) Identify the etiology, clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis, prevention and management of the common, important and emergency medical conditions affecting all age groups in the Egyptian population according to the best available evidence. 1

2 5) Define epidemiological needs of the community 6) Identify the basics of clinical epidemiology. 7) Identify how the health care delivery system in Egypt operates as well as the medico legal legislations in Egypt. 8) Identify the uses, effects, side effects and drug interactions of common drugs in adults, pediatrics, geriatrics, and patients with liver or kidney diseases, pregnant and lactating females (essential drug list). 9) Identify the principles of medical ethics that guide the doctor-patient and the doctordoctor relationships at the different levels of health care services. 10) List the basis of research, critical appraisal of researches and evidence based medicine. 11) Identify the etiology, clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis and management of the common drug and substance abuse problems as well as the management of their withdrawal symptoms. B. Intellectual Skills: By the end of the program the candidate should be able to: 1) Integrate the information gathered from medical records, history, clinical examination and investigations to reach a proper diagnosis or a differential diagnosis. 2) Appraise research articles critically. 3) Interpret statistical results efficiently and apply the results in performance improvement. 4) Manage resources effectively (including time). 5) Conduct community needs assessments. C. Professional and Practical Skills: By the end of the program the candidate should be able to: 1) Apply proper consultation through; medical records, history taking, clinical examination and selection of the proper investigations according to the human life cycle to develop an appropriate patient centered management plan. 2) Provide appropriate counseling in health and disease. 3) Manage acute emergency cases initially, perform fundamental life support measures when indicated and perform proper referral. 4) Perform routine procedures needed in family practice. 5) Use drugs appropriately in a cost effective manner. 6) Demonstrate the ability to communicate in multiple modalities with patients, their families, other health care providers and administrators. 2

3 7) Use the different models for behavioral modification and change for life style modification. 8) Initiate, utilize and audit medical records to insure appropriateness of continuity of care. 9) Implement evidence based medicine and guidelines in the everyday practice. 10) Apply a coordinated referral system. D. General and Transferable Skills: By the end of the program the candidate should be able to: 1) Apply comprehensive care through a biopsychosocial approach. 2) Recognize self limitations with regards to practice and seek consultation with other health care providers to provide optimal care for his clients. 3) Apply safe medical practice through early recognition, reporting and correction of medical errors. 4) Show appropriate application of client s right with his clients including empathy, respect for their dignity, their privacy and their rights and equity of care among them. 5) Demonstrate the capacity to communicate effectively and maintain honesty and integrity in all interactions with his clients, their families and his colleagues. 6) Work effectively in a team either as a member or as a leader who can educate, motivate, supervise and lead other health workers in health promotion, disease prevention and management of diseases. 7) Practice continuous professional development. Program Admission Requirements According the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Bylaws for Post Graduate Programs (July 2009), applicants should have MBBCh or equivalent degree. According to Cairo University requirements, all applicants for postgraduate studies should fulfill preliminary courses on the following subjects; Medical statistics I English language (Toefl or equivalent degree) Computer skills (ICDL) or equivalent computer course offered by the medical education center (MEDC). Admission to the program is open during July. Training prior to registration may be accredited according to departmental and hospital evaluation. Program structure and c ontents 3

7 Residency Training Program Phase 1 Training: According to the new Bylaws, July 2009 for post graduate programs, all the candidates should have clinical training for 18 months. In this training phase the residents will rotate in the internal medicine, the pediatrics, the emergency and the family medicine departments. During this period the students will attend the compulsory first part courses and they will also complete the elective courses. Phase 2 Training: All candidates should have clinical training for 18 months. In this training phase the residents will rotate in the Gynecology & Obstetrics department, the surgery clinic, the dermatology clinic, the psychiatry clinics, the ENT clinic, the ophthalmology clinic, the family medicine department and the emergency departments. During this period the students will attend the compulsory courses of the second part and will participate in the scientific activities of the department. Master Thesis: All master degree students should prepare a thesis in family medicine. The research and ethical committee of the department must approve the protocol of the research. The thesis may include a review part and a research part. The thesis is supervised by one or more senior staff members and may include other specialties according to the nature of the research. The thesis should be evaluated and approved by a committee of three professors including one of the supervisors and an external professor. Scientific Activities: The candidates should participate in the scientific activities of the department such as: Seminars. Journal clubs. Scientific meetings. Workshops. Conferences. Thesis discussions. Each activity is monitored and given credit points registered in a special section in the logbook. Candidates should collect the required points before allowed to sit for final exam. VI. Regulations for progression and program completion After finishing the first part of the residency training, attending the specified courses and collecting the required credit points, the student should pass the first part examination before proceeding to the second part. In case the student fails to pass the examination, he may proceed in the clinical training and can resubmit for the next examination. After passing the first part, the student submits a protocol for master thesis at the beginning of the second part. Before submitting to the final exam, he should finish the thesis and get approval, complete the second part of the training program, and collect the required credit points. The candidate will receive his degree after passing this final examination. The Master degree should be obtained within a maximum of 6 years after the registration date. 7

8 VII. Assessment A: Assessment Tools Supervision and Monitoring of Training Program According the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Bylaws for practical Training Programs, professors carry continuous assessment during the program. A practical training program logbook will be kept for each candidate to document all his/her practical activities as well as his/her participation in different scientific activities. The head of the department should allow the candidates to undergo the final examination when they complete their training program and collect the credit points needed. Formal Assessment According the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Bylaws for Post Graduate Programs (July 2009). Students should be assessed at the end of first part and of the second part. 1. First Part Final Exam: Community Medicine: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam Clinical Pharmacology: 1 hour written exam Internal Medicine: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam + Clinical exam Pediatrics: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam + Clinical exam Medical Ethics: 1 hour written exam 2. Second Part Final Exam: General Surgery: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam + Clinical exam Obstetrics & Gynecology: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam + Clinical exam Dermatology: 1 hour written exam Ophthalmology: 1 hour written exam ENT: 1 hour written exam Psychiatry: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam Emergency Medicine, Traumatology & Toxicology: 2 hours written exam + Oral exam B: Assessment Schedule: 1. First Part Final Exam: The written examinations will be held in five days. This will be followed by the practical and oral examinations in separate days. 2. Second Part Final Exam: The written examinations will be held in seven days. This will be followed by the practical and oral examinations in separate days. 8
