Included are the doctrines of Christ, salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Church, and last things. Three credits. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student should 1. understand the doctrine of the person of Christ and his work in salvation. 2. understand the doctrine of the person of the Holy Spirit and his work in sanctification. 3. understand the different theories of church organization, mission, and sacraments. 4. understand the different eschatological theories of the resurrection, millennium and eternal states. 5. value the importance of theological understanding for life and ministry. 6. serve the church through the integration of doctrine with ministry. U.S. Catholic (2010) (available on Moodle) REQUIREMENTS: 1. Online Participation There is an expectation that the student will log in to the class website on a regular basis (i.e. more than once a week) to engage the lectures and readings and participate in the discussion forums. 2. Threaded Discussion Forums Every week there will be two forums for threaded discussions, one based on the lecture material and the other on the assigned reading. Students are expected to participate in all forums by posting at least one original comment and one response to the comment of another student per forum. This will oblige the student to post a minimum of four comments per week in the discussion forums. (A comment may be anywhere from a couple substantive sentences to a short paragraph. Comments like I agree with Joe are not substantive.) Each forum becomes available on Tuesday morning and will remain open for a period of two weeks, closing on the Monday night two weeks following at midnight. After this time forums will be closed to new comments. (For example, the forum opening Tuesday, February 26 th will be available for comments until 11:59 PM MST Monday, March 11 th.) Comment grades will be assigned in two blocks for the threaded discussions: January 22- March 4 and March 5-April 22. Comments will be graded both in terms of quantity and quality. This two stage grading will provide students with the opportunity to receive critical feedback on their participation part way through the course. 3. Book Review of Beilby and Eddy, The Nature of Atonement 4 hours Review the contents of the book in approximately words. Then spend the rest of the review in constructive engagement. What about the book did you find helpful? Were there problem areas? Did you like the structure? ( words) Due Date: Feb hours 2

3 4. Annotated Bibliography A minimum of 10 sources (including both journal articles and books) totaling a minimum of 200 pages. At most two essays may be drawn as separate sources from the same book. Course texts do not count toward the ten source requirement. Each annotation should consist of approximately five to six substantial sentences of text summary. This bibliography is intended to provide the core research for your term paper. Be sure to follow SBL guidelines concerning the identification of academic sources. Include your thesis statement with the bibliography. See the end of this syllabus for a list of possible paper topics. Due Date: Mar hours 5. Term Paper This is a research paper on any topic of your choosing in the following subjects: christology, soteriology, pneumatology, ecclesiology, or eschatology. It should be in SBL format with title page, footnotes and bibliography. (You may resubmit your annotated bibliography but if there are additional sources they should be included as well, though they need not be annotated.) It is strongly advised that students submit a thesis statement and outline well in advance of the paper s submission to receive critical feedback from the instructor. ( words) Due Date: Apr hours 6. My Credo (Doctrinal Position) Paper In this paper you will summarize your doctrinal position on christology, pneumatology, ecclesiology and eschatology (approximately two pages each). Include relevant scriptural passages in parenthetical references but footnote all other sources. Follow the Writing Guide s SBL format. ( words) Due Date: Apr hours 7. Do not submit a hard copy. When you your assignment it is recommended that you request a read receipt to ensure that your assignment has been received. Defend the doctrine of hell against charges that it undermines the love of God and the perfection of heaven. 31. Develop a position paper on the nature of the resurrection body (e.g. the nature of sexuality; the continuity/discontinuity with the pre-resurrection body; the nature of bodily wholeness with the physically/mentally handicapped or very young). 32.
