3 Welcome to the Delta Continuing Education Information Session for the Early Childhood Education Certificate Program! VALUE STATEMENT Students are engaged through stimulating, relevant and inspiring educational experiences based on these core values: "Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Community, and Excellence." Delta Continuing Education strives to hire instructors who demonstrate these core values and who are an integral part of the ECE community and who continue their education by attending conferences, workshops to stay current in the ECE field. General Information about Delta Continuing Education and ECE Delta Continuing Education has been teaching Early Childhood Education (ECE) since Delta Continuing Education is approved by the Ministry of Children and Family Development as a training institution for Early Childhood Education Basic and Post Basic Certificates. Since 2000 we have been offering courses in Richmond through a partnership with Richmond School District. DCE began offering the Post Basic ECE program (Infant/Toddler and Special Needs) in September DCE is a ministry recognized educational institution. The Basic ECE program prepares students to work in licensed child care facilities. It meets the academic requirements necessary to apply for a provincial certificate as an Early Childhood Educator. V4K 3C9 This booklet contains some of the policies of the Delta Early Childhood Education program. Taking part in a program like this is a definite commitment on your part. Issues such as time, Assignment expectations, finances for supply and tuition fees, and dedication to the field of early childhood education are important considerations as you make the decision to be involved in the program. If you feel you are unclear about any of the details, which may help you make your decision about being involved in this program, please ask for such information prior to the start of courses. We want your decision to be an informed and comfortable one. The Delta ECE Certificate Coordinator and instructors will provide ongoing support and encouragement as you endeavour to balance the demands of school with your personal and professional commitments. 6 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CERTIFICATE After you have successfully completed the Basic ECE program, including three (3) Assignments, you will be granted a certificate of completion and an official transcript from Delta Continuing Education stating that you have met the academic requirements of the Early Childhood Education program. CERTIFICATES To apply for your CERTIFICATE as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant, submit: 1. An application for Registration from the ECE Registry website; 2. An official, sealed transcript of at least one of the following courses with Delta Continuing Education a. Child Growth and Development b. Health, Safety and Nutrition c. Child Guidance; 3. A character reference letter (s) attesting to your satisfactory work performance and suitability. To apply for your CERTIFICATE as an Early Childhood Educator (1 year), submit: 1. An application for Registration from the ECE Registry website; 2. An official, sealed transcript of program completion with Delta Continuing Education; 3. A character reference letter (s) attesting to your satisfactory work performance and suitability. To apply for your CERTIFICATE as an Early Childhood Educator (5 year), submit: 1. An application for Registration from the ECE Registry website; 2. An official, sealed transcript of program completion with Delta Continuing Education; 3. Documentation of 500 hours of work experience completed in licensed early childhood facilities under the supervision of a fully qualified Early Childhood Educator(s). These may be either volunteer or paid hours; 4. A reference letter (s) from the place (s) in which you completed your 500 hours attesting to your satisfactory work performance and suitability. 7 RENEWALS According to BC law, renewal of registration is required every five years for each certificate an individual holds. 9 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ECE Certificate Program Early Childhood Education courses prepare students to work in a licensed child care facility, working with children who have varying family, cultural and individual needs. Writing Workshop This workshop acts as a review of some practical aspects of writing an essay and as a refresher for those who may not have written course related essays for some time. Topics include essay forms, along with tips on strengthening writing style and proper citation of references and footnotes. ECE 106 Interpersonal Skills On a daily basis childcare providers work with families and resource people, this course is designed to allow students to learn more about themselves, increase communication skills, and develop a rich group experience. ECE 101, 102, 104 Child Growth and Development I, II and III The courses focus on developmental theories, looking at the history and nature of child study and theory as well as human development from conception through to adolescence with a focus on the preschool years. ECE 101 Foundations of Early Childhood Education This is an introductory course to the field of Early Childhood Education. This course explains basic terminology and provides an overview of different types of programs and centres for children. It also addresses standards for childcare centres in British Columbia. This course offers a broad overview of major historical and contemporary events and influences which shape early childhood approaches and programs. ECE 103 The Learning Child The Learning Child focuses on the role of the adult in establishing a developmentally appropriate environment and the value of learning through play. ECE 105, 200 Guiding and Caring I and II The role of the adult in guidance and the fostering of well being are the core of Guiding and Caring. Section 1 of this course focuses on a child centered approach to guiding children. Guiding and Caring II examines a non bias approach as well as strategies in working with children who display challenging behaviour. ECE 201, 202, 203 Curriculum Development The focus of curriculum development is planning curriculum experiences based on children s interests within an inclusive environment. Curriculum areas include Science, Social Studies, Math, Language and Literature, Music and Movement, and Art. ECE 204 Health, Safety and Nutrition The focus of this course is on providing and maintaining a healthy and safe environment. ECE 205 Family, School and Community Relations This course offers an examination of professional development, emphasizing interpersonal communication and working with families, colleagues and the community. ECE 110, 111, 112, 210, 211, 212 Observation Assignments Students study and practice methods of observing, recording and interpreting. ECE 120, 220, 250 Block Practicum Block Assignment is the opportunity to put theory into action. During Pracitcums, students will be working in preschool and daycare centres with experienced early childhood educators. Page No. 9

13 COURSE TIMETABLE Program Start Date Sunset Clause Course Load September. The five year sunset clause policy requires that a student complete all courses and Assignment in his/her program of study within five years of his/her program start date. Register for one (1) to two (2) courses per term. An Individualized Program Plan (IPP) will be written detailing course timelines for any student deciding to take ONLY one (1) course per term. The IPP can be changed at anytime throughout the student s studies to reflect the changing course load. Please note: Students accepted into the Fall 2015 cohort who take less than a full course load should expect that they may have to attend classes in North Delta beyond 2016/17. Class Times Each course is 12 weeks in length. Students MUST attend 12 night class per week and a minimum of 1 Saturday class per term. Class dates are confirmed with registration. Evening classes run from 6:30pm to 9:300pm/7:00pm to 10:00pm. Saturday classes run from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Classes will not be held on statutory holidays and/or may not be held during a school break (i.e. spring break/winter break). A class that falls on a statutory holiday and/or a school break closure will be rebooked for a different evening. Class Locations Delta Classes: North Delta Senior Secondary nd Avenue, N. Delta Richmond Classes: Neighbourhood Learning Centre 6800 Azure Rd. Richmond (*) (*) Class location is subject to change but will be held at a Richmond School location for the 105/16 and 2016/2017 school years. Throughout the terms, there may be times when classrooms are not available and the classes are moved to different locations. Students will be notified in advance. Saturday classes may be booked at different locations and/or offsite for a fieldtrip. Students are given this information on the 1 st night of classes. Class Size Observation Assignment Block Practicum Maximum class size: 30. Minimum class size: 15. If course registration is below 15, the Richmond and North Delta classes may be combined. Class location will be determined at that time. Each instructor will assign an Observation assignment based on course material. Observation assignments require daytime observation sessions. Students make arrangements with early childhood centres to observe the children and the program. Students who are already employed in the early childhood field may complete a limited number of observations in their workplace, but only with the approval of the instructor. Block Practicum is the opportunity to put theory into action. During Assignment, students will be working in preschool and daycare centres with experienced licensed Early Childhood Educators. A Delta ECE Assignment Facilitator will visit students several times during the Assignment to offer guidance and support. Each student works in three early childhood settings settings that are very different from each other in type, numbers of children and location. Thus, students have an opportunity to understand and implement the essentials of appropriate current practice. Page No. 13

15 Writing Workshop Textbooks and Handouts Conferences/ Workshops Supplies Criminal Record Check (CRC) Additional Fees ADDITIONAL COURSE FEES All new students will be required to attend a writing workshop offered through DCE. This workshop will be offered in June and September for ONE (1) Saturday from 9am to 4pm. Students can register for either session. Confirmation of the Saturday date will be distributed when students are accepted into the program. Approximately Fees are due upon registration of the courses and ordering of the textbook. Students may purchase textbooks from Delta/Richmond Continuing Education OR from other sources. Approximately As part of course curriculum, some instructors will require students to attend designated workshops/conferences (Children: Heart of the Matter/Richmond Child Care Dinner). Conference information, including date, registration information and costs are provided to the students prior to course registration. Conference fees are the responsibility of the student. Approximately Students require school supplies (pens, paper, binders, etc); and materials to make ECE learning activities and projects (poster board, paints, etc) for class assignments and Assignment. It is the student s responsibility to purchase supplies. Students are required to have a CRC Schedule B authorization. This is valid for five (5) years from the date of the application. Applications must be faxed directly to the Ministry of Public Safety/Solicitor General. Applicants DO NOT apply at their local police department/rcmp detachment. Application Fee Photo ID All students require a valid DCE photo ID. Transcripts Upon successful completion of the full program, students will receive one (1) official, sealed transcript. This transcript will be mailed within 2 3 weeks of request. Should a student require additional transcripts, the fee is $6.00/transcript. 16 APPLICATION PROCEDURE Acceptance to the Delta ECE Certificate program is through the following process. Please note: Applicants must be nineteen (19) years or older before the first day of classes. Step 1 Attend a free Delta Continuing Education ECE Certificate Information Session Step 2 Attend the scheduled CAAT testing Applicants must write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess reading comprehension and writing level. The testing takes approximately 1hour. Applicants must achieve a minimum of 70% on the comprehension component and a pass on the written component. Delta Continuing Education does not accept test results from other institutions. Applicants are notified via of their test results. Step 3 Submit application documents (Pages 17 41) WITH the application fee ($15.00 payable to Delta School District). Student documentation becomes property of DCE. Photocopy all of your documentation BEFORE submitting any documentation. Photocopying is the responsibility of the applicant NOT Delta Continuing Education. Mail or drop off the application process to: Delta Continuing Education th Street, Delta B.C, V4K 3C9 Attention: Lisa Nicholson, ECE Coordinator Step 4 Conditional Acceptance Should you be accepted into the program, you will receive a conditional acceptance letter (via ) and will be required to provide: o Pre training medical exam Page 35: Your family physician must complete, date and sign this form. There may be a cost associated with applying for a pre medical; contact your doctor for information on the fee. These costs are the responsibility of the student. o Criminal Record Check (CRC) Clearance Letter: You will receive this application form once you have been accepted into the DCE ECE program. The BC Ministry of Justice requires ID verification with the submission of your CRC application form. This means you will be required to submit your application form in person along with 2 pieces of ID. Once your ID has been verified, DCE will fax your application directly to the Ministry of Justice. DCE must retain the original application forms. Approximately 2 to 3 weeks later, DCE will receive a Clearance Letter from the Ministry. Students can request a copy of their clearance letter by contacting the ECE Coordinator. Your clearance letter is valid for five (5) years. Please note: Acceptance to Delta ECE is dependent upon satisfactory completion of all documentation including the pre training medical exam and criminal record check. Page No. 16
