4 Alumni Spotlight Esther Chung (2010) Harvard University Testimonials I have all kinds of friends now people from all over the world, from star athletes to math geniuses. -Felipe Perez Fairmont Preparatory Academy Alumnus Felipe Perez (2012) UCLA Since childhood, Fairmont Prep alumnus Felipe Perez has had one dream to play Major League baseball. He grew up around the sport, with many of his relatives playing pro ball in Mexico, and at age four Perez could not wait to pick up his own bat and hit the field. Over the years, Perez developed incredible pitching skills and began playing for traveling teams. His parents were supportive of his dream, and when it came time for high school they encouraged him to attend Fairmont Prep so he could balance his baseball achievements with a focus on strong academics. My first year at Fairmont Prep wasn t easy, said Perez. The teachers expectations were far beyond what I was used to, but my teachers never hesitated to take time out of their day to give me the help I needed. I will always be grateful for that. Coming from a public school in Long Beach, the small size and diversity at Fairmont Prep was also an adjustment for Perez. Four years later, he says the variety of people at Fairmont Prep is what he loves most about the school. I have all kinds of friends now people from all over the world, from star athletes to math geniuses. Perez joined the baseball team at Fairmont Prep his sophomore year, which was also the first year in the school s history that the baseball team was named undefeated League Champions and qualified for the CIF Championship. In 2010, Perez was one of 20 elite United States players to make USA Baseball s 16U National Team. In the championship game against Mexico, the coach asked Perez to pitch. With adrenaline pumping and a packed stadium, he helped lead the team to an 11-4 gold medal win. After this game, college scouts began wooing Perez. He explored opportunities with many of the top baseball schools in the west, and ultimately decided to accept a full scholarship offer from the University of California, Los Angeles. I value both athletics and academics, and I know UCLA will offer me the best of both worlds, said Perez. Inspired by his bilingual family and the global ethos at Fairmont Prep, he plans to study International Business and hopes to graduate in three years before entering the draft. I know it will be challenging, but I feel prepared thanks to the rigor of my course load at Fairmont Prep. My parents and Fairmont have always pushed me and believed in me. Keep an eye on Felipe Perez He s sailing towards his dream with as much speed and drive as his famous pitches. Class of 2010 Valedictorian. AP National Scholar. National Merit Scholarship Recipient. Anna Belan (9th Grade) Fairmont International Academy Russian student Anna Belan began studying at Fairmont International Academy in spring She is working to improve her English language skills and hone her musical performance talent with the hopes of one day studying opera at Chapman University in Orange County. Belan s brother is Russian pop star Dima Bilan. I am enjoying my time at Fairmont so far. I have made many American friends who are very open and kind. The administrators welcomed me and helped me better understand the United States school environment, said Belan. Her school schedule currently includes English, physical education, and social studies classes. Belan hopes to join the award-winning school choir next year and is also taking music theory classes during Fairmont Prep s complimentary after school program to learn how to read American music. Belan continues learning at home from the American host family she is living with in Orange County. The family spends a lot of time together and makes me feel included. They brought me along on a weekend trip to the beach, which was a lot of fun, she said. Overall, my experience at Fairmont has been great! I would definitely recommend this program to my friends who want to pursue an education in the United States.
