Other ways to understand coaching When I was a graduate student about 50 years ago, I thought of opening a storefront office in the South Side of Chicago where I would advise people who walked in about how to get the most out of their lives. That dream has now been realized by the sudden growth of the coaching movement, especially its evidence-based branch. I do think that empirically-grounded coaching can be very helpful. The dangers lie, as in all endeavors of this kind, in promising too much, in extending beyond the knowledge base, and in becoming rigid and territorial. (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, 2007)
Evidence-based Coaching is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in delivering coaching to clients, and in designing and teaching coach training programs (Grant & Stober, 2007) Evidence-based decision making Critical thinking & Optimistic cynicism! NOT Optimistic optimism
Coaching is about Self-regulation Set a Goal Develop an Action Plan Act Change (if necessary) Monitor (requires Self-Reflection) Evaluate (associated with Insight) Success
Coaching is about the Normal population
Positive Psychology & Well-being High Levels of Mental Health Research & Change Low Levels of Mental Health
Coaching is essentially about goals Research & Change High Levels of Goal Striving Low Levels of Goal Striving

Key Points of Study 4 Mindfulness training before coaching seems to build psychological muscle Baumeister vs. Attentional Focus? Short MT can be effective MT in coaching reduces anxiety & stress Coaching adds value - Information alone is not enough
Key Points The main focus of these coaching studies was goal attainment - participants were coached to reach their goals Well-being & other positive psychological benefits were ancillary outcomes Although coaching can be very effective it s no panacea Coaching is an applied positive psychology
Other CPU coaching outcome studies Peer vs professional coaches (RCT) Professional coaches more effective than peer (Spence & Grant, 2007) High school students (RTC) Life coaching enhanced resilience and hope (Green, Grant, Rynsaardt. 2007) High school teachers (RTC) Workplace coaching enhanced well-being, goal attainment and hope (Grant, Green, Rynsaardt, 2007) Coaching vs training (skills and EI) (pre-post) Coaching increased both skills and EI, training increased only skills (Grant, 2007)
