6 João da Gama s Ship and the First Illegal Journey from Macau to New Spain in University of Macao, China, 25 May, Portuguese Slavery in Asia in the XVth and XVIIth centuries in Asian Association of World Historians, University of Osaka, 31 May Books Book: Landeiro: The King of the Portuguese from Macao Macao Foundation, forthcoming, Macau Foundation, Macau, The captain Bartolomeu Vaz de Landeiro travelled to India on the Armada of 1559, on the ship Frol del Mar: Flower of the Sea, led by Pero Vaz de Serqueira. Several years after arriving in Goa he travelled to Macao. It is, by the way, in Macao, that he built his life and fortune and it is also from Macao that Bartolomeu Landeiro began trading with India, Timor, Siam, Japan, the Philippines, or Cambodia. I would like to point out that the main objective of this book has been to study the particularities of the European presence in Macao and reconstruct the inter-cultural exchange that existed between Macao and other Asian centers of commerce. This task is particularly important because the search to recompose the History of Macao, through a meticulous study of the life of Captain Bartolomeu Landeiro, will consequently match the History of Macao and his influence on the seas of China, Taiwan, the Far-East of Japan, the Philippines and Southeast Asia. The Portuguese traders had an important role in Asian Commerce in the 16 th and 17 th centuries, since they were the commercial intermediary between China and Japan. Macau, an important European base in China, provided the access to the fair of Canton where the Portuguese traders acquired the silks and exchanged Japanese silver. In this book I studied this precious metal that, besides livening up the Chinese local economy, financed the movement of pirates, European traders, soldiers and missionaries all over the Far-East Sea. Book: The Portuguese and Japan (16 th and 17 th centuries), University of Tokyo, CEPESA, Lisbon, This is a proceeding of an international conference held in Lisbon, In this book we have studied the life of the Portuguese Jew Duarte Gomes Solis and we have analysed the book Discursos sobre los Comercios de las Índias, published in It is known that Solis was born in Lisbon between 1561 and The gap between that date and 1585, year of his departure to India, remains without significant information. Succeeding in getting to India in 1586, Solis s trade skills are immediately noticed by the ruling elite. Two years later, Solis is assistant to the Governor D. Manuel de Sousa Coutinho, helping him to implement economic policies in the State of India. In 1591 D. Matias de Albuquerque is appointed the new Governor of the Portuguese State of India (Estado da India) and Solis s fate changes. He is accused of fraud, his wealth confiscated and he is arrested and embarks to Portugal aboard the ship Madre de Deus.The relevance of this study is a new critical approach concerning innumerable aspects neglected for the western historians about the cultural relations between the Europeans and the Japanese in the XVIth and XVIIth centuries. We wanted, in a similar way, to confer a new boarding to the Religious, Commercial and Political aspects.
