2 University College Dublin INTRODUCTION Welcome to the University College Dublin Student Awards booklet. Each year UCD awards scholarships, prizes and medals to foster and reward high academic achievement among its students. Last year, over 496,000 in scholarships and prizes was distributed to UCD students from all faculties. This booklet outlines the general conditions governing the award of College scholarships and information about the origin of prizes and medals as well as listing winners from the previous academic session. Current awards include: Entrance Scholarships, undergraduate and postgraduate College Scholarships and Open Postgraduate Scholarships. 5 Student Awards GENERAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OF UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS The Governing Authority reserves the right to revise, at any time, the awards specified hereunder. Note: The scholarships listed are open only to full-time day students unless otherwise stated. 1. All candidates for scholarships awarded on examinations must be student members of the University. 2. The decision of the Governing Authority as to the awarding or withholding of any scholarship, or as to the eligibility of any candidate therefor, or as to any deduction to be made therefrom, shall be final and conclusive. 3. Only those students will be eligible for the award of University scholarships on the result of any examination who first entered the course leading thereto in the current session. Exceptions to this rule will be made only in very special circumstances. Previous attendance at a course covering part of the same matter may render a student ineligible for an award. 4. No student will be eligible for an award unless he/she has passed all the subjects of the examination for which the award is made, and has passed the examination at one sitting without compensation, except in the case where a candidate is precluded for a reason approved by Faculty from taking all the examination subjects in one sitting. 5. Holders of scholarships must attend such courses and pass such tests as may be required by the Academic Council in the Faculty in which they have been awarded a scholarship. 6. A candidate may be disqualified from the award of a scholarship by failing to reach an adequate standard in any one subject of the examination. 7. The scholarships awarded in the various Faculties in any session are tenable for one year unless otherwise stated. 8. Full scholarships are normally awarded only to candidates reaching a First Class Honours standard. Scholarships are not awarded to students who do not reach an honours standard. The grade of honours required by certain Faculties is specified in the Schedule of University Scholarships in each Faculty, set out on the following pages. 5

6 University College Dublin 9. Where students qualify by their marks for scholarships but are ineligible to receive the awards, credit will be given to them in the University records. In reckoning first and subsequent places, students ineligible for scholarship awards will not be counted. 10. Scholarships are tenable only in University College Dublin, and are intended for the session immediately following their award. The holder of a scholarship who leaves the University before the end of the session may be required to repay the amount received in respect of that session. 11. Scholars are required to pay any University fees due. 12. General conditions governing the award of University scholarships override all other regulations. 6

7 Student Awards GENERAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OF ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS Each Faculty will award a number of Entrance Scholarships, valued at 1,270 for one year, on the basis of points achieved in the Leaving Certificate examination. Only students who present for the Leaving Certificate examination for the first time are eligible for the award of Entrance Scholarships. For the purpose of the scholarship, points will be calculated on the basis of the best six subjects. The scholarships are tenable only in University College Dublin for the first year of a primary degree course. Persons who already hold a degree are not eligible for the award of an Entrance Scholarship. Faculties will publish annually the points level on or above which students will automatically be awarded a scholarship. The levels for the awards in September 2002 are given in the table below. To qualify for the scholarship, a candidate must have registered for a place in, or have been given permission to defer entry to, a first year course at University College Dublin. No age limit will apply to qualify for the award of an Entrance Scholarship. The Entrance Scholarships awarded in any session are tenable for one year. The scholarships will be awarded on the information concerning applications available following first year registration for the session. Candidates may only be awarded the UCD Entrance Scholarship once. Students will be notified of their eligibility for a scholarship as soon as possible after the issue of offers. However, scholarships are not finalised or paid until after first year registration for the session and receipt of amended Leaving Certificate results from the Department of Education and Science (usually mid-october). The holder of an Entrance Scholarship, to be known as an 'Entrance Scholar', who leaves the University before the end of the session may be required to repay the amount received in respect of that session. The decision of the Governing Authority as to the awarding or withholding of an Entrance Scholarship, or as to the eligibility of any candidate therefor, or as to any deduction to be made therefrom, shall be final and conclusive. In addition, Entrance Scholars will be given priority in the allocation of places in the UCD residences, where circumstances permit. 8

9 Student Awards A student may hold only one major Entrance Scholarship. In the event of a student qualifying for more than one major scholarship, the scholarship of the greater value will be awarded. A Level applicants from Northern Ireland who achieve the grades of AAA, AAB and ABB in their best three subjects, attained in one sitting, will also be awarded a scholarship except for applicants to the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine and Law. The Faculty of Law will award Entrance Scholarships to applicants attaining AAA and entrants to the BBLS Degree gaining AAA or AAB will also be awarded an Entrance Scholarship. Faculty of Medicine Entrance Scholarships The top five per cent of students entering* each of the Faculty of Medicine Schools - Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Diagnostic Imaging - will be awarded scholarships. These will normally be valued at 1,270 each, except if the total number to be awarded exceeds the allocated sum per school, when the amount will be divided equally. However, all students on 600 points entering the Faculty of Medicine are guaranteed scholarships of 1,270 each. (* with the Leaving Certificate or appropriate entry examination, presenting all subjects together at the first attempt.) Agricultural and Food Engineering Entrance Scholarships Agricultural and Food Engineering Entrance Scholarships will be awarded to the top three entrants to the course based on the results of the Leaving Certificate Examination. The scholarships, valued at 1,270 each, are available to those who do not qualify for the general Engineering Entrance Scholarships. A minimum points score of 500 is required for consideration for these scholarships. 9

10 University College Dublin GENERAL CONDITIONS GOVERNING THE AWARD OF OPEN POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS University College Dublin will award thirty postgraduate scholarships to students undertaking higher degrees by major thesis. The normal value of each scholarship is 2,540 subject to the discretion of each Faculty who may combine or divide scholarships. In addition, at the discretion of the Faculty, successful applicants may be considered for remission of fees. The number of scholarships available in each faculty is as follows: Agriculture 3 Arts, Philosophy & Sociology and Celtic Studies 13 Commerce 2 Engineering and Architecture 3 Law 2 Medicine 2 Science 3 Veterinary Medicine 2 The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are available equally to graduates of University College Dublin and other universities. They are tenable for one year of full-time postgraduate study at University College Dublin. 11 Student Awards FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE Second Year Scholarships: Two scholarships of 635 are offered on the results of the First University Examination in Agricultural Science. Third Year Scholarships: Two scholarships of 635 are offered on the results of the Second University Examination in Agricultural Science. Fourth Year Scholarships: Four scholarships of 635 are offered on the results of the Third University Examination in Agricultural Science. The scholarships shall be awarded to the four students who obtain the highest marks, with not more than one scholarship being assigned to any one programme. Postgraduate Awards: Research Demonstratorships: On the recommendation of the Scholarships Committee, research demonstratorships may be awarded on the results of the BAgrSc Degree Examination to candidates gaining a good Honours standard. Research demonstratorships will be held for one year. The holders will be required to act as demonstrators in their departments for six hours a week during term. They must attend courses for a higher degree in their subject but will not be permitted to attend any other course. Research demonstrators who have gained the Master's Degree within six terms, or the PhD Degree if applicable, within twelve terms of the primary degree, will be paid an additional 216 (the first half of this sum on receipt of a certificate from the head of the department that a thesis has been prepared; the second half when the degree has been conferred). 11

12 University College Dublin FACULTIES OF ARTS, PHILOSOPHY & SOCIOLOGY AND CELTIC STUDIES Scholarships on the Results of the First University Examination i n Arts and on the Results of the Second University Examination in Arts: Scholarships on the results of the First University Examination in Arts and of the Second University Examination in Arts, of the value of 635 each, will be awarded on a subject basis. To qualify for a scholarship on the results of the First University Examination in Arts, a student must obtain first place and First Class Honours in the subject together with at least a Second Class Honours in a second subject. On the results of the Second University Examination in Arts, a student must obtain first place and First Class Honours in the subject with at least a Second Class Honours, Grade I in the other subject. A student may be awarded more than one scholarship. A scholarship may be divided between students deemed to be ex aequo on the examination results. The BA Degree is usually taken by Mode II in two major subjects. The following rules apply in connection with the award of scholarships in Modes I and III. - In the case of Mode I, one scholarship may be awarded in each subject; two scholarships may be awarded in Economics and in Psychology if two students attain First Class Honours. - In the case of Mode III, the minor subjects will count jointly as one major subject. In Honours Mathematics and Honours Mathematical Physics, one scholarship each will be awarded jointly with the same subjects in the Faculty of Science. In the Mathematical Science Honours group, one scholarship will be awarded jointly with the results of the same group in the Faculty of Science. Open Scholarship in Arts One second year scholarship or one third year scholarship may be awarded in special circumstances to a student in Arts who is ineligible for a normal award. The scholarship of 635 will be awarded only to a student of outstanding performance. Prizes on the Modular (Evening) Degree in Arts Prizes on the results of the Foundation Level Examination and Level 2 Examination and Level 3 Examination of the Modular Evening Degree in Arts, to the value of 318, may be awarded on a subject basis. A prize to the value of 318 may be awarded to the student who achieves the highest mark, but not less than 62% in each subject module, in the Summer examinations, which includes semestrial examinations where applicable. A student who gains first place in 12

13 Student Awards two subject modules in the same examination will be given credit for both and may receive the monetary value of both prizes. If two students are deemed to be ex aequo in a subject module, each may receive a prize to the full value of the award. If more than two students are deemed to be ex aequo, the sum of 635 may be divided equally between them. Students repeating a subject module in an examination will not be eligible for the award of a Modular Programme Prize. Candidates to whom prizes are awarded must be student members of the University and must attend such courses and pass such tests as may be required by the Academic Council. The prizes are tenable for one year, and candidates are required to pay University fees and tuition fees. The decision of the Governing Authority as to the awarding or withholding of any prize, or as to the eligibility of any candidate therefor, or as to any deduction to be made therefrom, shall be final and conclusive. SOCIAL SCIENCE Scholarships on the results of examinations in Social Science will be offered in accordance with the regulations governing the award of scholarships in the Faculty of Arts. Scholarships on the Results of the First University Examination i n Social Science and on the Results of the Second University Examination in Social Science: Scholarships on the results of the First University Examination in Social Science and of the Second University Examination in Social Science, of the value of 635 each, will be awarded on a subject basis. To qualify for a scholarship on the results of the First University Examination in Social Science, a student must obtain first place and First Class Honours in the subject together with at least a Second Class Honours in a second subject. On the results of the Second University Examination in Social Science, a student must obtain first place and First Class Honours in the subject with at least a Second Class Honours, Grade I in the other subject. A student may be awarded more than one scholarship. A scholarship may be divided between students deemed to be ex aequo on the examination results. On the Results of the First University Examination in Social Science: - One scholarship may be awarded in the subject Information Studies; - One scholarship may be awarded in the subject Sociology; - One scholarship may be awarded in the subject Social Policy; - One scholarship may be awarded in Arts subjects in competition with Arts students. 13

14 University College Dublin On the Results of the Second University Examination in Social Science: - One scholarship may be awarded in each of the subjects Sociology, Social Policy and Information Studies; - Scholarships in Arts subjects will be offered in competition with Second Arts students. Music Scholarships in Music will be awarded in accordance with the regulations governing the award of scholarships in the Faculty of Arts. Higher Diploma in Religious Education Two prizes are offered each year on the results of the First Year Examination and two prizes on the results of the Final Year Examination for the Higher Diploma in Religious Education, provided a sufficiently high standard is reached. Patrick Semple Medals These medals commemorate Professor Patrick Semple, the first Dean of the Faculty of Arts ( ). (Award of the medals is conditional on the availability of funding from the Faculty of Arts). These medals will be awarded on the results of the 2003 examinations as follows: Mode I The medals will be awarded to registered students who pass the Second University Examination and secure either: (a) First place and First Class Honours, or (b) First place and at least Second Class Honours, Grade I in the one subject which constitutes the degree course. Modes II and III The medals may be awarded to registered students who pass the Second University Examination and secure either: (a) First place and First Class Honours in one subject with at least a Second Class Honours, Grade II in the other subject (Mode II) or subjects (Mode III); or (b) First place with at least Second Class Honours, Grade I in one subject and Second Class Honours, Grade II in the other subject (Mode II) or subjects (Mode III). 14

15 Student Awards Scholarships on the Results of the BA and the BSocSc Degree Examinations: Postgraduate students proceeding to a higher degree at this University may be awarded scholarships of 2,540 per annum on the results of the BA and the BSocSc Degree examinations. Subject to acceptance on a course and to satisfactory compliance with the normal requirements for completing a course, the scholarships are tenable for a maximum of two years' consecutive full-time study in the case of the Master's Degrees listed below, a maximum of three years consecutive full-time study in the case of the PhD and a maximum of three years full-time study, with consecutive registration, in the case of a student who pursues a Master's Degree immediately followed by the PhD in the areas covered by the degrees listed below. Master of Arts Master of Education Master of Literature Master of Equality Studies Master of Philosophy Master of Guidance and Counselling Master of Social Science Master of Library and Information Studies Master of Development Studies Master of Psychological Science Renewal of the scholarship will be conditional on satisfactory progress reports from the Professor supervising the student. To qualify for a postgraduate scholarship, a student must: (a) have attained First Class Honours in both subjects at the Honours Degree Examination, or (b) have attained first place and First Class Honours in one subject and not less than a Second Class Honours, Grade I standard in the other subject. Students taking the four-year BA (International) programme may not be considered under (b) in competition with students taking the three-year BA degree programme. However, in the event that no student following the three-year degree programme is awarded the scholarship in a subject, such scholarship may be awarded to a candidate following the BA (International) programme who reaches the required standard. This regulation will also apply to students following the four-year BSocSc (International) programme. Students taking the four-year BA (International) or BSocSc (International) programme who have attained first place and First Class Honours in one subject and not less than Second Class Honours, Grade I standard in the other subject, and who are not awarded a scholarship under the above regulations, may together be considered for the award of one Postgraduate Scholarship. 15

Note: Reference should also be made to the 'General Conditions Governing the Award of University Scholarships' on page 5 of this booklet. In the case of semesterised subjects, regulation no. 4 (that all subjects be passed at one sitting) does not apply but all such subjects must be passed at the first attempt. UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS Actuarial and Financial Studies One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations. One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations. One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 3 examinations. Bachelor of Science (Economics and Finance) One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations. One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations. Business and Legal Studies (Inter-Faculty Degree) Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations. Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations. Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 3 examinations. Commerce Six scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations. Five scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations. Commerce (International) One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 1 examinations. One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Level 2 examinations. 16

17 Student Awards POSTGRADUATE AWARDS Business and Legal Studies One scholarship of 2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examination, subject to the following conditions: (i) Candidates must have attained a high honours standard in the BBLS Degree Examination passed as a whole in the previous session; (ii) Candidates must proceed to attend a full-time course leading to a Master's Degree in either Law or Commerce. Commerce and Commerce (International) Three scholarships of 2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examinations. A further 211 will be paid to a holder who obtains the Master's Degree within the normal period specified by the Faculty. One scholarship only may be awarded in any one mode or language. In the event that no candidate achieves the minimum criteria for an award in any mode or language, this award may be transferred to a qualified candidate in another mode or language. Candidates must: (i) have passed the BComm Degree Examination as a whole in the previous session; (ii) have gained a standard of First Class Honours at the Degree Examination; (iii) proceed to attend full-time courses leading to a Master's Degree in the Faculty of Commerce at this University, and must not attend any other courses. Bachelor of Science (Economics and Finance) One scholarship of 2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examination, subject to the following conditions: (i) Candidates must have obtained a high honours standard in the BSc (Economics and Finance) Degree Examination passed as a whole in the previous session; (ii) Candidates must attend a full-time course leading to a Master s Degree in Commerce. Bachelor of Actuarial and Financial Studies One scholarship of 2,540 may be awarded on the results of the degree examination, subject to the following conditions: (i) Candidates must have obtained a high honours standard in the BAFS Degree Examination passed as a whole in the previous session; (ii) Candidates must attend a full-time course leading to a Master s Degree in Commerce. 17

Second Year Scholarships: Provided a standard of First Class Honours is attained, the following awards may be made on the results of the First University Examination in Engineering: One scholarship of 635 in each of the branches: Agricultural and Food Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electronic and Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Civil/Mechanical Engineering. Third Year Scholarships: Provided a standard of First Class Honours is attained, the following awards may be made on the results of the Second University Examination in Engineering: One scholarship of 635 in each of the branches: Agricultural and Food Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electronic and Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering. Fourth Year Scholarships: Provided a standard of First Class Honours is attained, the following awards may be made on the results of the Third University Examination in Engineering: One scholarship of 635 in each of the branches: Agricultural and Food Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electronic and Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering. Research Demonstratorships: On the recommendation of the Scholarships Committee, research demonstratorships may be awarded on the results of the BE Degree Examination to candidates gaining a good Honours standard. In addition, up to three research demonstratorships may be awarded on a competitive basis to graduates of other Irish universities who have appropriate qualifications. Research demonstratorships will be held for one year. Research demonstrators may hold additional awards, such as local authority grants or may be in receipt of other payments through the payroll in UCD. The holders will be required to act as demonstrators in their departments for six hours a week during term. They must attend courses for a higher degree in their subject but will not be permitted to attend any other course. 18

Fourth Year Scholarship: One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Third University Examination in Architecture. Fifth Year Scholarship: One scholarship of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Fourth University Examination in Architecture. 19

20 University College Dublin FACULTY OF LAW Undergraduate Awards: Bachelor of Civil Law: Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the First University Examination in Civil Law. Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Second University Examination in Civil Law. Bachelor of Business and Legal Studies (Inter-Faculty Degree): Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the First University Examination in Business and Legal Studies. Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Second University Examination in Business and Legal Studies. Two scholarships of 635 may be awarded on the results of the Third University Examination in Business and Legal Studies. Postgraduate Awards: Postgraduate Scholarship: On the recommendation of the Scholarships Committee, one scholarship may be awarded on the results of the BCL Degree Examination, including the BCL (European Legal Studies) and the BCL (International), to a candidate normally gaining a First Class Honours degree. The scholarship will be held for one year and will be of the value of 2,540. The holder must spend not less than three terms at full-time study leading to the Degree of LLM by research. Furthermore, the holder may not concurrently pursue the postgraduate instructional year of the Law Society. 23 Student Awards FACULTY OF SCIENCE Scholarships on the Results of the First University Examination i n Science: Scholarships on the results of the First University Examination in Science will be awarded on a subject basis. One scholarship, of value 635, may be awarded in each of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Experimental Physics and Geology. For these scholarships, Mathematics and Mathematical Physics will be taken into consideration only as support subjects. In Honours Mathematics and Honours Mathematical Physics, one scholarship each will be awarded jointly with the results of the same subjects in the Faculty of Arts and under the same rules. To qualify for a scholarship in a subject on the results of the First University Examination in Science, a student must attain First Place and First Class Honours in the subject concerned together with a minimum standard of a good Second Class Honours in another of his/her four subjects. A student may be awarded more than one scholarship. A scholarship may be divided between students deemed to be ex aequo on the examination results. Scholarships on the Results of the Second University Examination i n Science: One scholarship, of value 635, may be awarded in each subject of the Second University Examination in Science which leads to an Honours degree. To qualify for one of these scholarships, a student must gain a First Class Honours standard and first place in the subject concerned together with a standard of at least a good Second Class Honours in another of his/her three subjects. A student may be awarded more than one scholarship. A scholarship may be divided between students deemed to be ex aequo on the examination results. One scholarship in Mathematical Science (four-year honours degree) will be awarded jointly with the results of the same group in the Faculty of Arts and under the same rules. Scholarships on the Results of the Third University Examination (Honours) in Science: A total of not more than ten scholarships, of value 635, will be offered on the marks obtained at the Third University Examination in Science in the major subject or in a topical degree course, provided the candidate reaches a standard equivalent to First Class Honours at this examination and passes in the optional units (Part I) for the BSc Honours Degree at a standard considered adequate by the Faculty of Science. 23

24 University College Dublin Scholarships on the Results of the Third University Examination (Honours) in Science in the Joint Honours Degree Courses: On the results of the Third University Examination (Honours) in Science in the four-year joint Honours degree courses, one scholarship of 635 will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must gain first place and reach a standard equivalent to First Class Honours in the joint subjects, having obtained the equivalent of not less than First Class Honours in one subject and at least a good Second Class Honours in the other subject. Scholarships on the Results of the BSc (Honours) Degree Examination in Mathematical Science: Students graduating with a BSc (Honours) Degree in Mathematical Science will be considered for a postgraduate scholarship with students graduating with an Honours BA Degree in Mathematical Science. Students may not hold simultaneously the postgraduate scholarship and a research demonstratorship. In the event that a student qualifies for the two awards, he/she must choose one and relinquish the other. Open Scholarship in Science: One second year or one third year or one fourth year scholarship may be awarded in special circumstances to a student of Science who is ineligible for a normal award. The scholarship of 635 will be awarded only to a student of outstanding performance. Research Demonstratorships: On the recommendation of the Scholarships Committee, research demonstratorships may be awarded on the results of the BSc Honours Degree Examination to candidates gaining a good Honours standard. In addition, up to six research demonstratorships may be awarded on a competitive basis to graduates of other Irish universities who have appropriate qualifications. Research demonstratorships will be held for one year. Research demonstrators may hold additional awards, such as local authority grants or may be in receipt of other payments through the payroll in UCD. The holders will be required to act as demonstrators in their departments for six hours a week during term. They must attend courses for a higher degree in their subject but will not be permitted to attend any other course. Research demonstratorships may be awarded for a second year and, in the case of PhD students, for a third. Research demonstrators who have gained the Master's Degree within six terms or the PhD Degree within twelve terms of entering the course, will be paid an additional 216 (the first half of this sum on receipt of a certificate from the head of the department that a thesis has been prepared; the second half when the degree has been conferred). 24

28 University College Dublin AGRICULTURE Agricultural Economics Society of Ireland Award The Agricultural Economics Society of Ireland has kindly agreed to fund an annual award to recognise the longstanding relationship between the Society and the graduates of the Faculty of Agriculture, University College Dublin. The award will consist of a medal and a small monetary amount (approximately 127). It will be presented annually to the Agribusiness and Rural Development student who, having passed the BAgrSc Degree Examination in toto at the first attempt, obtains the highest combined marks in the fourth year courses 'Enterprise Development' and 'Food and Farm Input Marketing'. Agricultural Trust Prize in Landscape Horticulture A prize of 254 is awarded on the recommendation of an Assessment Committee, based on examination results and the candidate's performance in undergraduate course work on the Landscape Horticulture programme. Patrick Dempsey Memorial Prize This prize is funded by the family of the late Patrick Dempsey, who lectured in the Department of Horticulture from 1970 until his untimely death in The prize, of the annual value of approximately 381, is awarded to the most outstanding student in the subject Plant Materials and who also reaches a sufficiently high standard in the overall examination. In the event that no student reaches sufficiently high standards, the prize may be withheld. F.B.D. Trust Educational Award in Landscape Horticulture A prize of up to 635 will be awarded on the recommendation of an Assessment Committee for the best group study proposal in a subject area of relevance to the development of Landscape Horticulture in rural Ireland. The award will be used to finance a group study tour concerned with the project and to contribute towards the production and distribution costs of the final report. Fertiliser Association of Ireland - Soil Science Award The award, established by the Fertiliser Association of Ireland, will be presented to the student who obtains the best mark in the Soil Science examination in Second Year Agricultural Science. The value of the award is 381 along with a commemorative plaque. 28

29 Student Awards Garden Centre Association Trust Perpetual Award The prize, established by the English Garden Centre Association Trust, is offered annually to the best student in the Horticultural Science course, 'Nursery and Garden Centre Management'. It comprises an engraved solid silver salver mounted in Irish bog oak together with a nominal value book token. The trophy will remain the property of the Trust and a condition of the award is that it be held at University College Dublin for annual presentation. Ian Gordon Award This award, which is in the form of a medal, is presented annually to the student who obtains first place in the area of Animal Physiology in the Third Agricultural Science Examination having passed the examination as a whole. Thomas Henry Foundation This trust provides financial assistance in the sciences and practice of Agriculture, Horticulture and Veterinary Medicine to persons born, or ordinarily resident, in Northern Ireland. In the case of postgraduate students undertaking research in the designated areas, application is made by the University on behalf of a student. A detailed proposal of the research project to be undertaken must be submitted. In the case of undergraduate students, who must have been born or be ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland, application may be made directly to the trust before 1st July in any year to: The Secretary, Thomas Henry Foundation, 31 The Terrace, Downpatrick, Co. Down BT30 6EH, Northern Ireland. Scholarships are awarded by the Foundation on a competitive basis. Patrick Hogan Memorial Scholarship A scholarship of approximately 254 is awarded annually to commemorate the late Patrick Hogan, first Minister for Agriculture in the Irish Free State. The award is made on the results of the Third University Examination in Agricultural Science. No student holding a scholarship or bursary exceeding 635 in value is eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship may be withheld in any year if no candidate obtains a sufficiently high standard. Hussey Prize in Agribusiness The money subscribed by members of the Agricultural Science Association on the retirement of the late Mr F.P. Hussey, BAgrSc, in appreciation of his years of service ( ) on the teaching staff of the Faculty of Agriculture, was, at Mr Hussey's own request, handed over to the University to form a prize fund. The Hussey Prize in Agribusiness is awarded annually to the Agribusiness and Rural Development student who 29

30 University College Dublin obtains the highest aggregate marks in the subjects Agricultural Policy and Farm Business Management in the Fourth University Examination in Agricultural Science. A student receiving this prize will not be eligible to receive the Agricultural Economics Society of Ireland Award. Irish Fertilizer Industry Prize for Professional Work Experience Three awards of equal merit are awarded to students in the degree programmes, Animal and Crop Production (two awards) and Animal Science (one award). The awards were established to acknowledge excellence achieved by students during their Professional Work Experience programme. Irish Landscape Institute Design Award The Irish Landscape Institute established the Design Award to acknowledge excellence in landscape design undertaken by Fourth Year Landscape Horticulture students and Master of Landscape Architecture students. A prize of a minimum value of 127, together with a certificate, will be awarded to the student who, in the opinion of a judging panel, has prepared an outstanding design project. Irish Tillage and Land Use Society Award The Irish Tillage and Land Use Society funds an annual award in the BagrSc Degree Examination for the student obtaining the highest marks in the subject 'Crop Husbandry'. Currently, the value of the award is 635. Qualification for the award follows the normal protocol. The award is based on the overall mark for the subject and should not be available to any student/graduate who has already been awarded a prize in any of the individual components which make up the subject Crop Husbandry. Canon Kennedy Fund A donation was received in 1943 from Very Rev. M.J. Canon Kennedy, PP, Cloghan, for the promotion of Agricultural Science. It formed the nucleus of a fund to be spent by the President at his discretion on the promotion of Agricultural Science in the University and preferably by helping needy students in pursuing courses in Agriculture. Applications with full particulars should be made to the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture. McGuckian Medal and Study Travel Grant This award is made to the student who obtains first place in Animal and Crop Production or Animal Science in the BAgrSc Degree Examination. The travel grant of the value of 635 is payable to enable the candidate to observe, at first hand, agriculture outside of Ireland. The travel itinerary will be drawn up and approved by the Heads of the Department of Animal Science and Production and the Department of Crop Science, Horticulture and Forestry. 30

31 Student Awards Paul Mulhere Award This award was established in memory of Paul Mulhere, a member of staff in the Faculty of Agriculture, who died following an injury sustained during a hurling game at Croke Park in November The award which comprises a silver medal and a monetary prize, is presented annually to the student who, having passed the BAgrSc Degree Examination, gains the highest marks in the Crop Breeding component of the subject Crop Husbandry. William O'Connell Award This award was established in memory of William (Bill) O'Connell, a member of staff in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University, who died in October The award will take the form of a medal and a prize of 127 to be presented annually to the student scoring the highest marks in the subject Animal Nutrition I in the BAgrSc Degree programme. Universal Floral Display Award The prize, established by Universal Floral Display Limited (Indoor Plant Decor Specialists), will be offered annually to the student who gains first place in the subject Interior Plantscaping. Archaeology Ruaidhri de Valera Memorial Prize The income from funds subscribed as a memorial to the late Ruaidhri de Valera, Professor of Celtic Archaeology in University College Dublin from 1957 to 1978, is used to award a prize. This prize, known as the 'Ruaidhri de Valera Memorial Prize', is awarded to the student who obtains the highest marks in Archaeology in the MA Degree Examination with the award of First Class Honours. The annual value of the prize is approximately 445 but may vary in the light of the current state of the fund. Michael Herity Award The income from funds subscribed on the retirement of Professor Michael Herity, who taught in the Department of Archaeology in University College Dublin from 1961 to 1994, is used to award a prize. The prize is awarded to the student who obtains first place with First Class Honours in the Second Year examinations in Archaeology. The annual value of the prize varies depending on the current state of the fund. Celtic Studies Osborn Bergin Memorial Prize/Duais Chuimhneacháin an Aimhirgínigh Osborn Joseph Bergin ( ), Professor of Early and Medieval Irish at University College Dublin from 1909 to 1940, is remembered as 'the prince of native Irish scholars'. His renown which was worldwide drew scholars and students to his lectures from all parts. Professor Vernam Hull of Harvard University, who studied with Bergin, endowed this prize in his memory. On occasion, on the recommendation of the Faculty of Celtic Studies, this prize may be awarded to a student for the purpose of postgraduate research. The Máire MacNeill Scholarship may be awarded annually to qualified students intending to take up postgraduate studies in the subject, Irish Folklore, at University College Dublin or to those already engaged in such studies.
