8 Your Safety Comes First from Dominick DeSiato Uninsured/Underinsured Motorcycle Insurance Coverage First let me qualify myself, or unqualify myself as the case may be, by advising you that I am not in the insurance business. What I am going to tell you is based on my own personal experiences having been injured in automobile crashes and investigating some pretty nasty motorcycle crashes involving permanent injuries. 25% of the drivers out there waiting to injure you have either no automobile liability insurance or they are underinsured. Underinsured simply means that they are carrying only the minimum liability insurance coverage required by law which is $10,000. The average trip to the emergency room is between $6,000- $8,000. As you can see if you need any further treatment that $10,000 will be gone quickly. Sure you could say that you will sue the other driver for the rest of the money for bodily damages but think of it, if the other driver had any money they would not have purchased the minimum coverage. You need to take care of yourself. The way to make sure there is some money to tap into incase you get seriously injured is to cover yourself with your own uninsured motorist coverage. It is not uncommon in a motorcycle crash for the rider or passenger to loose a limb or injury their back or neck to the point that they may not be able to work anymore. I don't know about you, but if I get injured to the point that I can't qualify on the annual physical fitness obstacle course I am out of a job. I couldn't maintain my present life style with a job that would require me to say: "Welcome to Walmart". You are entitled to sue for damages in the scenario I just described but only if there is any money available to sue from. If the person that caused your injury has nothing you get nothing. If you have decent uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy you can sue for the limits you paid for. Today $10,000 is nothing. A million dollars is better. You will have to decide just how much money you would need to survive on if you could no longer work at your present job. Talk with your insurance agent. Think about combining your motorcycle with your other vehicle insurance. The benefit of this is that the underinsured motorist coverage will be cheaper and you can do what is called stacked coverage. An example of that is that if you carry uninsured motorist coverage with a limit of $500,000 on your car and $500,000 on your motorcycle, stacked there is $1,000,000 in the pot you can make a claim from. Once again I only used a million dollars as an example. You decide what you feel comfortable with. You should not feel comfortable at all if you are presently riding your bike with no or low underinsured motorist coverage. I hope you never have to find out the hard way what I am talking about but many people have done just that. Ride safe and make sure your covered, Dominick 8
