2 Think Energy Efficiency Home heating and cooling During the hottest and coldest days, you want the most efficient heating and cooling system possible. Dakota Electric can help with rebates on a central air conditioner, an air-source or ground-source heat pump, as well as a tune-up for your central air conditioner or air-source heat pump. Additional savings are available for members who participate in Cycled Air Conditioning. Members considering electric heat should talk to an Energy Expert first to ensure maximum benefits. Energy Star appliances The products and appliances you install in your home have two price tags: the price you pay when you buy the product and the price you pay to operate it. When you think about saving money, think energy efficiency. By making easy, smart choices in your home, you can contribute to lower energy bills and help the environment. Your Dakota Electric Energy Expert is available to review our rebate programs and help you qualify for the maximum rebate amount. When you consider your next refrigerator or freezer purchase, you are encouraged to purchase an Energy Star qualified appliance. Dakota Electric offers a rebate for members who purchase an Energy Star qualified refrigerator or freezer, as long as the replaced unit is properly recycled. Members can also receive a rebate for purchasing an Energy Star dehumidifier. Appliance recycling Even if you re not purchasing a new Energy Star refrigerator or freezer, you could still receive a $75 rebate for properly recycling your existing one. Your recycling vendor must verify the appliance is in working order when accepted for recycling. Electric water heating Dakota Electric s water heating program offers rates that are competitive with other water heating systems. Storage heating is the least expensive electric water heating plan available, saving you hundreds of dollars each year over standard electric systems. For a reduced electric rate, we heat your water at night, storing all you need for normal daily use. Energy Star home lighting The home lighting program is designed to help residential members replace standard household incandescent lighting with high-efficient lighting technology such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), light emitting diode (LED) bulbs and holiday lights, and LED yard-light fixtures. NOTE: Because of the presence of mercury, CFLs must be recycled. In Minnesota, it is illegal to place them directly in the garbage. For recycling options, visit Pools, electric vehicle charging & solar Dakota Electric also offers rebates on energy-efficient pool pumps and heaters, electric vehicle charging installations and solar arrays. New home construction Contact the Energy Experts The new home construction program focuses on energy-efficient home design and construction. 6 HVAC Energy Star ductless air-source heat pump High-efficiency central air conditioner Cycled Air Conditioning Air-source heat pump (ASHP) Electric thermal storage (ETS) heater Energy Star ductless air-source heat pump So often we take heating and air conditioning for granted. When it s hot or cold outside, we simply step into our comfortable homes. However, when our heating or cooling system is not working that s a problem. If you are looking for a new HVAC system because yours is broken or needs an upgrade, Dakota Electric is here to help you make a smart decision that will get you the rebates you deserve! A ductless air-source heat pump system, also called a mini-split, is a good option for houses with non-ducted heating systems. They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible, and very efficient new homes that require only a small space-conditioning system. Be sure to choose an Energy Star compliant unit and hire an installer familiar with the product and its installation. A $300 rebate is available. Rebate form is on the next page. Air-source heat pump (ASHP) An ASHP operates like a central air conditioner in the summer, and in cool weather, heats your home by transferring heat energy from the outside air and bringing it indoors. When properly installed, an ASHP is percent efficient in heating mode. Up to $630 in rebates is available. And a low, off-peak electric rate makes having one even more affordable. Rebate application is available through a registered HVAC contractor.* Energy Star high-efficiency central air conditioner If you ve talked with an Energy Expert at Dakota Electric and have decided that an ASHP is not an option for you, then consider an Energy Star high-efficiency central air conditioner. A rebate of up to $330 is available for SEER 13 to 16+ units. You may also be interested to know that many people buy an air conditioner that is too large, so make sure your unit is properly sized. 8 What is a Ground Source Heat Pump System? A ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system is an electronically powered heating and air conditioning system that uses the earth s ability to store heat in the ground. The GSHP system operates based on the stability of underground temperatures, using available heat in the winter and putting heat back into the ground in the summer. A GSHP differs from a conventional furnace or boiler by its ability to transfer or pump heat, versus the standard method of producing heat. As energy costs continue to rise and emissions become a concern, GSHP systems may address both of these concerns. How does it work? Ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems promoted by Dakota Electric use a closed-loop of buried plastic tubing next to your home, a pump pack and a water-source heat pump. The purpose of the tubing, which can be installed either horizontally or vertically, is to transfer heat to and from the ground. The amount of plastic tubing needed depends on the size of the home being conditioned. Typically, one loop (400 to 600 feet) has the capacity of one ton or 12,000 British thermal units per hour (BTU/h). A GSHP for an average house will range from 3 to 5 tons. The second component is a pump pack, which sends the water through the tubing and through the water-source heat pump. Lastly, the water-source heat pump is the unit that replaces the existing furnace. This is where the heat from the tubing is transferred allowing for heating or cooling of your home. Ground-source heat pumps have the ability to capture heat at one temperature reservoir and transfer it to another temperature reservoir. In a closed loop system, a water and non-toxic antifreeze mixture circulates through the tubing transferring heat to and from the water-source heat pump. Because the earth s temperature remains at a relatively constant 50 degrees year-round, GSHP systems are 300 to 400 percent efficient, regardless of the outdoor air temperature. In addition, waste heat from the air conditioning cycle can be used to provide free water heating during the summer. Is a ground-source heat pump right for your home? A GSHP system can be installed in and accommodate a residential home of any size, anywhere, including both single- and multi-family units and new or retrofit applications. Most lot sizes can hold the buried plastic tubing under lawns, landscaped areas and driveways. Many homeowners choose to retrofit their home with a GSHP using the existing ductwork. Your dealer/installer will be able to determine ductwork requirements and if any minor modifications are needed. 10 ECM Rebate - Keep your home comfortable with less money Did you know that upgrading your furnace motor can help you save on your electric bill? While your furnace might use fuel to generate heat, it uses electricity to power the fans and motors that distribute air throughout your home during both the heating and cooling seasons. Dakota Electric wants to help you save money by helping you use less electricity to keep your home comfortable. How do you benefit? Electronically commutated motors (ECMs) help save energy and money by running at the best speed opposed to traditional motors that always run at top speed. Because your furnace fan distributes air in your home during both the heating and cooling season, an ECM helps save money throughout the year. Rebate available Dakota Electric residential members are eligible for a $100 rebate for ECMs installed in Dakota Electric s service territory. Rebates are available to members who purchase a new furnace with an ECM or upgrade to an ECM in an existing furnace. What you need to do 1. Check with Dakota Electric s Energy Experts to verify funding, program parameters and product qualification. 2. Complete the ECM rebate application on the next page. 12 Energy Star Appliances: Two price tags When buying an appliance, remember that it has two price tags: the price you pay to purchase it and what you pay for the energy it uses. Energy Star qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use percent less energy than standard models. The money you save on your utility bills can more than make up for the cost of a more expensive but more efficient Energy Star model. Did you know that the average home spends about $2,000 on energy bills every year? If you change to appliances that have earned the ENERGY STAR rating, you can save on energy costs while helping to protect the environment. Contact the Energy Experts Energy Star Appliances They generate savings two ways! First, new Energy Star appliances are more efficient to run. The energy savings achieved from the purchase converts to annual savings of dollars kept in your pocket. The older the appliance you are replacing, the quicker the new appliance will pay for itself. Second, Dakota Electric provides a rebate to members who purchase a qualified Energy Star appliance. Refrigerator and freezer rebates require recycling the replaced unit, because you won t be saving energy if you simply add an appliance to your home. Who can participate? A new appliance must be installed in Dakota Electric s service territory and members must verify the appliance is a qualified Energy Star product. A working-refrigerator or -freezer recycling-only rebate is also available. The appliance must be plugged in and in working order when the recycling vendor arrives to pick it up. Follow the steps below and we will credit your electric bill with the corresponding rebate. How do I apply? 1. Call Dakota Electric to verify funding is available. 2. Fill out the rebate form on the next page. 3. Attach the appropriate receipts to the rebate form and submit to Dakota Electric according to rules of the rebate program. 18 Miscellaneous Electric vehicle charging station Solar installation Energy Star new home construction Dakota Electric continues to find solutions that waste less energy, reduce monthly electric bills and help members save time. We now offer rebates for other special programs including electric vehicle charger installation, solar panel(s) installation and Energy Star new home construction. Electric vehicle charging station supports the growing electric vehicle (EV) market and wants to work with members who purchase an electric vehicle to make sure you get the most affordable rate to meet your charging needs. Recieve up to $500 for installing a Level 1 or Level 2 charging station for your plug-in electric vehicle. Rebate form is on page 19. Solar installation s solar performance program offers a rebate of $0.50 per watt for installed capacity, not to exceed $4,000. Under net metering, you receive the current month s retail rate for all excess energy delivered into the grid. Contact Dakota Electric for rebate information.
