1 MIAS 298 (Special Topics): Digital Asset Management Syllabus Spring Quarter 2014 Wednesdays 9:00-12:30 Location: YRL CLICC Room 11630F Instructor: Linda Tadic cell: (310) Office hours: Wednesdays 1:30-2:30 or immediately after class in GSEIS Room 244 This course focuses on technologies and workflows in managing digital moving image and audio assets throughout an asset s lifecycle. Under the umbrella of digital asset management, students will learn how to apply concepts of digital curation and preservation to actual systems and storage environments. Topics discussed include file formats and transcoding, technical and preservation metadata, metadata modelling to encompass more than one media type, storage options, estimating costs, creation and preservation workflows, and developing functional requirements for researching software solutions. We will review national and international digital preservation initiatives. Leaders in the field of digital asset management will guest speak in classes, and there will be three field trips to see digital asset management in action. Assignments/Grading Paper submission guidelines: Citations should follow MLA style. Assignments are submitted as electronic Word or Excel documents only following this format: single spaced; 12-pt. font. Do not submit PDFs. I will add comments to the documents and return them to you electronically. Send the assignments to my address: [email protected] Grading is as follows: Assignment #1: (35%): Develop basic user functional requirements for a DAM Assignment #2 (35%): DAM or digital preservation systems comparison Class participation (20%). Class participation is mandatory unless otherwise excused. Readings will be discussed in class, so come prepared. ASSIGNMENTS Assignment #1: paper and spreadsheet. Basic user functional requirements. Develop basic user functional requirements for a DAM for an actual organization. Identify required formats, metadata support, workflow requirements, desired user interaction, and other topics to be discussed in class. Deliverables: an Excel spreadsheet with Word 1

2 document narrative. Choose your organization by Class 3. We will discuss specifics of the assignment in class April 23 (Class 4). >> DUE: May 14, 2014 Assignment #2: paper. (8-10 pages) Choose two DAM or digital preservation systems and compare how they support digital asset management and digital preservation actions. The systems may be open source or proprietary, but they must have strong support for audiovisual assets. One of the two may be a system that we visited in a field trip (Iron Mountain, Deluxe, USC Digital Repository), but the two systems must have enough functional commonality to be comparable (e.g., do not select a system that is only a DAM to one that only performs digital preservation). >>DUE: June 8, 2014 Field trips There are three class field trips. All are held during class hours. They will require carpooling. 4/30/2014: Deluxe (Burbank). Address: 2130 Hollywood Way (near Victory Way), Burbank. Time: 9:00-11:00. We ll continue the class in their conference room until 12 noon. Students must carpool. Three parking spots will be reserved in visitor parking. The remainder will park in the staff lot or try street parking. 5/7/2014: Iron Mountain (Hollywood). Address: 1025 N. Highland Ave, Hollywood (south of Santa Monica Blvd in the old Bekins building) Time: 9:00-11:00. Not sure yet whether we can continue in their conference room. If not, students will be released at 11. Parking at Iron Mountain s lot is very limited. Students must carpool. 5/14/2014: USC Digital Repository. Meet at the Culver City Expo Line (time TBD) Time: 9:00-11:00. We ll continue somewhere on USC after the class to discuss what we just observed until 11:30-12, then take the Metro back to Culver City. TEXTS: There is no required textbook for the course. Required readings, mostly online or on CCLE, are listed per class. There will be additional readings throughout the quarter. 2
